One World Day: https://clevelandoneworldday.org/2022/event-map/
Russian Cultural Garden's delegation is going under the umbrella of the faith and hope for the victory and revival of Ukraine, as well as the hope for the rebirth and rising of Russia after the dark Putin era. The symbol of our hope is the Phoenix, an immortal bird that takes on new life, rising from the ashes of its predecessor. We are against the aggressive war in Ukraine and anywhere in the world, and we stand for peace through mutual understanding.
Будьте добры, дайте знать, если вы будете участвовать в Параде. Оставьте комментарий или пошлите мне личное сообщение.
PS. Все про-рашистские и "остроумные" комментарии будут нещадно удаляться. Спасибо за понимание.

St Patrick’s Day – a return to some semblance of normalcy
It was great to be in downtown with hundreds of thousands of people last Thursday for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. After missing it for 2 years because of Covid, the crowds were large and friendly and eager to celebrate again. We are in the process of posting all the videos and pictures on ClevelandPeople.com from the grand day but I wanted to highlight 2 for now.
It’s been 4 years since any Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) school has been able to march in the Parade. So it was great to see students from John Marshall High School representing the CMSD at the 2022 Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The group included members of the High Steppers, the ROTC Color Guard and Drill, the Drum Line and some members of the band. The John Marshall HS Lawyers students were terrific. Watch a short video at https://youtu.be/PuMfz_CjOgI
Also, each year the formal start of the Parade is on the steps of the Bishop Cosgrove Center on Superior. Most people never get to see this. MC Jim Kilbane introduced Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, Bishop Edward Malesic and the honorees from both 2022 and 2020 including the Grand Marshals Thomas Scanlon (2020) and Thomas McManamon. Katie Cooper led the Irish and US national anthems and Bishop Malesic gave an opening prayer. Then the two grand marshals blew the whistles to start the parade. It’s a part of the Parade you might not normally see. https://youtu.be/43pAEXCHoHY

Ukraine
While thousands of revelers were in downtown Cleveland celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, about 300 people gathered in Grand Hall at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Parma for a more somber event. Gov. Mike DeWine asked the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services to convene an Ohio Summit on Ukraine Refugees to ensure the necessary services are in place for any Ukrainian refugees who may land in Ohio.
As Russia continues its attack on Ukraine, an estimated 3 million people have been forced from their homeland. Many are in neighboring countries such as Poland, but given the large Ukrainian population in Ohio – specifically in the Parma area – the governor said he wanted to be prepared in case some of the refugees find their way here. “We are very proud of that,” he said, referring to those of Ukrainian heritage who live in the state.
The summit featured representatives of organizations that work with refugees to help them resettle and build successful lives. One such agency is Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland. Heath Rosenberger, program director for Catholic Charities’ Office of Migration and Refugee Services, participated in a panel discussion and provided information about the refugee resettlement process. “Sometimes we only get a week’s notice before a refugee arrives,” Rosenberger said. He explained how MRS swings into action to locate appropriate, safe housing for the refugees, to prepare the housing, including cleaning and furnishing it, and purchasing food. In order to facilitate the employment process for refugees, Rosenberger said they seek housing near transportation. Many of the families are large – sometimes eight or 10 people – he said, so it’s important to find suitable housing.
Rosenberger said a number of Afghan refugees resettled in Cleveland last fall. He mentioned St. Ambrose Parish in Brunswick, St. Colman Parish in Cleveland and the Sisters of Notre Dame, all of whom helped find temporary housing for the influx of Afghani refugees until they could find more permanent dwellings.
It’s a shame that it is necessary but heartwarming that people and agencies are stepping up. Besides the donation sites and volunteer opportunities we have listed a simple way to help is to attend the Ukrainian Museum Archives Easter Bazaar this weekend or the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre production. Details on both below.

Coffee Break Ukrainian
I have been a long time user of the Coffee Break Language online training courses (French, Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, German, Swedish and others). They are all free but you can subscribe for extra learning resources.
They have put together a mini "Coffee Break Ukrainian" course which, in one 15-minute coffee break, teaches the basics of Ukrainian. The idea is that this may be useful to those who are providing humanitarian support and assisting refugees. This is available as a video lesson on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC4lh8tfA70
There is also a list of the Ukrainian words and phrases along with translations into Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Czech, Slovak, German and English athttps://coffeebreaklanguages.com/ukr/wordlist-ukrainian.pdf
(If you ever want to experience what it’s like to try and learn English, check out their Coffee Break English series – it’s enlightening.)

