For Love and Art: Sharing with Seniors

For Love and Art: Sharing with Seniors For Love & Art stimulates art appreciation, while empowering caregivers to love people in creative and transformative ways. We showcase and discuss masterpieces from our partner museums to delight, astonish, intrigue, and comfort seniors and hospice.
For Love & Art is a 501(c)3 project whose mission is to bring the Art Experience to people with limited mobility. Partnered with the world's greatest museums, our donor's endow "Virtual Museum ArtBooks" to eligible healthcare facilities and empower caregivers to use the art therapeutically. Our organizational volunteers visit senior communities for group presentations of museum collections and spark lively conversation. All donations are 100% tax deductible.

For Love and Art Project: Bringing the Art Experience to Those with Limited Mobility! “In service of community, sparkling opportunities surprisingly arise.” As a hospice volunteer, I challenged Miss Billie to regain enough strength in her failing limbs to allow us to visit the city museum. Loving art as much as she did, she gave it her best effort, yet could not surmount the toll of her years. So, like the mountain coming to the prophet, I began bringing pieces of the museum, gift shop postcards, to Miss Billie. And how she treasured them! Their power and beauty created a blessed respite from worldly trials and tribulations and celebration ensued! Art has power that flows beyond mere understanding. Art enlivens and nourishes, stimulates and sustains-indeed, some call it food for the soul. Our museums simultaneously protect, display, explain, and share these gems with a grateful public. Still, there are those individuals who have the desire but lack the mobility to visit our cultural repositories. Designed to work in harmony with museum outreach programs, community charities, and qualifying healthcare facilities, For Love & Art delivers the Art Experience to them. Consistent with their mission of community service, our partner museums have generously provided imagery of their popular works, with apt commentary. These vibrant images displayed in ArtBooks are then donated to area hospices, hospitals, Senior Living Communities, VA Medical Centers, and similar venues. Caregiver volunteers share the masterpieces of these great museums with their residents sparking conversation, reflection, recollection and celebration. Philanthropic organizations and individuals collaborate in our mission by endowing ArtBooks to worthy facilities in their communities. I invite you to take action now, help fulfill the project in your community and heighten the quality of life for hundreds of individuals who otherwise would not be able to share in the Art Experience... For Love & Art.

Mission: For Love & Art brings the Art Experience to those with limited mobility. For Love & Art is in the business of healing, rejuvenating and ‘dusting’ broken spirits - even if just for a little while - through simple human love, digital technology and the preternatural power of art. For Love & Art brings treasures from great American museums - among the greatest works of genius the world has ever known - directly into the hearts of our communities. To hospice. To hospitals. To senior Living. To VA Medical Centers. To family. Our unreasonable goal is to endow every such facility with ArtBooks, regardless of their ability to self-fund. Our commitment is that all people embrace beauty, joy and magic of life through the power of art. Philosophers claim art is the gateway to the eternal. We claim love and art set the spirit free. Join us, together we will bring For Love & Art to your community.

As we do with all clients, we showcased the collection at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art to the residents at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village - Coppell.

Among the many folks we met was a Monsignor in retirement. (I never presented to a priest before, that I know of, at least).

Sharing my Catholic heritage, I proclaimed, "Look, Father, this is what altar boys turn into when they grow up!"

"And this," the wise man retorted, "Is what Monsignors turn into when they grow up."

After much debate over 5 worthy candidates, Martin Johnson Heade was chosen as "Best in Show." Interestingly enough, Lorraine was wearing the same orchid pink as featured in this marvelous stunner!

WE LOVE NEW CLIENTS!

Today, we were able to introduce ourselves to the Ventana by Buckner and pierced the hearts of all in attendance!

Featuring our favorite introductory museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (thanks, Alice), viewers could "smell the fresh air" of upstate Pennsylvania in the fall.

Isn't it glorious? We hope to bring many adventures to the residents of this tony high-rise for sophisticated seniors!

Special thanks to "Art Angel in Training" @Darryl Malloy for his participation.

"The Immaculate Conception" won Best in Show today at Golden Acres Living and Rehabilitation.

We never tire of astonishing and comforting our grateful clientele and never cease to acknowledge our partner museums, such as National Gallery of Victoria, our first international ally.

I jokingly confess my relative ignorance to my residents that, "I am writing about artists I never heard of, and it's already two inches thick!"

Today's "Best in Show" is by Cornelius de Vos, frankly a fellow I hadn't hear of until my participation in this project. We have two of his works, one housed at National Gallery of Victoria in Australia and the other at Государственный Эрмитаж. The State Hermitage museum. Official page. in Russia. Each are outstanding.

