Old Church Pottery Show The Art School at Old Church Pottery Invitational
(13)

The Pottery Show at The Art School At Old Church was born out of a powerful friendship between the school’s founder, Mikhail Zakin, and her dear friend Karen Karnes. Karnes was originally the late Mikhail Zakin's pottery teacher and is now a renowned and internationally exhibited ceramic artist. Since its inception, Karnes has curated this invitational as a gift not only to her friend but also to the community of potters who gather each year as family in support of the Art School and each other. The show is now curated by Karen Karnes and co-curators Chris Gustin and Bruce Dehnert.

Good morning! My name is Candice Methe and I’ll be taking over the @theartschoolnj IG feed today to talk about my work and my process. I will be teaching a virtual workshop on Saturday, May 30th from 1-3 through The Art School at Old Church. I’m really excited!

I would consider it a two for one workshop because I’ll be showing you how I build one of my pedestal bowls with a design cut in and I’ll also be discussing the basics of terra sigillata, applications and show you a quick, fun and easy way to make it at home! There’s some room left in the workshop - $40 - for two riveting and educational hours. ⬇️

The Art School at Old Church is near and dear to my heart! I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Old Church Pottery Show for the past three years and I have had the best time making new friends, meeting up with old ones for some quality time and whiskey, and of course, fondling all the gorgeous pottery! eating yummy Korean food and Gail and Michael! I could go on and on but I’ll be posting all day..... here is a beauty that was @oldchurchpotteryshow last year and was scooped up to go live with @mudlilydesigns.

The Art School at Old Church

We are taking this special day, #GivingTuesdayNow, as an opportunity to kick off an ambitious 10-day, $10,000 campaign for The Art School at Old Church. #GivingTuesdayNow was started by the same folks who created #GivingTuesday, which happens each year during the holiday season. Here’s their message behind it. We couldn’t say it better ourselves:

“We believe that generosity has the power to unite and heal communities in good times and bad. A global threat like COVID-19 touches every person on the planet, and it presents an opportunity to come together as a global community.

“#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec 1, 2020 #GivingTuesday – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

“Let’s come together to create a wave of generosity, citizen engagement, action from business and philanthropy, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.”

To make a tax-deductible donation to The Art School at Old Church and help us keep inspiring through the joy of art once we get on the other side of COVID-19, please visit tasoc.org/support.

Thanks for tuning into Peter's #takeover yesterday! 🌈 In his own words, "Over the last few years, my studio practice and teaching have become tightly connected through this belief; precedents built our global communities in ways that transcend time and place.

In these unprecedented (to us!) times, however, the old mantra must become nearly everything has been done before.

By dismantling the daily practices we knew and reconstructing them digitally over three weeks’ time, it’s become clear that not everything has been done before. Everyone is forced to reconsider the way they live, function, and think. I’m optimistic that this will effect positive long-term changes."

We hope you'll join us THIS WEEKEND for an #unprecedented opportunity to recreate the studio experience online through our #virtualclassroom

Live-action lecture #3 is all about teaching and learning plaster. As an educator, I've spent years struggling to find great ways to connect students to mold-making theory. This year, I tried a new approach, and found success!

I'll share with you what I have been working on, and what I've learned. I call this one "A few rules for any aspiring mold maker."

Drawing upon history, literally and figuratively, is a huge part of the potter's job. In lecture #2, we'll look to one of the great potter's of the world - Wedgwood - to understand how drawing from history can develop greater understanding.

I'll discuss how these shapes evolved from studying Wedgwood studying history. We'll work on drawing, and you'll learn a new way to make handles, as pictured here.

Live-action lecture #1 will be an in-depth, comprehensive look at our home studio. I'll discuss how our studio was designed and constructed within, and around, our home. Layout, tools, ventilation and studio safety considerations will be addressed. I'll additionally provide a list of links and information on some of my favorite studio tools and machinery.

Pictured here:
1) blueprints for construction.
2) Laurie working in finished space.
3) Evelyn in plaster room, dressed appropriately.

Today I plan to show a few images and say a few words in support of my upcoming live - action lecture series for @theartschoolnj

What is a live-action lecture? Great question! It is a simultaneous PowerPoint presentation and series of live mini demonstrations with real-time q+a from the audience.

Each of four lectures, designed around a common theme, is about one hour. This weekend's theme - the word "precedent" - is about understanding history and applying it to your art-making practice.

As Marilyn Dale pulls out vintage pieces to test out new glaze, she reflects on our own history as inspiration and guidance through her teachings from Mikhail Zakin of Mikhail Zakin Gallery.

"She taught me to look to the past in order to inform the future. I thought that a was global view... but...as I clear out old pots and use them to test new glazes and see and touch where my path has led me , that I still want to do what she told me to do so many years ago. More clay! Massive energy! Tell a story! I think I'm finally understanding what she taught."

THE WAY OF CLAY:
When you step past the plastic-curtained doorway and stand under the weekend’s temporary awnings, patiently in queue, you will feel it. The energy in just the first few minutes of the opening night of the December 2019 show was testament to the anticipation that surrounds this annual exhibition. Potters from as west as Washington state, as north as Calgary in Canada, and as south as North Carolina, this time, had gathered for the 45th consecutive Annual Pottery Show at Old Church, which unveiled close to 3,000 handmade pieces ready to be touched, ogled over, and sold. There is a warmth, openness, and trust about these seasoned ceramicists who travel all this way in order to present their treasures. Yes, they, themselves, are onsite to walk you through each-and-every one of their handmade pieces, if you are curious to know more about them. #pottery #ceramics #clay