Russia and Japan
The after effects of Russia’s invasion continue. In a move Japan’s prime minister called “totally unacceptable,” Russia has halted talks over a post-World War II peace treaty with Japan and ended visa-free entry for former residents of four Russian-controlled islands. Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced the measures Monday while indicating it would also not proceed with joint economic activity on the disputed islands – an apparent response to sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Japan and Russia never signed a peace treaty after WWII, and the status of four islands captured by the Soviets at the end of the war has been a sticking point for more than seven decades. Russia calls the islands north of Hokkaido the Southern Kurils and Japan refers to them as its Northern Territories.
About a month ago we released an Episode of Fun with Maps about the Kamchatka Peninsula at https://youtu.be/WXpsLbafFJ8. It gives some current and historic perspective to the situation of the disputed islands. The more things change…

Musician from Mali - Hendrix of the Sahara
Wednesday March 23
Music Box Supper Club
West Bank of the Flats
Watch a captivating band playing in Cleveland, Vieux Farka Touré. Vieux is the son of legendary Malian guitar player, Ali Farka Touré. Ali Farka Toure was the first of a long line of acclaimed musicians from Mali to find fame in the West. But he wanted his son to focus his life on being a soldier to protect the freedoms that he and his family had achieved in Mali. Vieux defied his father’s wishes and become a musician himself. He’s since transformed his dad's style by playing electric guitar and adding bass and drums to his sound. Eventually (and thankfully), Ali came around to the idea and the two ended up recording a couple father-son tracks just before Ali’s death in 2006.
Vieux continues to carry on the legacy of his father with pride, yet he builds on it with his own electronic blues-rock direction. Touré is often dubbed as the “Hendrix of the Sahara.” Need we say more? More info, get tickets and watch a video https://musicboxcle.com/event/vieux-farka-toure-mar23/

Why are college basketball players so excited to make it to the last hole in golf?
They love the final fore.
The losing coach lamented “We have a great bunch of outside shooters; unfortunately, all our games are played indoors.”
Why was Cinderella such a bad basketball player?
Her coach was a pumpkin.
I play in the senior’s basketball league. We don’t have jump balls. The ref just puts the ball on the floor and whoever can bend over and pick it up gets possession.

Sorry for the long post.
Ukraine
As this horror continues, Clevelanders are doing what they can to help the people of Ukraine. I was so proud of community leaders such as Andrew Fedynsky, Director Ukrainian Museum Archives, Marta Liscynesky-Kelleher, president of the United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio, Dr. Taras Mahlay who is sending medical supplies to Ukraine, Lidia Trempe (donations from Rudy’s Bakery), Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter and volunteer Solomia Bida who told their story to a CNN news crew on Saturday. Watch it at https://twitter.com/cnn/status/1502786727383031811?s=21&fbclid=IwAR1QYWQy9tHBlRKPLQ4Z_As2QYpARGxKzeAJ0Zrr--9MyylZpmfu_nqVt1g
There are many ways to help the people of Ukraine. And some scams. Our advice is to connect with one of the major legitimate organizations such as the Red Cross and to help the local efforts led by the people and organizations above as much as possible. We have a list at http://www.clevelandpeople.com/groups/ukrainian/ukrainian.htm and Global Cleveland has links to places you can volunteer and donate physical goods including Medworks and Medwish International, Parma’s Pokrova Ukranian Greco-Catholic Church and United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio. https://globalcleveland.org/UKRAINE/
Rallies and prayer services continue to be held such as the special prayer service in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, led by Bishop Edward Malesic. “We gather to pray for peace in response to the unbelievable cruelty and violence we are witnessing against the people of the Ukraine,” the bishop told the gathering. “You share my horror at the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, the senseless deaths of innocent people and the destruction taking place within their country. I know there are many people of Ukrainian descent here in our community who have loved ones who are currently in harm’s way. For you and for them, I offer the prayers and the support of our Catholic community.”
Father Volodymyr Hrytsyuk, rector of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Parma, shared a short list of three meaningful actions we should all consider. “I am asking you to pray for the Ukrainian people, to be the spiritual warriors of peace. The unjust war that is always instigated by the devil needs to be overcome by prayer and fasting. Please don’t be silent and speak out to the American public and the American authorities to help alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainian people. I am also asking you to speak up and help open the borders for the Ukrainian refugees to be able to come to the United State," he said.
Ukraine is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It is heartbreaking to see the pictures of devastation on the news. Here is a reminder of some of the beauty of Ukraine that we pray will be spared or restored. https://www.boredpanda.com/beautiful-ukraine-pics

Hungarian Celebration
On March 15, 1848, Sándor Petőfi recited his poem entitled Nemzeti Dal for thousands of Hungarians on the stairs of the National Museum. This passionate recitation marked the beginning of the revolution. Today, the Revolution of 1848 serves as a memorial for democracy and freedom and the Hungarian people's struggle to attain both. March 15 is a national holiday in Hungary and is commemorated by Hungarians all over the world.

