At stop 15 you'll find just about everything you'll need!
The Coop is owned by 440 households who have ties to the Embudo Valley. We are starting our 20th year of business in the old store building that has been serving the region's inhabitants since the mid 1930s. The Coop sells a full line of groceries including organic and local produce, local crafts and books by local authors, specialty meats, and a deli offering sandwiches and specials. We host a bulk buying club to members and are the main meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Come and visit Dixon's front porch.

At stop 21, Metier, you'll find the work of its proprietor Ai Smith, weaver and long time tour member, here's what Ai has to say about her practice:

I've been making baskets (off-loom weaving) for over 50 years, and on-loom weaving for 36 years. 1990 was my first year as a Dixon Tour artist and I've participated every year since, save one. I enjoy that my materials are renewable, sustainable and environment-friendly. My handwoven garments are truly one-of-a-kind: I have a low boredom threshold and just can't bring myself to repeat a weave structure, design or pattern.

SpicerDigital has been operating in the Embudo area for nearly 15 years providing web design, print design and printing services. The owner/operator Jeff Spicer, spent his formative years in the pre-press realm in Dallas and San Francisco. The bulk of those years was spent in front of computer systems before Apple machines began to dominate the industry and printers were still using film to burn plates.

He digitally retouched photos for catalogs, in-flight magazines and the fashion industry. Finally calling it quits in 2000 he visited friends in Dixon, and has called the area home ever since. When he has a bit of spare time he creates fantastic digital compositions, travel posters and cut paper experiments.

We give a special welcome to Jeff as he joins the tour this year after so many years of graphic design support. Be sure and visit his studio in Rinconada just behind Embudo Valley Vineyards.

In memoriam of writer and farmer Stanley Crawford, his son and daughter welcome folks to the garlic farm to say hello, purchase books and farm memorabilia. Stanley Crawford and his wife RoseMary Crawford were one of the original founders of the Dixon Studio Tour. Stan is most known for his books Mayordomo, A Garlic Testament: Seasons on a Small New Mexico Farm and A River in Winter, all inspired by the land, water, and community of Dixon where he and his family built their home and lived off the land for fifty-three years.

The Tour kicks off tomorrow! Take a look at dixonarts.org for more information, to plan your route, and download a map! We can't wait to share our works with you.

Be sure to check into Faith Gelvin's studio in El Bosque at stop #6. Fun and functional everyone will be sure to find something! Here's what Faith would like to say about her work:
The Dixon Studio Tour is an annual family tradition. that began with my mom Nausika, who started it all with a group of artist friends in 1982. I grew up in her ceramic studio, making pottery and sculptures by her side which set me on the path for my artistic career. I went on to earn a MFA at the University of Minnesota where I studied mixed media sculpture and metal casting. While my mother is no longer with us, I now occupy her studio and continue to produce colorful ceramic pieces in addition to mixed media sculptures that reflect my deep connection to the beautiful property I was born and raised on.

Be sure to visit DST favorite Betsy Williams at stop #43!
Known for her tiny plates and beautiful ash glazed pottery, Betsy has been hard at work continuing her research into our local clays while designing and rebuilding her large wood fired kiln.
Here's what Betsy has to say about her practice:

Individual pieces, modest in scale, are at the heart of my work. I concentrate on unobtrusively conveying a sense of quiet attention and mystery. To my mind, a good pot is simultaneously understated and forthright, seems somehow both brand new and archaic, and makes itself useful practically and spiritually. My tiny plates grace the countertops and tables of households worldwide.
I am currently engaged in researching local New Mexico clays and glaze materials.

In exciting tour news Jim Vogel will be showing locally this year at stop #36. Jim has indicated new and small works will be available and describes his process, "I paint to tell stories of New Mexico, the stories told to me by my Grandfather, my Mother, and my friends and neighbors, as well as the land itself. I believe these stories, when recreated properly, transcend our region and become universal." Much of Jim's studio work is completed in collaboration with his wife Christen, who is also an artist. Jim says, "...we collaborate on framing my paintings using her creative salvage art talents."

Visit our website for information on the tour and all artists, dixonarts.org
