Today we’re taking a look inside the Erikson Schoolhouse, which is located at Norskedalen’s satellite location Thrunegaarden. This artifact is a collection of rubber stamps that would have been used to create more standardized and legible writing than might be possible with ink pens of the time. While these might have been used in a schoolhouse setting, it is also possible that they would have been used by a business as a way to improve the appearance of advertisements, notices, and other public facing documents.

Our stereoscope card for the day is a glimpse into the past of the U.S. parks system. This card titled, “The Famous Wawona Tunnel Tree and Coach, Cal” Shows the Wawona tree as it stood in Yosemite national park. The tunnel through the tree was dug in 1881 and was a popular tourist attraction, inspiring several other tunnel trees in other forests and parks. As you might expect, digging a giant hole in a living tree is extremely hazardous to the tree, which resulted in the tree toppling over in 1969.

As it turns out, spiders have natural predators too. This is a six spotted tiger beetle photographed on Norskedalen’s Goat Prairie. They are easily distinguishable by the striking green metallic shine of their armor. These are nimble and fast predators that prey on spiders, caterpillars, and ants. They are so fast in fact that they can only sprint for short distances because they accidentally blind themselves while speeding.

Eco friendly gardening produces results! Just look at what we found slithering beneath the geranium habitat in front of the Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center!

This is a Dekay’s Brown Snake (not to be confused with the Australian Brown Snake which is highly venomous!). One of the most misidentified snakes in the eastern United States, the brown snake looks a lot like a rattlesnake to some people, but this little guy is completely harmless feeding exclusively on invertebrates (Bugs).

But of course, it’s best to know for sure before picking one up.