The technical detail, use of color, and display of love between mother and child could not be more apparent. No wonder the good residents at Mustang Creek Estates in Sachse loved it so, as do I.

Holy Buckets, look at this!

No wonder this fabulous painting of a woman "making an entrance" in an elegant German restaurant won "Best in Show" at today's presentation at The Tradition-Prestonwood!

We were proud to host The Dallas Foundation's AWARE Fund decision makers at this therapeutic intervention. Barbara and Stacey really understood that where we come from is Love.

Much thanks, as ever, to the good people at Государственный Эрмитаж. The State Hermitage museum. Official page.for their participation.

Today, I was greeted by a resident at Mustang Creek Assisted Living who burst into tears when she saw me.

"Gee, Vee, are you happy to see me or are you sad?"

"Both," she whimpered.

We visited Clark Art Institute Wiiliamstown MA and celebrated the beautiful artworks there. Everyone had something to say. By the end of this therapeutic art intervention, Vee was on Cloud 9, gleeful!

People are so lonely these days. Please, if you have an hour or so, go visit an isolated senior in your local nursing home. It's not so important that we're the group that does this; it is important, though, that it gets done.

By the way, this beautiful Mary Cassatt was chosen as "Best in Show!"

FOR LOVE & ART celebrates Black History Month by telling the little known tale of a great African who became an American, Yarrow Mamout.

Yarrow was born Muslim in Guinea, Africa in 1838 and came to America in chains in 1757. A slave for 44 years, Yarrow used every opportunity to learn as much as he could to master any task, and was granted his freedom in 1801.

His expertise in many enterprises allowed him to contract for his services at high prices. Soon enough, he invested in land in Georgetown and became the embodiment of the American Dream, retiring wealthy and sending his grandchildren to Harvard University.

44 years a slave and now a millionaire!

We appreciate Yarrow's legacy of hard work, ingenuity, and strategic planning to escape the most dire of circumstances to achieve his goals. His story represents the triumph of the human spirit and the incredible opportunity being free and enterprising in America provides. We salute him, and all like him, regardless of race or religion.

Philadelphia Museum of Art houses his portrait painted by America's leading artist of the day, Charles Willson Peale.

One could spend an hour just pouring over the many charms of this painting, voted "Best in Show" by the captivated residents of Prestonwood Court!

Not only is Lady Mary a delightful subject matter, the artist showed exceptional mastery in the use of colors and shapes in creating this work. Notice how the sky matches the color of the child's sash (obi).

Notice how he gave Lady Mary a soul, clearly visible by the light in her wide eyes. If you think this is not an important feature in artwork, search for paintings without such light and see if you like them. I suggest you will not, and you may not know why. By giving Lady Mary a soul, the artist claims her as being a child of God, and our higher Selves recognize her as kin.

Some say art is the Gateway to the Eternal. Volumes could be written about the spiritual aspects of fine art.

Many thanks to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art for their ongoing participation in our creative project!

Vincent melted their hearts at Mercer Place, part of Enlivant Senior Living.

This was a very productive year for anxious Vincent (it is reported that he drank up to 23 cups of coffee a day) as he produced 3 paintings a day.

He died the following year, reportedly by his own hand. We suspect he died of exhaustion.

"Reverie" refers to a state of day-dreaming. There is so much to notice about this painting...look, for example, how the colors traipse throughout the work, the contrasts between cold and hard to soft and warm, and the beauty's state-of-mind.

Surrounded by riches, is she truly happy? What clues can you find that point to what may be missing in her life?

K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple, Sweetheart!

Chardin's beautiful flowers rated "Best of Show" at Parsons House Preston Hollow this afternoon.

Look how the simple elegance and symmetry of this vase astonishes us so. Beauty is not an intrinsic characteristic of a painting; rather, it is an emotion distinguished by a curious viewer.

Roger Scruton may have said it best, "Beauty is the revelation of God in the here and now."

How's that for a slice of heaven?

We are immensely grateful to Scottish National Galleries and all of our partner museums for assisting us in bringing messages like this to so many people.

There is nothing funner than sharing the Art Experience with folks who are curious and willing to be astonished!

I took the good people at The Tradition-Lovers Lane Assisted Living on a tour through the National Gallery, London today and of all the kings and queens, Greek and Christian Gods and goddesses, majestic steeds, sweeping landscapes or historical artifacts we viewed, this young man generated the most interest and conversation and was dubbed "the Best in Show."

