The Glass Academy is a working modern glass studio situated in a tiny industrial enclave in Dearborn. It’s here that co-creators, founders and master glass artists Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin share the love of glass art and traditional glass blowing methods with the community in an onsite gallery, and through hands-on experiences and demonstrations.
Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin opened their Dearborn studio to the public in 2004. That’s when the Glass Academy served as an artist workshop, and state-accredited training site; Plucinsky and Nordin developed curriculum for skilled tradespersons, and hobbyists wishing to learn a variety of glass fabrication techniques and methods.
Today, Glass Academy has evolved to breathe life into glass with its design studio, expansive gallery and event space. Whether you want to own or share a handcrafted glass object – or get first-hand experience with glassblowing – this is where to find the skilled artisans that will share the love of the process with you.
Most days, the academy’s hot shop team manufactures original glass products to sell in the gallery. Business awards, custom light fixture shades, donor gifts, and other commissioned works round out the shop’s production schedule. On most evenings and weekends, this same team of skilled artisans leads hands-on workshops and experiences; the gallery space also plays host to a variety of private events.
As the seasons change, so does the Glass Academy. The facility is renowned for continuously refreshing its products line and eclectic gallery; it also offers a roster of seasonally inspired hands-on experiences.
Through these workshops, participants collaborate with glass artisans to design and craft items like custom beer mugs, wine glasses, water tumblers, wine bottle stoppers, glass icicles, and other unique decorative items for the home and garden. Plucinsky shapes the content of the academy’s classes and workshops to match the themed gallery. “I like the joy of bringing beautiful things into people’s lives, though the items we make and the simplified version customers can make,” says Michelle. “The best part of what we do is teaching people how to engage with glass art on a variety of ways.”
Participants don’t need any experience or artistic ability to try glassblowing. “We encourage everyone to take part, it’s our way of sharing the love of the process in a fun atmosphere that everyone can enjoy,” says Chris.
The expansive gallery shop is a destination stop for visitors and tourists to the city. Family-friendly experiences and special events throughout the year include:
