Stacy Lambert Painted Snake Face Candy Dish. 2016

NC Pottery is offering a very neat example of Stacy Lambert’s unique folk pottery. Please message for more details...

For about a year he created these candy dishes with double snakes and a face. Every surface is painted. The face is decorated vertically in portions of orange & blue, both ears hyperextended as attachments or hinges. The tongue of the face is similarly extended. These connections, along with the two ends of the snakes, wrap around a nearly hidden wooden dowel. Stacy caps the dowel ends with a ceramic & metal cap. Even the inside surfaces are touched by Stacy’s brush. On the orange side of the face, the ear area had a little knock to it, loosening it. This was strengthened/restored and the area functions as an attachment/hinge.

Dimensions 6.5x4.5x3.5”. Signed & dated 2016 by Stacy.

Today a friend joined NC Pottery for a little road trip down to see close friend & potter Bob Armfield. His Oakland Pottery for over 4 decades has been located in Ramseur, NC. Here Bob can be seen holding a face jug to which he has already added features. And then applying his circular Oakland Pottery stamp.

Finally Bob is pointing out the rebuild of his wood kiln. His neighbor is helping him do this. The design is based upon wood kiln set up very similar to a traditional groundhog kiln. The design originates from New Zealand. There is a side loading area to the right which will make it much easier for Bob to load/unload the kiln.

Later on we also briefly stopped to say hey to Billy Ray Hussey. Also a good time too!

WALTER FLEMING PERFECT SYMMETRY SWIRL FACE VASE

2021. Stands 9” x 6.5”. Walter Fleming (age 86.5), is truly thriving. This decade has led to some challenges, but he embraced/face/navigated through them. And during a recent visit he affirmed that life is good. One doesn’t question (listening, sharing and humor are all encouraged) the Senior Potter of the Catawba Valley :>. His swirl I have observed has improved over the past decade. And that is something he has also pointed out a few times. Plus he remains the only potter I know that turns as he was born, left-handed. Or backwards to almost every other active potter. Also, his glazes are always superior and are getting even more beautiful. This is not my imagination because I have pictures from earlier years for comparison.

Please message us for more details!

NC Pottery attended our first kiln opening in quite a while today. This was a special Sun opening with Transfigured earth studio (Ben) and Mike Ball sharing their wares. The pots were fired in a kiln built in conjunction with Mike. And many of the bricks in the kiln were a gift to Mike from retired potter Michel Bayne (whose shop used to be located nearby).

New collectors and old friends attended the soggy with a few bits of sun event. The rain definitely was a ok (until heading home much later). The trip was inspired by friends Miles & Thomas.

And several pots, from both Ben and Mike, jumped a ride back with NC Pottery!

RED A.V. SMITH BUGGY WHISTLER FACE JUG. Late 90’s. Stands 7” x 8”.

A while back NC Pottery obtained some wonderful A.V. Smith pots. These were purchased directly the fellow collector in the late 90's. We are big fans of buggy jugs & never seen another buggy whistler face jug in any glaze by A.V. The smart shiny red glaze is phenomenal and its obviously the earlier red employed by A.V.. It is what it is. Mint condition. Please ms about interest.

For those not familiar with potter A.V. Smith, he was active for about 40 years before retiring to embrace other interests last decade. He turned & fired his pots at his place in Sanford, NC. Prior to this he worked as a production potter and then teamed with friend Charles (Charlie) Lisk at Clenny Pottery. Then each of them when independent, A.V. stayed in Sanford, Charlie moved to the Catawba Valley.

CATAWBA INDIAN EARLIER 20TH CENTURY DOUBLE ‘CUPID’ HANDLE VASE

Stands 6" x 5".

This is a remarkable 1st or early 2nd quarter 20th century Catawba pot with a most unusual combination of form w/ handles that are almost exclusively found on what are these squatty jugs called ‘cupid jugs’. Or sometimes similarly on the larger ‘gypsy’ storage pots. Really great coil-formed & pit-fired pot created for the earlier tourist trade or maybe for household use for keepsakes. During this time (except for several specific potters that infrequently signed their works during the Depression) almost all Catawba Pottery would be unsigned.

REOLA HARRIS DOUBLE FIRED CATAWBA INDIAN POTTERY VASE MASTER POTTER

Stands 6.75" x 4". 1985.

Reola Harris (1921-1991), a Master Potter, I never personally knew, but her style was known widely being very unique amongst the Catawba. I would describe it as abstract. Possibly this was to let one use’s one imagination. She made all sorts of figurals, but then random other forms such as a basket with filled with removable eggs (formerly owned that style). In this vase Reola, per the former owner, did the most remarkable thing by double firing her pot. This was a technique that is rarely employed now, but a small portion of the lip (easily seen in the pictures), blew out in fire pit. And so, she repaired that lip section and refired the vase. The outcome is the most remarkable glaze finish I have ever seen on a Catawba pot. There are multiple areas that finish strikingly similar to wood and has this distinct shiny spotty pattern. Hence, one must say excellent condition.

KATE JOHNSTON SEAGROVE POTTERY SLIP DECORATED SUGAR BOWL NC POTTERY COLLECTORS GUILD

Stands 2.75" x 4". 2014. With NCPCG stamp.

Kate Johnston settled in the Seagrove area in 2010 to begin to embrace a great pottery tradition of NC wood-fired wares. She fires her kiln three times a year. Her passion is very large turned pots, but one must put some smaller pots in the holes. She taps three slips in her decoration. And this sugar bowl was commissioned as a limited edition set of pots made for the NC Pottery Collectors Guild in 2014. All aspects of Kate’s amazing craft is present in this lidded sugar bowl.

