Every One Counts Holocaust Memorial Project

Every One Counts Holocaust Memorial Project This is a Girl Scout Gold Award project by Rebecca F. The goal is to collect 6 million pull-tabs to remember the Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust.

Every One Counts is a Girl Scout Gold Award project by high school student Rebecca F. of central Texas: My goal is to collect six million aluminum can pull-tabs (such as the ones on soda cans) to represent the six million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust and to educate the public about the Holocaust and genocide. When discrimination and bigotry are ignored, the repercussions are unconscionable.

We all know that six million Jewish people were killed, but it is easy to underestimate just how large a number that is. I would like to collect tabs so that you and I can visualize just how expansive is the death of six million people. When we can fully appreciate the potent devastation caused by this particular genocide, we can identify the the warning signs of genocides today and ultimately save lives in the future. In addition to collecting tabs, I will be leading education and counting workshops in the central Texas area. Participants will learn about the Holocaust and genocide, take part in activities to learn about discrimination, and count tabs. If you are interested in participating in or hosting a workshop, please contact me. I will be conducting workshops in classrooms, places of worship, businesses, and with other groups. The workshops are generally intended for high school students and adults as the material may not be appropriate for young people. However, if a younger group is interested, we can discuss ways for them to participate. Once six million tabs are collected, it is my intention that they be housed permanently in a museum or university where they can educate and inspire the public to take action against all forms of intolerance. Please join me in honoring victims of the Holocaust and other genocides by collecting tabs. Every life lost is precious so Every One Counts. How to participate:

Individuals and groups, such as school classes, can collect tabs from beverages they drink, by placing a collection bin in schools, places of worship, businesses or homes, by picking tabs up on the sidewalk and by collecting from friends. Please encourage others to participate as well. This is a great opportunity to educate yourself, your children or your students about the Holocaust and genocide. If you are interested in learning more about the Holocaust and other genocides please visit:

Where to send tabs to be included in the project:

Every One Counts
Caldwell Girl Scout House
505 W. Fox Street
Caldwell, TX 77836

If you live locally, you may also leave tabs at the front door. Since all tabs must eventually be counted to be included in my goal of six million, sending counted tabs with an included total in numerals (not tally marks) is best. However, if you send uncounted tabs, that is completely acceptable, but please include a slip of paper stating they are uncounted. It it is easiest to package tabs in Ziploc baggies. Dear Friends,

After the successful completion of my Gold Award project, Every One Counts, I was officially awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award at the Texas State Capitol earlier this month.

I would like to sincerely thank each person who helped me reach my goal of collecting one million tabs to represent a portion of the six million Jewish people who were murdered in the Holocaust. Without your help my project would never have been completed or accomplished the educational goals that it did. Thank you!

Please continue to educate yourself and others about the Holocaust and all genocides. At a time when antisemitic acts are becoming more frequent, in America and around the world, promoting empathy and tolerance towards all has never been more important. Please remember to have a "no tolerance for intolerance" attitude!

Again, I cannot express my gratitude for all that you have done to make my project thrive. Thank you!

The Every One Counts Holocaust Memorial Project has officially come to a successful close.

How many is six million?

From early 2017 to late 2018, I set out to answer that question for my Girl Scout Gold Award project. My goal was to collect six million pull-tabs to represent the six million Jewish people who were murdered in the Holocaust and to teach others that "every one counts." Together, my community and I successfully collected over one million tabs, remembered lives, and empowered ourselves to live compassionately. People from my home in central Texas to as far away as Alaska and Denmark joined in the effort of remembering lives by sending tabs and learning about the Holocaust. In an effort to educate the public about genocide and the importance of empathy, I led interactive Holocaust education workshops and presentations in schools, places of worship, businesses, and the like. At the conclusion of my project, the tabs were recycled and the money was used to purchase over 60 books on the Holocaust and a documentary book about my project for schools, places of worship, and Holocaust museums around the country. Before the tabs were recycled, I created a temporary exhibit of the tabs which was photographed to ensure that many people would understand how many one million is by viewing a powerful visual.

I would like to thank the hundreds of people that became involved from all over the world. We united in remembering lives and educating minds. Your support will forever be a cherished blessing.

It is my sincerest hope that after being a part of this project, you will have a better understanding of just how many six million is and be inspired to take action against all forms of intolerance. Together, let us remember the six million lives that were lost and prevent such an atrocity from ever happening again.

Never forget.

Rebecca F.

The final part of the Every One Counts project was to donate a book I created that documents the project and teaches readers about the number of Jewish lives taken using pictures. Copies of the Every One Counts project book were donated to schools, places of worship, scout troops, and Holocaust museums all over the United States. The project also donated over 60 books on the Holocaust and other genocides to Harmony Science Academy in Bryan, TX, Allen Academy in Bryan, TX, and Holocaust Museum Houston. I would like to thank all participants for making this possible!

One million lives were remembered by the Every One Counts project thanks to the great community of upstanders who took part. These tabs symbolize a million lives lost in the Holocaust. Take a look to see how devastating the toll of hate can be.

I would like to thank KATLO Photography in Bryan/College Station, TX for donating these wonderful pictures!

What does one million look like? Now you can see!

Today I temporarily displayed one million tabs with the help of my Girl Scout troop and other volunteers. Take a look at these photographs to see what one million looks like and remember a part of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. More pictures are coming soon!

Thank you to all who helped today by moving materials, taking pictures, and setting up the display.
