Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane - Someday My Prince Will Come

https://youtu.be/hmsNIAKp2oU
Here is one for Prince on his birthday. He was 3 years old when this recording came out in 1961 featuring Miles Davis, Hank Mobley - Blue Note Records, Wynton KELLY, Paul Chambers, and the great Jimmy Cobb who died this May.
This clip is Miles leading into a memorable Coltrane solo. Please listen to the rest of this album as well as any and all of the amazing music Prince left the world. There is a line of black excellence and creativity running from Miles to Prince and beyond. We are lucky enough to be able to hear it.

Ornette Coleman - Song For Che

https://youtu.be/d1Jyt8Cx5ls
Here is another example of iconic musicians creating meaning and asking for change with their art. Ornette Coleman - Blue Note Records's album "Crisis" was recorded at NYU in 1969 - a time when the country had endured two assassinations as well as merited upheaval for civil rights and against Vietnam.
This clip is from a Charlie Haden composition titled "Song for Che". As always we encourage you to listen to the album which opens with a beautiful Ornette composition "Broken Shadows". Compositions like these endure both for their profound themes and for the great pleasure which comes from listening. The wonderful saxophonist Tim Berne has a recent beautiful project called "Broken Shadows" and we encourage you to check out that music too. The spirit of these amazing musicians and the change they wanted to bring to the world lives on.

Please listen to the divine Betty Carter leading an all star quartet featuring the luminous Geri Allen as well as Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland through an incredible, joyous version of John Coltrane's Giant Steps. Today, as we honor the memory of Breonna Taylor on her birthday, experiencing the artistry at its highest level of Betty Carter and Geri Allen seems fitting.

When we originally conceived this piece, we wanted to look at the ways in which home can serve as a creative space during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it also gives us a chance to highlight the incredible genius of John and Alice Coltrane, whose music changed the world. JOHN COLTRANE Alabama

https://youtu.be/saN1BwlxJxA
Written in response to the odious murder of black children in Birmingham, "Alabama" is acknowledged as one of the most potent of Coltrane's many compositions. Art is a reference point for our humanity and it can be a guide- a demand for us to be human together. The impetus of every American must be for profound, institutional change to begin today. "Alabama" was written in 1963. We cannot wait one more day.

The Coltrane Homes Response to COVID-19 School Closures

Today is the perfect day to give whatever you can. The food bank lines on Long Island continue to grow.

Long Islanders need our help - DONATE GOODS TODAY!
The John and Alice Coltrane Home is working with Long Island Cares to respond to the crisis our world is facing.

The need for food donations increases with each day. Many families who have never had to use a food pantry are turning to them for the first time, and the food banks are in great need to respond to the impact of COVID-19 effectively.

We are launching this food drive to help keep our regional food bank stocked for Long Islanders, where John and Alice Coltrane made their home and raised a family. Every donation makes an impact far greater than you can imagine.

We need YOUR help to make sure our trucks are stocked. Please consider a donation to honor the Coltrane legacy.

Happy to share this great effort from our friends at The D'Addario Foundation!

D’Addario’s engineering team has found a way to transform Evans G2 drumheads into protective face shields for medical workers battling the coronavirus pandemic. The goal is to be in production by April 27th and to quickly ramp up to a capacity of 100,000 face shields per week.

We plan to manufacture these shields as long as they’re needed in NY or anywhere around the globe. We’ve watched the incredible efforts of our healthcare and essential services workers all across the world with great admiration. While we cannot match the immeasurable efforts of these selfless heroes, we feel an immense responsibility to do our part in overcoming this crisis.

We called this Project Excelsior after the New York State Motto, which means “Ever Upward” because it captured the extraordinary determination and can-do spirit of our small team of engineers and product designers. It also typifies our music company’s current credo during the crisis: #WeWillPlayOn.

Ravi Shankar at Monterey Pop

Ravi Shankar was born 100 years ago on this day. Celebrated throughout the world for his profound contributions to music, we pay our deepest respect to this master artist. Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane met in 1964 with mutual admiration and respect and a shared desire for expansion in thinking, creating and expression. They left their last meeting in 1967 in the hopes of coming together again in the following months but John Coltrane died in July of that year. Please see this article for Ravi Shankar's reflections on Coltrane and explore the entire ravishankar.org site to learn more about this beautiful artist. http://www.ravishankar.org/reflections/reminiscences-about-john-coltrane-2001

These are difficult times and another great loss has come in the death of trumpeter Wallace Roney. Wallace Roney was a fiery soloist, a thoughtful composer and conceptualist and an important link in the musical chain. He was a bridge between the era of Miles and younger musicians coming up including Ravi Coltrane who had a close musical association with Wallace Roney, his brother the saxophonist Antoine Roney and the radiant pianist Geri Allen- also taken much too soon. Please listen to the many beautiful recordings Wallace Roney put out into the world as we mourn this loss. #wallaceroney #antoineroney #geriallen #ravicoltrane #coltrane #coltranelegacy #coltranehome

Each March we celebrate women's history. Here is a photo of two of our favorite musicians working today, harpist Brandee Younger and sax player Lakecia Benjamin, at The National Treasure Award at Jazz at Lincoln Center. They were speaking on the profound musical legacy of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. Now it is their turn and we applaud their accomplishments and are so thankful for their generosity in supporting The John and Alice Coltrane Home. Brandee Younger appears on many recordings including her own beautiful "Soul Awakening" and "Wax and Wane" and has upcoming shows in March at the National Arts Club on the 23rd and The Miller Theater on the 31st. Lakecia Benjamin has a new recording of both John and Alice Coltrane material "Pursuance" coming out at the end of March. Support these two amazing musicians during Women's History month and every month!
