Dixon Studio Tour artist, Ellen Schechner-Johnson, has a new limited edition artist book, Paper Bridge, with Brighton Press.
Ellen writes about this project, "I was reading about the uses of paper in various spiritual practices, and I saw the words “the paper bridge.” For many years I researched this image.
It led me to a book called Paper Bridges, a book of Yiddish poetry by Kadya Molodowsky. She wrote about her memories of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, which she left in 1935, and her transition to life in New York City, where she was deeply involved in the Yiddish literary society of that time.
This literary group used the image of the paper bridge to keep connection to the culture of their past that they had had to leave in Europe before and during World War II, preserved by stories, captured on paper—the life of a disappearing culture....Paper and language became a direction for my work on a series of painted and collaged books—books about lostness, about searching for home."

Paper Bridge, poems by Kadya Molodowsky and hand painted prints and collages by Ellen Schechner-Johnson, edition of 30, Brighton Press, 2023.

A multimedia artist primarily sculpting in marble, Brian Barreto ( on Instagram) pursues the human form as a locus between identity, gender, and the inimitable joy of belonging. A parallel practice of abstraction is founded upon listening — investigating the musicality of repetition and multiplicity in open edition works. Current series explore transformational bodyscapes, migration, reliquary, longform engagements, and cultural fragmentation.

Find Brian at stop #31 this year. Be sure and check out his website (through link in our bio dixonarts.org), follow him and stay tuned for events and workshops at the collaborative gallery space Alluvial in 2024.

Marilyn Reinbolt-Price has lived in an apple orchard by the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico since the mid ‘80s. She lives with her husband, with dogs and cats, and numerous farm animals. Much of her artwork is about the expanses of land and sky, the incredible beauty of the Rio Grande and other rivers and streams of this Land of Enchantment, as well as rural, traditional places such as farms and backroads.

Long time member of the Dixon Studio Tour you can also view her work year round at the Ammann Gallery in Taos, NM.

Marilyn says, "I go to nature to make a meditative connection with the world. While painting I live in that moment in time, where you focus only on the world outside."

Learn more about her work and process by visiting dixonarts.org and be sure to see her inspiring home in person at stop #36 this year.

Lee Akins was born in Texas but grew up in Taiwan. You can observe the influence of his time in Asia in his coil built terracotta. Lee currently teaches part-time at  UNM-Taos and Taos Ceramic Center and has taught ceramics at the college level for over 40 years. He received his B.F.A. from the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio 1975 and M.F.A. from Southern Methodist University 1986. His work has been featured in ceramic magazines and publications. Visit Lee Akins at stop #35 this year and see his beautiful work for yourself.

Be sure and preview our artists at dixonarts.org, many have their own websites (like Lee!) and social media and etsy sites. There is something for everyone at the DIxon Studio Tour.

Sylvia Ernestina Vergara is at Stop #7
In case you missed this lovingly worded excerpt about Albuquerque native and long-time Dixeña, Sylvia, let me emphasize it here one more time. Sylvia, “has been on the tour for many years, often as La Carreta. Sylvia studied music at Mills College and has been writing poetry and operatic works in Spanish and English. A good sampling can be found at the Dixon library and her website.

She's also an accomplished photographer who prefers real film on a roll.

Tying all these threads together is a deep connection to the land, [and might I add querencia]. Sylvia farms a beautiful stretch in Montecito, small terraced gardens where she grows foods and ingredients for her remedios. Go visit a magical place!”

I concur! Go visit Sylvia, a magical person, a magical place this DST, Nov. 4th and 5th!

Sylvia’s website: https://sylviaernestinavergara.com/

This piece is entitled:
The Kaleidoscope String Quartet Sonata

What is querencia? more on that here: https://news.unm.edu/news/unm-authors-explore-concept-of-querencia-in-new-book

Better yet, if you stop by her spot and speak to the artist herself, you may get to chance to ask her about querencia!

Be sure to view the light and glass installations of Robin Stanway at stop #34. Robin says, "In my work, my goal is to reiterate and frame these light events within an art context. My work presents, amplifies, and contains subtle, natural events which would otherwise be lost in our busy lives. Using light as a direct metaphor for the spiritual presence, I create sculptural installations which immerse the viewer in a contemplative experience. This work is my response to our cluttered world."

If you want to plan your tour or preview the work of our artists be sure and visit dixonarts.org. You can find links to our artists, including Robin, community history, interviews and more!

A maker of utilitarian art, she uses well made natural fibers and also repairs and upcycles whenever possible in her low waste studio. You never know what treasure you will find in this small batch printshop!

You can check out her tea towel empire at stop 31 this year, follow her at , and find her etsy link through the link in our bio.

Many tour attendees are very familiar with the lovely tiny plates of Betsy Williams, clay worker and co-owner of the in Rinconada. Of her work she says, "Individual pieces, modest in scale, are at the heart of my work. I concentrate on unobtrusively conveying a sense of quiet attention and mystery. To my mind, the best pots are both understated and forthright, and can seem both brand new and archaic at the same time. They make themselves useful, practically and spiritually."
Be sure to follow Betsy on Instagram and .

Find Ellen Schechner-Johnson at Stop #8.

Many of you may know her for her hand-painted multimedia etchings, collages, and works in paper and clay. But did you know that within all those layers something far more magical is revealing and concealing a deeper meaning?

Ellen draws from historical references that combine the notations of pre-alphabetic languages and the surfaces of frescoes. Her work is an exploration of time, of finding fragments, of loss and of retrieval.

If that piques your interest and gets those wheels turning, then make sure you make Ellen at #8 one of your stops at this year’s Dixon Studio Tour, Nov. 4th and 5th.
