Take a peek at our latest event, a private tour of the Keith Haring Exhibit at the Akron Art Museum ❤️

Sloane, the Educator of School Programs, and Katelyn, the Community Programs Lead, at the Akron Art Museum gave a great tour of the Keith Haring exhibit and provided an accessible timeline of his works as well as shared the evolution as he later found out his terminal diagnosis.

Keith Haring wanted to provide art accessible to people of all walks of life in NYC through his chalk drawings and Pop Shop, although he also sold original works to high net worth individuals.

“Haring's popularity grew from his spontaneous drawings in New York City subways—chalk outlines of figures, dogs, and other stylized images on blank black advertising spaces. After gaining public recognition, he created colorful larger scale murals, many commissioned. He produced more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, many of them created voluntarily for hospitals, day care centers and schools. In 1986, he opened the Pop Shop as an extension of his work. His later work often conveyed political and societal themes.”

“Keith Haring’s career in art began with chalk graffiti in New York City subway stations and, during the 1980s, exploded into paintings, drawings, large-scale murals, fashion, and pop culture. The artist channeled his newfound popularity and his signature style of bold and energetic outlines into expressions of love and positivity. He also used his art to make political statements against environmental destruction, racism, homophobia, and more. Ranging from the artist’s best-known imagery to more personal and adventurous works, Keith Haring: Against All Odds will survey the height of his career, from the early 1980s until his death in 1990 at the age of thirty-one. The show will also include artwork by some of Haring’s friends and artistic peers, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and David Wojnarowicz.”

Column & Stripe members joined The Circle - Cleveland Orchestra's Young Professionals for a behind the scenes tour with Cleveland photographer Roger Mastroianni. He presented a collection of moments captured during his 30-year partnership with The Cleveland Orchestra. The photographic retrospective included a historical survey of the orchestra's performances at Severance Hall, their tours abroad, and an exploration of Mastroianni's photographic process from 1992 to the present. 📸

A few fun facts we learned 👇

Severance Hall Screw Up 🔨

During the construction of Severance Hall, John Severance made daily visits to the work site to inspect the progress of the building. Mr. Severance was notoriously picky about every detail of the hall. When Italian jasper for the grand foyer columns arrived in Cleveland, Severance didn't like it and sent it away at the dock. He even wanted to see the fabric for the ushers’ uniforms before the hall opened! With his constant visits, the building crew came to know John Severance very well. The story goes that the team laying the marble floor in the grand foyer decided to play a trick on Mr. Severance. They decided to put the 1-inch brass screw you see above in the floor and see if he noticed. Severance never said anything to the floor layers, but our archivist Deborah Hefling suspects he noticed the screw and, knowing his own perfectionist personality and reputation with the crew, decided to let them have their fun. (Image 4)

Beautiful Ceiling in the Hall ✨

The leaf pattern on the ceiling of Severance Hall is modeled after the lace on Elizabeth Severance’s wedding dress. Her husband, John Severance, dedicated the hall to her after she passed away shortly before its construction.

Egyptomania: Fashion’s Conflicted Obsession

Join us for a talk by Darnell-Jamal Lisby, assistant curator of fashion, exploring the exhibition Egyptomania: Fashion’s Conflicted Obsession.

Egyptian art has long served, and continues to serve, as a primary inspiration for fashion designers, solidifying the legacy of Egyptomania—the influence of the art of ancient Egypt. This exhibition, on view in the CMA’s textile and Egyptian galleries, brings together around 50 objects that explore the influence of Egyptomania in fashion by juxtaposing contemporary fashion and jewelry loaned from around the world with fine and decorative artworks from the CMA collection. Egyptomania: Fashion’s Conflicted Obsession examines designers’ interpretations of themes, such as Egyptian dress, funerary process, and religion, that shape our contemporary perceptions of ancient Egyptian culture.

Following the talk, the curator will be available in the galleries for questions.

This talk is for members of Column & Stripe, Friends of African and African American Art, and Textile Art Alliance. We hope you can join us!

Reservations are required. RSVP by Friday, March 31.

Yesterday evening, and Friends of Photography group joined a discussion hosted by Benjamin Levy, guest curator and PhD candidate in art history at Case Western University, on the exhibition Photographs in Ink.

Since the invention of the medium, the majority of published photographs have been printed through photomechanical processes—images made in printer’s ink rather than produced in the darkroom or digitally. Photographs in Ink explores how artists have responded to the abundance of published photographic images that have saturated our daily lives from the 1850s through the early 2000s.

Born in Cleveland in 1939, John grew up in the neighborhood surrounding the Maltz Performing Arts Center. Moore studied art at Cuyahoga Community College and Kent State University, earning his BFA and MFA. Moore was a curator and instructor at the Cleveland Museum of Art for a decade and his painting Mirrors & Eyes in the CMA’s collection was recently included in the exhibition Currents and Constellations: Black Art in Focus. “Situated in the historic Wade Park District, the Cleveland Museum of Art was established in 1913 and has become one of America’s most visited art museums. There’s no admission fee here, so you can explore the massive 592,000-square-foot complex without any pressure to get through it all in a day — which is good, because there is a lot to see. The museum currently has over 61,000 pieces of art spread across 16 chronically organized departments, beginning in ancient Greece. Presently, “Tales of the City: Drawing in the Netherlands from Bosch to Bruegel” is on display through January 8, 2023, and is exhibiting rarely viewed drawings from the famed Albertina Museum in Vienna. Contemporary artists like Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst have art here, but the Cleveland Museum of Art is most known for its renowned collection of Asian and Egyptian artifacts, along with an array of medieval art. “
