Less than a week to go!

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Americans volunteered by the millions to aid the war effort. Camp Lee, a garrison built in 1917, reopened as a center for Selective Service draftees and was expanded to host operations for the Quartermaster and Medical Corps. Civilians contributed by joining militias and providing supplies for British and American forces. They grew victory gardens, kept vigilant as airplane spotters, and acted as supervisors during blackouts. Food, gasoline, and clothing materials were tightly rationed as citizens made sacrifices for the good of the nation. Jubilation erupted several times in 1945 as Victory in Europe, then over Japan, was announced, followed by the return of the city’s soldiers.

Visit the park this Saturday and Sunday to experience our WWII Weekend: America on the Offensive. All exhibits and activities are included with regular daily paid admission.

The US Navy's role in WWII is well known. From the carrier battles of the Pacific, U-Boat hunting in the Atlantic, and Amphibious operations in all theaters, the US Navy was a key contributor to Victory.

What's less known is the key role US Navy Construction Battalions played during the war. From building airfields, to docks, and other key infrastructure, the US Navy CBs embodied their motto of "we build, we fight."

If you're interested in hearing more about the CB story, come by August 22-23, to Pamplin Historical Park, in Dinwiddie County Virginia, and chat with the Living Historians from 36th US Naval Construction Battalion

When we think about the storming of Fortress Europe, most people think it began in Normandy with the 101st Airborne at the tip of the spear. While that's a key point, the ground work was laid in 1943.

Allied Operations to land in Sicily and Italy formed the back bone of lessons that were used to make Operation Overlord the success that it was. For these operations, elements of the 82nd Airborne provided the American parachute force.

It is said, an Army moves on its stomach, and one of the things that you’ll get to see up close at Pamplin Park’s WWII weekend, is period foodways. Our reenactors prepare their meals for the weekend using period recipes, ingredients, and equipment. It allows them to demonstrate how food was prepared 85 years ago, and gives them an opportunity to experience using those techniques to gain a better understanding of the past.

In war, knowledge is sometimes more powerful than weapons, men, and materials. In the campaigns in the Solomon Islands, coast watchers, Australian, New Zealand, and indigenous peoples, cast a wide web of eyes on Japanese movements in the archipelago. These movements were duly radioed to Allied Headquarters in order to keep them apprised of enemy intentions.

Come join us, as our Coast Watchers will be on hand to tell you more about this story on August 22-23, at Pamplin Historical Park in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.