St. Patrick’s Day
Of course you know that St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated on Thursday March 17. And the Parade, Ohio’s largest and often drawing half a million people, will be back live and full force after two years of Covid.
But what you usually don’t hear from the media is the religious aspect of the day. For most people of Irish heritage, St. Patrick’s Day festivities begin with Mass on March 17.
The West Side Irish American Club will have its traditional Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Colman Church, 2027 W. 65th St., Cleveland. The club’s honorees will attend and participate in the liturgy. Bishop Edward Malesic will be the main celebrant. Vincent Beach is the WSIA Man of the Year and Colleen Hansen is the Woman of the Year. The club’s Volunteer of the Year is Christi Cruz and Margaret Lavelle is the WSIA Queen.
The Irish American Club – East Side will have its annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass at 10 a.m. at SS. Robert and William Church, 367 E. 260th St., Euclid. Parade marching units will participate. The club’s co-members of the year are Michael Byrne and Mary Jo Gurry.
St. Patrick Parish in Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood will celebrate the 174th anniversary of the parish during the 9 a.m. Mass on St. Patrick’s Day. The church is at 4427 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland. Pastor Father John Pfeifer will be the principal celebrant. Because of continuing concerns about the pandemic, there will be no social after Mass. The parish will have a unit in the parade.
St. Patrick Church, 3602 Bridge Ave., in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, will celebrate its 169th anniversary beginning with 9:30 a.m. Mass. Auxiliary Bishop emeritus Roger Gries will be the main celebrant. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The Cleveland Firefighters Memorial Pipe and Drum Corps, the Retired Irish Police Society and the parish music group will participate in the liturgy. After Mass, a modified social will take place in the parish hall. The Mass will be livestreamed on the parish website. Call 216-631-6872 for more information.
The 180th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, presented by the United Irish Societies of Greater Cleveland, will step off at 1:04 p.m. at East 18th Street and Superior Avenue. More than 100 units are expected to participate in the parade, which will march west on Superior Avenue towards Public Square. It will disband at Rockwell Avenue and Ontario Street.
This year, the parade theme is Ireland’s Scenic Coastlines and Linda Carney is executive director.
Father Thomas Mahoney will be honored as the Hibernian of the Year.
Thomas McManamon Jr. is the 2022 parade grand marshal. His father was one of the original organizers of the UIS in 1958 and served as its first executive director. He was parade grand marshal in 1977. This is the first time that a father and son will have been grand marshal of the Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We hear that Tom Scanlon who was chosen for Grand Marshal two years ago when the Parade was cancelled will be walking along with Tom this year.
Rita Lally is the 2022 Irish Mother of the Year.
Patricia Lavelle of North Olmsted is this year’s parade inside co-chair and Eileen Mangan Stull is outside co-chair of the 2022 parade.
Father Phil Bernier, OFM Cap, administrator of St. Peter Parish, East 17th Street and Superior Avenue – adjacent to the parade’s starting point – invites everyone to stop by the church for hot chocolate, ☕, tea and bakery items, which will be on sale for a nominal fee. Proceeds will benefit the parish ministry and church restoration fund. Visitors also are welcome to tour the historic church, which dates to 1857. Restrooms will be available.
One of the cool aspects of the Parade is that you will see other ethnicities participating. The Cleveland Asian Festival will be marching as well as a contingent of Polish and other Eastern European groups. The Polish community has not forgotten the support of the Irish community in their successful efforts to reopen St. Casimir Church in Cleveland.

Holi – The Hindu Festival of Colors – March 18
Holi is a popular ancient Hindu festival, also known as the "Festival of Love", the "Festival of Colors" and the "Festival of Spring". The festival celebrates the eternal and divine love of Radha Krishna and signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it celebrates the ≧◠‿◠≦✌of Vishnu as Narasimha Narayana over Hiranyakashipu. It originated and is predominantly celebrated in the Indian subcontinent but has also spread to other regions of Asia and parts of the Western world through the Indian diaspora. Holi celebrates the arrival of spring, the end of winter, the blossoming of love and for many, it is a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships.
In addition to India and Nepal, the festival is celebrated by Indian subcontinent diaspora in countries such as Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, South Africa, Mauritius, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In recent years, the festival has spread to parts of Europe and North America as a spring celebration of love, frolic, and of course, colors.
Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi with a Holika Dahan where people gather, perform religious rituals in front of the bonfire, and pray that their internal evil be destroyed the way Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, was killed in the fire. The next morning is celebrated as Rangwali Holi (Dhuleti) – a free-for-all festival of colors, where people smear each other with colors and drench each other.
We have covered many Holi events over the years but maybe the best representation is at http://www.clevelandpeople.com/groups/asian-indians/2012/holi-house.htm
where you can see the trays of powdered colors being thrown on young and old alike. What a blast!
Chinmaya Mission Cleveland is planning to host a Holi Event but we don’t have the final details yet.

