The Coggon Historical Society is in need of your assistance. We have run into some very unexpected expenses as a result of broken water pipes this past winter at Historical Hall (former Masonic/Lower Level) building.

Here's our problem:

The floor repair that started today uncovered far more serious water damage than we anticipated. The $1,000 estimate will now exceed $2,000.

We must do this repair the right way and so we are asking you to consider making a donation to the CCHS to help with this portion of the repairs. We still have plumbing and flooring repairs to come!

We are a 501c3 non-profit corporation and your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law.

At this point we can accept checks payable to:
Coggon Community Historical Society or CCHS
C/O 422 3rd St S
Coggon, IA 52218
OR

Call 319-551-7388 and someone will be glad to pick up your donation.

Please include your name and address so a tax donation letter may be sent to you.

THANK YOU!

Don’t forget to stop by the Coggon Public Library to check out one of the hair wreaths belonging to CCHS! One has to admire the intricate artistry needed to create this unusual artifact.

We are so grateful to the GCRCF for their support of our organization....and our storeroom/display area is too! No more leaks!

When the roof of the Clemons House started leaking, the Coggon Community Historical Society applied for a grant to the President's Fund to help repair it. The funding helped save the 130-year-old house that holds the town's historic artifacts. It's another example of the impact of grantmaking on our community that is made possible by caring donors. The CCHS and Faith Mission Thrift Store were thankful to have two Americorps teams here in late February!
Thanks also to Diane Knott and the Coggon Public Library for displaying items for us again.
Stop in and check out the human hair wreath at the library now....sometimes done as a memorial; sometimes to showcase the artistry.

A recent donation has been framed and is now displayed in the Clemons House kitchen. This advertising NAPKIN came in a box of donated items last year...and was in perfect condition. We think this dates to the late 1920’s/1930’s based on the businesses listed.

VINTAGE HATS ON DISPLAY AT COGGON PUBLIC LIBRARY. We have once again 'raided' the Clemons House and in cooperation with the Coggon Public Library (Thanks, Diane Knott), have a display of some of our vintage artifacts. My favorite is the green feathered hat; but all have a personality that must surely have reflected the style of the ladies wearing them. I wish we had more information about who they belonged to and what years they were worn....alas our records do not have that information.
Nevertheless.....please stop at the Coggon Library and enjoy a peek into earlier eras when a hat was an Easter staple.

The CCHS says 'Thanks so much' to Alan & Deb Zumbach of Anamosa for their generous donation of two framed prints of paintings done by Alan. They depict an old iron bridge over Buffalo Creek north of Coggon and a companion painting of Buffalo Creek. This picture doesn't fully show just how stunning these prints from Alan's originals really are....so you'll have to come see them in person!

We had a recent email asking for information on a Carl R. Bailey of Coggon, IA. Mr. Biggs shares the following information about Carl Bailey and his father Edgar Biggs. If anyone has any knowledge about this man, please reply to this post or email us at [email protected]. We are also searching our records at the Clemons House, but one never knows where the network might lead us! Feel free to share this post.

"Pfc Carl Bailey served with my father, Pfc Edgar Biggs, in Company F, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, in World War II.

To date I have had no success in finding information on Mr. Bailey or his family in the Coggon, IA, area.

Mr. Bailey and my father were wounded in combat on November 18, 1944. Their wounding was reported on the Company F Morning Report of 19 Nov 1944. They were subsequently sent to the 9th Evacuation Hospital for initial treatment. While there they received their second awards of the Purple Heart via 9th Evacuation Hospital General Order #18 of 20 Nov 1944. Mr. Bailey was subsequently awarded a Silver Star Medal via 79th Division General Order #112 of 22 Dec 1944. Note that while the citation refers to action on “18 October 1944,” the actual event occurred on “18 November 1944.” A subsequent amendment to the General Order corrected the date of the citation to that of 18 Nov 1944."
