WEDNESDAY, September 30 at 3 PM

Inside the Museum Collection

What is an artifact? Participants will discover what makes something a museum artifact, why artifacts matter, what clues they can reveal about the past, and how museums care for, display, and store these pieces of history. They’ll also get a special look at unique artifacts from the museum’s collection.

The program will target children aged 9-12 years old, but all are welcome.

“The British Capture of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania”

Yesterday, 249 years ago on Friday, September 26, 1777, Sir William Howe and the British army outmaneuvered General George Washington and the American army to enter into and occupy Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. Outcome: the capture of the Capital of the United States of America followed the abandonment of the city by the Continental Congress which resulted from a string of American defeats by the British at the Battle of Brandywine on Thursday, September 11, 1777; the Battle of the Clouds (also known as the Battle of Warren, the Battle of Whitehorse Tavern or the Battle of Goshen) on Tuesday, September 16, 1777; and the Battle of Paoli (also known as the Battle of Paoli Tavern or the Paoli Massacre) on Saturday, September 20, 1777 - all part of the Philadelphia Campaign.

Aftermath: for 1 day - Saturday, September 27, 1777 - Lancaster, Pennsylvania became the new American Capital. York, Pennsylvania next played host to the United States Capital from Saturday, September 28, 1777 to Saturday, June 27, 1778. Thereafter, the Capital returned to Philadelphia for the duration of the war which officially ended on Wednesday, September 3, 1783.

Tomorrow - Saturday, September 26, 2026 is the big day!

Please join us at 1:00 P.M. at the Rappahannock River Campground in eastern Culpeper County, Virginia for the unveiling and dedication of a significant historical marker by The Museum of Culpeper History and Mannahoac Story Alliance. This marker is dedicated to the "Mannahoac of the Piedmont" - the Siouan-speaking Indigenous people who once occupied the rolling hills of what is now Central and Northern Virginia. The Rappahannock River Campground is located at 33017 River Mill Road, Richardsville, Virginia 22736-2018. We hope to see you there!