St. Joseph and the Wearing of the Red – March 19
March 19 is the annual Feast of Saint Joseph. La Festa Di San Giuseppe in Italian.
In Sicily, where Saint Joseph is regarded by many as their patron saint, and in many Italian-American communities, thanks are given to Saint Joseph (San Giuseppe) and giving food to the needy is a Saint Joseph's Day custom. In some communities it is traditional to wear red clothing and eat a Neapolitan pastry known as a zeppola on Saint Joseph's Day.
It is also Father's Day in some Catholic countries, mainly Spain, Portugal, and Italy. The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Joseph on the Sunday after Christmas.
In Malta, this has been a day of remembrance since the 10th century A.D. Most businesses shut down for this day for all the celebrations that occur. (See our Fun with Maps episode on Malta for more information at http://www.clevelandpeople.com/fun-with-maps.htm)
In Spain, Saint Joseph's Day is their version of Father's Day, which is called El Dia del Padre. In some parts of Spain it is celebrated as Falles. They feel that Saint Joseph is a good example of what a father figure should be like, which is why they connect these two days.
In Poland, it is necessary to celebrate Imieniny or Namesday, the feast day of one's patron saint; celebrating Saint Joseph's Day is a part of this. Polish families celebrate this day with a Saint Joseph's table in their house that is decorated with red and white for Poland and Saint Joseph. These tables set up in their house include holy cards and candles all around and meatless food in which they call a "festive fast" because it is still Lent.
In the Philippines, especially in rice producing provinces like Iloilo, some families maintain the ritual of holding a banquet for the Holy Family. An old man, a young lady, and a small boy, often chosen from among the poor, are honored as representations of Saint Joseph, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Child Jesus, respectively.
Of course, Saint Joseph's Day is also celebrated in other American communities with high proportions of Italians where observance often is expressed through "the wearing of the red", i.e., wearing red clothing or accessories similar to the wearing of green on Saint Patrick's Day.
And if your name is Joseph or Josephine, you will also be celebrating your “onomastico.” An onomastico honors your “name,” and St. Joseph, St. Francis, St. Anthony, St. Anne, St. Catherine and so forth, are all celebrated name days in Italy. Not quite a birthday, an onomastico is an occasion for Italians to celebrate with family, friends, and of course, a cake or pastries.
So happy onomastico to my friends Joe Meissner, Joe Cimperman, José Feliciano, Joe Feckanin, Joe Valencic, Joe Lamantia, Joe Thomas and all the “Joe’s”

Ethnic Media Going Away?
Thanks to those who wrote or called about the removal of the ethnic radio shows (Hungarian, German and Polish) from the local NPR radio station. That includes a letter from Judge Ralph Perk Jr. president of the American Nationalities Movement.
Andrea Lazar from the Kapossy Hungarian Program gave us this update: “Yesterday, we were forced to make a decision as Ideastream/WCPN gave us one day to accept the HD offer or be off the air totally, and we accepted it. It is a substandard and not a good solution, but it is the only way we can continue to produce this program and be available as an outlet and an outreach to the Hungarian community. And we'll see how it goes. The Polish program will also be on the HD channel, and the German producer did not accept it. Above all, we are humbled and grateful to everyone who called, sent emails or letters explaining in many eloquent and compelling ways why the Hungarian program is important and to allow it to remain on regular radio. Regardless of the outpouring of support, unfortunately, we were not given that option.
Whoever still contacts the station is still valuable in letting them know that their decision does have consequences and these ethnic communities are pretty vocal at having been sidelined. Starting April 3rd, we will be heard on WKSU HD4 on Sundays at 8pm. It is available online at WKSU under the 'All Streams' choice here https://www.wksu.org/hd/
It is also available on smartphones by downloading the WKSU app or on an HD radio in your home or in your car, if you should have that option. If you wish to listen and do not have any of these options available to you, or to a friend or family members, please let us know and we will see how we can be of help.”
It’s a shame. I have a feeling that many of the regular listeners of these ethnic programs may be older and not have HD radios or be comfortable in downloading an app on a smartphone. The Station Manager's name is Jenny Northern. The President and CEO is Kevin Martin, Their phone number is 216-916-6100.

Pundemics – St. Patrick’s Day Edition
Why shouldn't you iron a four-leaf clover?
You don't want to press your luck.
Why do people wear shamrocks on St. Patrick's Day?
Real rocks are too heavy.
What type of music do leprechauns enjoy?
Sham-rock and roll.
Why do leprechauns hate running?
They would rather jig than jog.
Remember, a best friend is like a four-leaf clover—hard to find and lucky to have.
Irish every day could be St. Patrick’s Day.
