THANK YOU for you support of our November bake sale through your donations of baked goods or purchases. We made $235 thanks to all of you.
The CCHS has had quite a year with a leaking roof; broken water pipes; a basement 'waterfall'; winterizing items (some yet to be completed); an early winter (so yikes on the utility bills); and a very large beehive to be dealt with next spring (cost approx $2,000).
Thus, we are so very grateful for your support of our bake sales.
Additional donations are always welcome and are tax deductible since we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We now have a PayPal link for donations at our website coggonhistorical.org

Upcoming events:

December 1st----BAKE SALE 8-NOON @ COGGON LEGION

December 15th----HOLIDAY DESSERTS @ HISTORICAL HALL FOLLOWING THE MARION BIG BAND CONCERT AT THE COGGON OPERA HOUSE. CONCERT 2PM---HOLIDAY DESSERTS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING.

Thanks so much to everyone who supported our bake sale today. We netted $187.00. Thanks to our members who donated as well as community members, Peggy Schott and Pat Bell.
Look for our bake sale again next month on Sunday, November 3, 2019 in conjunction with the Coggon Legion Pancake Breakfast from 8-noon.

09/29/2019

CCHS will be hosting a bake sale on October 6, 2019 from 8am-Noon in conjunction with the Coggon Legion Pancake Breakfast. Stop by to purchase some goodies or if you love to bake, feel free to donate to our cause.

The Legion will have pancake breakfasts the first Sunday of each month from October through April. CCHS will be hosting bake sales at each of those breakfasts.

These fundraisers are important to our group as we have had a number of most unexpected expenses this year.....and we're not quite done yet, with several winterizing items that have been postponed and now must be addressed.

Your support of this bake sale or your donations are always much appreciated as we work to preserve and protect Coggon's history.

The Coggon Historical Society is in need of your assistance. We have run into some very unexpected expenses as a result of broken water pipes this past winter at Historical Hall (former Masonic/Lower Level) building.

Here's our problem:

The floor repair that started today uncovered far more serious water damage than we anticipated. The $1,000 estimate will now exceed $2,000.

We must do this repair the right way and so we are asking you to consider making a donation to the CCHS to help with this portion of the repairs. We still have plumbing and flooring repairs to come!

We are a 501c3 non-profit corporation and your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law.

At this point we can accept checks payable to:
Coggon Community Historical Society or CCHS
C/O 422 3rd St S
Coggon, IA 52218
OR

Call 319-551-7388 and someone will be glad to pick up your donation.

Please include your name and address so a tax donation letter may be sent to you.

THANK YOU!

We are so grateful to the GCRCF for their support of our organization....and our storeroom/display area is too! No more leaks!

When the roof of the Clemons House started leaking, the Coggon Community Historical Society applied for a grant to the President's Fund to help repair it. The funding helped save the 130-year-old house that holds the town's historic artifacts. It's another example of the impact of grantmaking on our community that is made possible by caring donors. Thanks also to Diane Knott and the Coggon Public Library for displaying items for us again.
Stop in and check out the human hair wreath at the library now....sometimes done as a memorial; sometimes to showcase the artistry.

A recent donation has been framed and is now displayed in the Clemons House kitchen. This advertising NAPKIN came in a box of donated items last year...and was in perfect condition. We think this dates to the late 1920’s/1930’s based on the businesses listed.

VINTAGE HATS ON DISPLAY AT COGGON PUBLIC LIBRARY. We have once again 'raided' the Clemons House and in cooperation with the Coggon Public Library (Thanks, Diane Knott), have a display of some of our vintage artifacts. My favorite is the green feathered hat; but all have a personality that must surely have reflected the style of the ladies wearing them. I wish we had more information about who they belonged to and what years they were worn....alas our records do not have that information.
Nevertheless.....please stop at the Coggon Library and enjoy a peek into earlier eras when a hat was an Easter staple.

The Coggon Community Historical Society (founded in 1981) invites you to visit us this weekend during Harvest Home! We will be open Friday, August 11 from 5:00-8:00 pm and Saturday, August 12 from 6:00-8:00 pm. While you're here.....check out the mustache teacup; the 'New Coggon School' dish is on display in the advertising room along with a few others and none are alike; ask about the Palace Pharmacy pocket watch----the Palace Pharmacy was the original business in the Masonic Lodge Building which the CCHS now owns; and the famous/infamous human hair wreaths will also be on display!!!

The CCHS says 'Thanks so much' to Alan & Deb Zumbach of Anamosa for their generous donation of two framed prints of paintings done by Alan. They depict an old iron bridge over Buffalo Creek north of Coggon and a companion painting of Buffalo Creek. This picture doesn't fully show just how stunning these prints from Alan's originals really are....so you'll have to come see them in person!

Coggon Community Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. If you are looking to make an end-of-year charitable donation, please consider the Coggon Community Historical Society. Donations to the CCHS are tax deductible as allowed by law.

We are also in the process of considering priorities for the Masonic Building which we now own.,,,,on that list is a new furnace/heating system; door replacements; and upgrades to the kitchen area.

The CCHS has been 'Harboring History since 1981'.

A cousin and I are attempting to locate descendants of James and Matilda Ironside who lived north east of Troy Mills in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Their children were Margaret, George, Ellen, Edwin (Edward), Janet, William, James, Edith, Lily and my great-grandmother Elizabeth. A cousin is seeking information about them and would like to meet some of her cousins. You can contact me via FB or email ([email protected]). Thanks! Deb (Rowe) Sands.
Looking forward to Helen's Birthday Party!
Hello, I'm wondering if the Coggon Historical Society can help me out. Alonzo Clemons' son Andrew J Clemons was the second husband of my 2nd great-grandmother, Nina Belle Snow Hamilton Clemons. Her first husband was Andrew's friend, James Woodbury Hamilton, who was postmaster at Coggon. James Woodbury Hamilton was born 11 April 1859 in Cornwall, IL and died in Coggon on 17 October 1895. He was only 36 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. I'm making a short video about James Woodbury Hamilton. His older brother, John Taylor Hamilton, was mayor of Cedar Rapids in 1878, was elected to Congress in 1890 and President of the Merchants National Bank in Cedar Rapids. His other brothers William Wallace and Porter Hamilton were all in business together and were very successful. I'm trying to figure out what happened to James Woodbury Hamilton. Why wasn't he in business with his successful brothers? Who appointed him postmaster of Coggon? Did his wife Nina Belle becomes postmaster of Coggon after his death? And what did he die of at such an early age? I can't find a death record for him, or any indication of what he died from. Nina Belle Hamilton seems to have been in a bad way after his death. JW Hamilton's very wealthy family apparently did not reach out to her to help her or the two young children James Woodbury left behind. (One of those children was my great-grandfather Wallace Hamilton, who married Hazel Hall, daughter of Lincoln Grant Hall, owner of the Palace Pharmacy in Coggon.) Does anyone in Coggon know this history? Are there any Hamilton family records to look over for a cause of death for James Woodbury Hamilton? Any other info you can share? Thank you for any help you can provide in solving this mystery!
We would like to thank Delores and Bob for the nice visit while our Class of 1958 visited today. The Historical Society has done a wonderful job. We also visited the Library and the school. There were only 10 of us but we really enjoyed our time. Thanks so much.
