Coronavirus Information

Friends,

The University of Maryland (UMD) is actively monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (termed “COVID-19”). As it stands, UMD will have reduced operations the week of March 23, and will be moving to an online environment starting March 30 and continuing at least to April 10.

In light of this news, the last day to see the exhibition "Across the Pane: The Art of Djuna Barnes" will be Friday, March 13. Beginning Monday, March 16 and continuing at least until April 10, the Art Gallery and Gallery Office will remain closed. Despite our physical closure, Art Gallery staff will be working remotely and will be available to answer any museum-related questions Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, at [email protected].

More info can be found at umd.edu/virusinfo.

Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Furloughed Friends in the Washington, DC area:

I want to personally invite you to be my honored guests at the opening of Here and Now: Recent Acquisitions on Wednesday, January 30th, 5 pm to 7 pm. Bring your families for an evening of free food and complimentary wine and beer. (While supplies last.) All are welcome!

It is my sincere hope that this evening allows those affected by the Federal shutdown to have a moment of enjoyment and pleasure during very difficult and trying times. While the University of Maryland Art Gallery's operations are not directly affected by the shutdown, we nonetheless have an ethical obligation to go above and beyond by making art and culture accessible to all when our colleagues on the National Mall are prevented from doing so.

Director

Did you know that the Small Museum Association's 2019 Conference will be held in College Park, MD, February 17-19? Our gallery director Taras W. Matla and graduate assistant Abby R. Eron will be conducting a round table discussion titled "Invisible Hands: Achieving Excellence Through an Economical and Diverse Student Workforce."

This roundtable explores the impactful role student labor plays at small museums. Whether they work as graduate students, on a voluntary basis or through subsidized programs such as federal work-study, students gain practical skills that translate to vast expertise in the field, resume enhancing opportunities, and personal growth.

"Has the time come for craft to be accepted into the art cannon?" Folk art enters the spotlight as scholars discuss its place in art history. Great article on this trending topic from last week's CAA Advancing Art & Design conference.

#FunFactFriday Cluster Fields is a brand new work by Composers Inside Electronics, a group of artists, composers, and engineers who use advanced technology to create interactive sound-based installations. Because the work is controlled remotely by computer, new sounds and effects are being added constantly, so the work is never the same twice. Hear it for yourself now at the UMD Art Gallery!
