Giant Steps

John Coltrane's Atlantic Records album Giant Steps was released this month in 1960. It introduced one of the music world's most challenging set of chord progressions, the "Coltrane Changes". This short film by art student Michael Levy helps you visualize the angular, modern sound.

Thelonious Monk - Blue Note Records

Happy Birthday Thelonius Monk, born this day in 1917. Writer Louis Porter said about John Coltrane's relationship with Monk in a 2018 interview on New Orleans Public Radio: "[they] could talk music for hours and hours,” and Coltrane was the kind of musician who liked to talk music, he liked to sit and talk music. Miles was very impatient with that, he would say, “Come on man, why do you have to talk about that?” But Monk, that’s all he liked to do was sit at the piano, and Coltrane really loved Monk, I think he loved being with him."

The most important jazz musicians are the ones who are successful in creating their own original world of music with its own rules, logic, and surprises. Thelonious Monk, who was criticized by observers who failed to listen to his music on its own terms, suffered through a decade of neglect before h...

Elvin Jones Tribute

Happy birthday to the first great post-bebop drummer, the explosively talented, award-winning percussionist Elvin Jones. From the New York Times: ''My experience with Coltrane,'' he told the writer James Isaacs in 1973, ''was that John was a catalyst in my finding the way that drums could be played most musically.'' He in turn influenced Coltrane, Mr. Jones's ferocious rhythms goading Coltrane to ecstatic heights in performance and on recordings like ''A Love Supreme'' and ''Ascension.''
Their partnership was pure magic.

Sonny Rollins

Happy Birthday to the brilliant and innovative saxophonist Sonny Rollins, still "Holding The Stage!" We note your recollections about John Coltrane in Mojo Magazine: “He was like a preacher in a way. Coltrane didn’t waste time. He didn’t do things frivolously. Everything he did was important. Whenever we got together, it was always a communion, talking about things that mattered. There was no jive. It was always meaningful. It was a great boon to me, to get a level of closeness with him.”

The John and Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, New York

In October 2006, the Coltrane Family, the Friends of the Coltrane Home Working Committee, and several additional invitees important to the Coltrane legacy participated in a Visioning workshop. This event, coupled with additional follow-up discussions with Ravi Coltrane and others has provided the basis for the Vision and Mission that follow. Subsequent vision and planning meetings have expanded the educational component – called the Coltrane Legacy Education Project.

THE VISION

The Friends of the Coltrane Home will work to fulfill John and Alice Coltranes’ vision of goodwill and connection through the sharing of the common language of music, and

  • Create an inspirational museum and archives celebrating the Coltranes’ music and influences, and the music legacy they were and remain a part of;
