On February 15, 2011 George H. W. Bush was honored by President Barack Obama as a recipient of the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“This award is the highest that a President can bestow on somebody,” President Bush said in remarks just before the ceremony. “And I am truly honored, truly honored by it ... I’ve always believed in public service, feel it is a noble calling – a lot of people look down on public service. My dad was in the United States Senate, and I looked up to him as kind of a model. Then life went on and I got involved myself in public life. And so, there wasn’t any single inspiration other than the concept that public service is a noble calling. It’s worth doing, and worth trying to succeed in.”

On this day in 1945, George H. W. Bush married Barbara Pierce in Rye, New York. They were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Rye, and the newlyweds honeymooned on Sea Island, Georgia. George wrote home to his sister, Nancy: “Marriage exceeds all expectations.”

In 2005 as they celebrated their 60th anniversary at a White House Dinner, daughter Doro observed:

Dad said that it was amazing to give a speech where you looked back at a life where you fell in love with a special girl, went to war and got shot down, got pulled out of the Pacific Ocean, and somehow went home alive. Then you married that special girl and together set out on an incredible journey marked by tremendous challenges and heartbreak and joy that led to the White House and beyond. Then, to be able to give such a speech in the White House because of what your son had accomplished … well, let’s just say the tears flowed.

Thirty years ago this month, George Bush met Mikhail Gorbachev off the Mediterranean island nation of Malta for their first face-to-face meeting as leaders of their respective countries. This brand new blog posting is based on excerpts from 41’s book A World Transformed that focus on that historic Malta Summit, which took place December 2-3, 1989 in Valetta Harbor – also remembered as the “Seasick Summit” owing to the abysmal weather roiling the seas that week. As always, both President Bush and his national security advisor, General Brent Scowcroft, recounted their own memories of these momentous events in alternating passages.