ROGER HICKS #1 COWBOY BUST 1995 POTTERY

Stands 11.5" x 9".

This is a majestic early pottery first Cowboy bust created by famed Catawba Valley potter Roger Hicks. His busts are his rarest forms, then figurals (e.g. bison), and then jugs. Roger, becoming blind as a teenager, picked up the pottery itch via his brother-in-law Glenn Bolick. Glenn was part of the multi-generational family of Owens pottery family of the Seagrove area. Roger has the moniker of the blind potter of the Catawba Valley, but that didn't impact his skills in making pots. A number of years back Roger retired from pottery due to health concerns. A simply amazing man to know and even meet. He is also a master guitar player.

CHARLES MOORE WHITE W/ CHINESE BLUE/RED ROOSTER & HEN POTTERY JUGTOWN

Taller of two birds, the rooster, 8" tall. Both stamped Jugtown & 1995.

Charles Moore (b1935-d2007), potter and all-around great support for Jugtown Pottery on & off for 4 decades, is most famous for his birds. In 1998 he did move across the street to be next to his brother Larry & open his own shop. This delectable pair of matching hen & rooster is fairly uncommon. And particularly the glazing. The primary underglaze appears to be the redder end of the Chinese Blue/Red glaze and then each figural was dipped into bottom up til the ‘shoulder’ area with white. And then the glazes mix together on the lower 2/3 of the figural for a phenomenal effect.

WALTER FLEMING RARE DOUBLE FACE JUG

Dimensions 8" x 6".

Walter Flemming, just turned 84 this month, remains the ‘Senior’ potter of the Catawba Valley, and he still is enjoying turning. In early 2021 he was hit by another driver when stopped and it was very scary. But he is doing ok and recovered with time. And when back to turning his pots because it is one of his passions that has kept him busy during COVID. Walter Flemming turned & fired this incredibly rare beautiful ash-glazed double face jug decorated w/ melted glass.

KIT VANDERWAL RARE SWIRL FACE JUG SEAGROVE

Stands 5” by 3.75".

For a number of years, Kit Vanderwal made pots part-time in the Seagrove, NC area. He was unfortunately murdered by a co-worker in a seeming act of random violence a number of years ago. And we mourned his loss. His production was never prolific, but he loved turning pots and creating smaller forms and figurals. This is nice example of a swirl face jug by Kit. And a reality that also a fairly outcome of what would happen to handles on his jugs during firing. Signed on the base back 'Vanderwal'.

STACY LAMBERT FIGHTING DINOS PAINTED TILE POTTERY

Dimensions 3.5" x 4".

Potter Stacy Lambert, Asheboro, NC, began working nearly 3 decades ago by helping out Seagrove potter Sid Luck. And Stacy loves to create pots on holidays, including as he did last Thanksgiving with this painted tile. No holiday is immune from him embracing it! I have seen him make tiles occasionally over the time I have known him, but they are definitely uncommon. Not sure which of the dinosaurs (a theme he loves) will win this fisticuff, but that is left to the imagination of others. In the picture from the side, I included it primarily to show 1 of 2 tiny holes that Stacy employs to let moisture escape from the tile (or it would fire crack very likely).

A.V. SMITH EARLIER MINI RED FACE JUG POTTERY

Stands 3.5" x 4".

This is great mini early red glaze example of the Sanford, NC, A.V. Smith's face jugs from circa 2000 or just post, per the collection from which it came. The face is just adorable and all A.V. As with his longtime friend Charlie Lisk, A.V. could turn some fantabulous minis. I am not knocking other Catawba Valley style potters, but they are among the best. The red glaze, including a green apple & yellow, he had to stop employing because they were banned due to lead content. Obviously, one doesn't eat from this, and later a red equivalent was discovered by the NC potters to basically match the old red. A.V. is now retired, endeavored now on another career path.

AV SMITH EARLY RED FACE STANDING RING JUG

Stands 12" x 8".

This is a wonderful example of the Sanford, NC, A.V. Smith's work from circa 2000 or latter 90’s, per the collection from which it came and in general based upon the style. The face is just perfect with the china teeth and A.V.’s turning is a great example of his symmetry. He lightly used some plate glass to create the melted orange on the inside top edges of the ring. The red glaze, including a green happy & yellow, he had to stop employing because they were banned due to lead content. Obviously, one doesn't eat from this, and later a red equivalent was discovered by the NC potters to basically match the old red. A.V. is now retired, endeavored now on another career path.

SALLY EDITH BROWN MINI EFFIGY TURTLE PIPE CATAWBA INDIAN POTTERY

Until a few years ago, I didn’t know Sally made pots. Her dad is one of the Master Potters, Keith Brown. He is fantastic and super friendly. And creates smaller but really fine pots. Keith's role really is to be one of main advocates for all the potters. He does everything he can to drag out some of potters to a show. He is one of the public faces of the Catawba potters and is beloved by the media, etc. His daughter I have confirmed occasionally creates these delicious small effigy figurals, sometimes as pipes. Normally involving one of their sacred animals.

The frog pipe is 2" x 3". Signed & dated 12-2005.

Currently on eBay.

Stacy Lambert Painted Wolf Poem Face Jug

Dimensions 7.5" x 7".

Just posted by NC Pottery to eBay is this delicious take by potter Stacy Lambert one of his long-embraced themes of the Red Riding Hood & the Wolf. In this poem face jug, the wolf is not very successful in seeking out his preferred munchy food, cookies. Instead the red-hooded wonder & her grandma turn the tables on the poor wolf. The horrors!
