Today marks the 93rd anniversary of the death of Augusta Saint-Gaudens. It is through her initial efforts that the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park exists today. In 1917, Augusta conceived the idea to creating a living memorial to her husband. Through the incorporation of the Saint-Gaudens Memorial, Augusta ensured the preservation of the home, studios, gardens, and art collection.

This month, we will be celebrating her legacy with a special exhibition, "Augusta Homer Saint-Gaudens: Stepping Out of the Shadows" Please join us on July 20th for the Curator's talk and reception at 4:30 PM.

This month for #waybackwednesday, we are stepping back in time to 1900! For the 1900 #ParisExhibition, Augustus Saint-Gaudens debuted the Sherman Monument as he was working on it in his Paris studio. In that time Saint-Gaudens was awarded the #GrandPrize. The #Sherman now stands in Grand Army Plaza, New York City. At #SaintGaudensNHP, you can see a reduction of #Victory, a study of Sherman and even a part of the horse!

Did somebody say #DowntonAbbey?
The Saint Gaudens family embraced new technology changes including a gravity fed water system to service three upstairs bathrooms, central heat from a coal burning furnace, and a battery-operated annunciator or call box to summon staff. The Noxall Annunciator (c. 1889, oak, glass, brass) was considered among the best on the market for quality and low cost. The call box was wired to buttons in different rooms. Pressing the button sent a signal to the box dinging the bell, while a magnetic needle flipped up to indicate the call's point of origin. Staff could reset the needle by pressing the knob on the bottom of the box. Push buttons and floor key versions were installed throughout Aspet sometime in 1900. On your next visit to Aspet, see if you can find a button location on the west porch..

On June 25, 1906 Stanford White was enjoying dinner in the restaurant of Madison Square Tower, the building he designed, when he was shot and killed by Harry Kendall Thaw, who was obsessed about White's previous relationship with his wife, actress Evelyn Nesbit. The "trial of the century" followed.
Stanford White, American Architect famous for his Beaux-Arts Architecture and a partner with the firm McKim, Mead & White, designed numerous public buildings where his designs embodied the "American Renaissance". White and Augustus Saint Gaudens were close friends and collaborated on twenty of Saint Gaudens works including the blue stone base of the Farragut Monument, landscaping of the Adams Memorial and Lincoln The Man (Standing Lincoln) Monument along with frames of the Louise Howland and Dr. Henry Schiff portrait reliefs, among others. Stanford White also designed the first Madison Square Garden with its impressive tower topped by Saint Gaudens thirteen foot gilded Diana.

On many Sundays, a different form of art fill the sculptor's studio. Music mingled with the haze of dust and smell of plaster that filled the New York studio of Augustus Saint Gaudens. Beginning in 1882 and continuing for several years, "Gus" and many friends enjoyed small concerts in the acoustically rich space.

Years later, we are proud to host the Annual Summer Concert Series. This celebration of the arts begins Sunday, June 23, with music by the Acacia Trio. These 2pm concerts are sponsored by the Saint Gaudens Memorial and run weekly through August 25. Attendance is free with regular admission.

We hope you have as much fun as Saint-Gaudens pictured here at a party in 1888. Gus, seated second from the right, is flanked by J. Alden Weir and Thomas Dewing on either side of him. Another close friend, Kenyon Cox, emerges from below the table.

When you visit Aspet, the Saint Gaudens Cornish home, be sure and check out the clock in the kitchen. It is a 1878 Ansonia Brass & Copper Company (CT) three hand Terry calendar wall clock, round face, hours in Roman numerals and days in Arabic numbers. For those who only know how to tell time from their cell phones, those three hands, Roman numerals and Arabic numbers are quite baffling. As you see from the photo the clock has stopped at 1:43 on June - (you guessed it) - 18th.

This is the month of #JuneBrides!
Here at #SaintGaudensNHP we celebrate Bessie Springer Smith, bride of Augustus Saint Gaudens' friend and collaborator #StanfordWhite. Bessie sat for her portrait wearing her wedding dress, her hand delicately keeping the veil from her face. Saint Gaudens sculpted Bessie in white marble as a wedding gift to the couple. Bessie's groom, Stanford White, carved the frame made the frame that surrounds the bas-relief.

Cornish, June 6, 1944. As the Allies landed in Normandy for the D-Day invasion, an emergency call rang out in Cornish--There was a fire at the old Saint-Gaudens estate. The flames engulfed the largest studio on site, the Studio of the Caryatids, named for the figures that flanked the front door. Though staff of the Saint-Gaudens Memorial tried to save as much as they could, the building and nearly everything inside (including artwork and many of the artist's papers) were lost to the flames.

In the midst of wartime rationing, the site of the burned studio sat vacant for several years until the end of the war when the New Gallery, Picture Gallery, and Atrium were built nearby.

On view now at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park: Ruby Sky Stiler: Fresco

Ruby Sky Stiler, the 2018 Saint-Gaudens Fellow, created 14 wall-hung reliefs for the exhibition. In her work, Stiler refers to various movements throughout the history of art. She is interested in the relief sculptures and fresco techniques of the Greco-Roman period. She also explores the idea of the female nude, which has appeared in varied forms in twentieth-century abstraction, and in artists’ sketchbooks and drawings. In this exhibition her frames also allude to the intricate carved wooden frames that Saint-Gaudens used in his own relief sculptures.

This week, a risk assessment is being performed on the National Champion Honeylocust located at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park. The assessment includes tomography, a technique providing a cross-sectional image of the interior of the tree to look for signs of decay; limited resistance drilling, which records the thickness of sound wood and allows for strength loss calculations to be made; and aerial inspection (seen here in this photo) to assess structural issues and inspect existing cabling and lighting protection systems. This is all done as part of the park’s historic preservation efforts to protect historic resources, which includes landscape features such as this magnificent tree planted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
