"Earthly Flower" — Alexandra Nechita

Worth knowing what you are looking at: a lithograph is printed from a drawn stone or plate, which is why the line here still reads as drawn rather than reproduced. You can see it in the soft, graphite-like edges around the figure and in the way the pale ground shows through — closer to the artist's hand than a photographic reproduction gets you.

This is a piece that changes the room it is in. The palette runs almost entirely cool — blues, blacks, a hard green floor — with the mist cutting horizontally through the trunks. Hang it on a dark or saturated wall rather than white; the composition already supplies its own light and does not need the wall to do it.