Imagine that! His charm is accentuated by the fact that this was among the first "common people" ever depicted in great art.

Who would have imagined that this young fellow would trump great figures throughout history and be adored above all?

Would you?

The jovial group at Ashford Hall were simply seduced by Lady Agnew of Lochnaw.

Aren't we all?

John Singer Sargent pleaded for some time for this beauty to sit for him, but her frequent illnesses kept her bed bound. Finally, she agreed.

When this painting was put on exhibition, it was sensational, and all of high society wanted Lady Agnew to grace their dinner, ball, party, etc.

With such an active social life, this beauty escaped the languor of illness and became a bright light in her community and beyond. She lived fully and well for many years.

Participation is certainly among the keys in LIVING LARGE!

We thank Scottish National Gallery Edinburgh the Mound for allow these life-lessons to be learned through great art!

Our Story

For Love and Art Project: Bringing the Art Experience to Those with Limited Mobility! Using Museum Art To Transform the Quality of Life for Seniors and Hospice since 2010! As a hospice volunteer, I challenged Miss Billie to regain enough strength in her failing limbs to allow us to visit the city museum.

In 2010, my passions for hospice volunteering and visiting museums merged into what soon became For Love & Art (FL&A), a 501(c)3 enterprise whose mission is to bring the Art Experience to those with limited mobility. Termed "therapeutic art," our service stimulates art appreciation while empowering caregivers to love people in creative and transformative ways. FL&A partners with an ever-expanding collegial collaboration of major museums around the world who have given us express permission to use artworks from their collections as engagement tools for seniors and hospice. Together, we reach populations at the grassroots that would otherwise have no chance to see - let alone formulate and express their opinions about - these beautiful works of art.

We showcase their treasures in two creative ways:

During our crowd-pleasing hour-long "Celebrating the Art Experience" program, trained FL&A volunteers showcase a partner museums' collection on a senior community's big-screen television while actively engaging audience members to express their thoughts and feelings. All points of view are considered, validated, and appreciated. Through sharing of experiences, fear, loneliness and boredom transform into Beauty, Joy, and Magic of Life for each participant.

Our Virtual Museum ArtBooks contain nearly 2,000 digitized artworks separated by museum. After being custom dedicated to donor specifications, these digital ArtBooks are endowed (usually as memorial gifts) to hospices and used by volunteers bedside. Given that one's experience while viewing art is based on 20% of what's there and 80% on one's creative and fertile imagination, people immediately tend to share about matters in their lives that are very important to them. This level of intimacy and trust between caregiver and those they serve is a necessary prerequisite for inducing meaningful end of life conversations. It supplants any fear of dying with gratitude for having lived a wonderful life.

Veterans FL&A deliver "Special Edition" Virtual Museum ArtBooks to VA Medical Centers that include mildly graphic images of war. Therapists use these as engagement tools during exposure therapy sessions for veterans coping with stress issues.

Kids FL&A endows Virtual Museum ArtBooks to children's hospitals. Quality of life professionals enjoy the creative aspects of sharing the Art Experience vs. the passivity of watching television. Kids learn a thing or two about art and museums, but mostly learn how to appreciate art and others' points of views.

We invite you to become part of our project, either as a volunteer or patron.

We're amassing an army of volunteers who eagerly visit seniors and hospice and use the great treasures of the world to elevate their quality of life mind, body, and soul. In many cases, we are introducing the wonder of art to people who have never considered its value for themselves and, in the process, reveal our shared humanity. Please consider volunteering now.

Patrons sustain our viability and sustainability so that we can continue to do what we do so well. Many endow Virtual Museum ArtBooks to eligible healthcare communities as memorial gifts to honor a loved one. Please consider donating now.

We invite you to take action and help fulfill the project in your community. You will heighten the quality of life for hundreds of individuals who otherwise would not be able to share in the Art Experience... For Love & Art.

What a rewarding volunteer effort. Making people happy in a senior living home is like giving a gift to yourself each time.
For Love & Art brings such happiness to those seniors who have limited mobility and must now live in communities such as assisted living facilities, memory care units, nursing homes, and hospices. As an Art Angel, I get to watch their reactions and listen to their comments as they view the beautiful works of art we share with them from world class museums who have so generously partnered with us. It is an indescribable joy for me! ☺️

"For Love & Art" is nothing less than life changing for the seniors it engages and for the volunteers who are privileged to watch those precious people become transformed by the beauty of art. It is a magical experience for all!
