In 1882, the citizens of Becker County recognized the importance of recording the settling of their community. This group, comprised of many of our founding residents, actively worked to preserve the history of their community as it was happening. In 1924, this organization was renamed the Becker County Historical Society which started the Becker County Museum in 1943. Today the Becker County Museum boasts a facility of continuous learning through the areas of history, science and children.

20 years! Happy Anniversary Minnesota Digital Library!

✨Founding Contributor Highlight✨ From Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, in the northwestern part of the state, the Becker County Historical Society serves the public with a museum, archive collection, cultural demonstrations, and K-12 workshops. Their holdings include artifacts dating back to the glacial period of the county, a newspaper microfilm archive, photography collection, and an index of courthouse records. Becker County Historical Society's contribution to the Minnesota Digital Library includes photographs of the lumber industry, local businesses, resorts, and cabins, as well as portraits of early settlers.

The Becker County Historical Society was one of MDL’s 51 founding contributors in 2005. To celebrate our 20th anniversary, we will highlight each of these organizations throughout the year. We are deeply saddened by the passing of board member Dick Hecock. Dick spent countless hours researching our region and always the educator, sharing his findings with many entities. A steady voice, supporter and possibly the best note taker we ever been blessed to have, the Becker County Historical Society and Museum will miss him greatly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Georgia and his family.

View Richard Douglas Hecock's obituary, send flowers, find service dates, and sign the guestbook.
