Through giving, we not only uplift lives but also nourish the collective spirit, making our world a better place for all.

The NewBridge Cleveland Center for Arts and Technology is where Shawn Starr Wilson constantly addresses and educates peers, community members, program supervisors, and school administrators/staff on the intersectionality and diversity of Black and LGBTQ+ youth experiences.

While often stereotyped, ignored, and underrepresented, Wilson reminds everyone to listen, respect, and uplift these youth’s voices.

The practice of giving in the Black community has been around for centuries. African American families have—more than any other racial group—contributed the largest portion of their wealth to charity.

Millions of people come together in new ways to amplify their involvement in Black-led philanthropic efforts annually. Support for these organizations brings awareness to Black-led nonprofits’ progress and unresolved challenges.

That’s why heightened visibility and increased funding are critical to these nonprofits’ sustainability. The opportunities surrounding Black Philanthropy Month open the door for people to participate in education around these causes and establish strong charitable relationships that extend far beyond August.

A giving circle brings a group of people with shared values together to collectively discuss and decide where to make a pooled gift. Giving circles use philanthropic collective action for the benefit of their communities.

These groups, which vary in their structure and goals, bring individuals together to learn about community issues and solutions and subsequently use their collective funds to make a difference. Do you have like-minded people to pool your funds with?

Steve Minter’s work so many years ago, created momentum for increased philanthropy in northeast Ohio’s African American communities. As such, it can be said that Steve Minter birthed the movement that inspired “The Soul of Philanthropy Cleveland”, along with the two entities “Celebrate Those Who Give Black”™ and “The Cleveland Black Equity and Humanity Fund” that will remain and deliver value forever.

About The Soul of Philanthropy Cleveland

About The Soul of Philanthropy (TSOP)

The Soul of Philanthropy (TSOP) reframes portraits of philanthropy. Comprising highly innovative presentations of over a dozen vignette stories and more than 50 black-and-white images, the exhibition conjures philanthropic musings across generations. Created by Valaida Fullwood A robust offering of talks, panel discussions and public forums accompany the exhibition and allow groups to explore a broad range of topics to ignite a movement of conscious philanthropy by empowering a generation of Americans to recognize their power and responsibility to give back.

About The Soul of Philanthropy Cleveland (TSOPCLE)

The characteristics, impact, and legacy of African-American charitable giving is an untold narrative in the story of American philanthropy. Black communities have significant giving power. Two-thirds of Black households give $11 billion charitable dollars. Despite Black households just having six percent of the wealth of white households, they give twenty-five percent more than their white counterparts. Traditional philanthropy does not account for the many informal giving pathways that African-American communities participate in, and tend to overlook people of color in traditional giving spaces.

Hello Everyone, my name is Michael Solomon and I was privileged to shoot 6 of the Soul of Philanthropy events. I shoot many events but I must say the SP gatherings were a pleasure to attend and record. It was great to learn so much while shooting a gig. You guys do great work.
Congratulations to The Soul of Philanthropy Cleveland Executive Steering Committee and all who assisted to make the Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited, and Celebrate Those Who Give Black™ exhibitions a roaring success. Growth Opps and our staff enjoyed every moment of it from hosting a reception in our office in July to the closing ceremony this weekend at the Rocket Mortgage Field House. The exhibition made history allowing over 15,000 people in Cleveland to celebrate those who give black. The Soul of Philanthropy Cleveland also coordinated over 20 informative community events at various venues around the city highlighting ways in which people can continue to give back.

The exhibition will continue in partnership with the Cleveland Public Library system at the main branch downtown and will eventually move to the newly renovated Martin Luther King Jr. branch upon completion. We look forward to continuing our support and giving back within our community.

Last night was the final celebration of The Soul of Philanthropy Cleveland and it was great- nothing but networking networking and more networking! So glad I was able to sit on the Marketing Committee and support such amazing programs supporting THOSE WHO GIVE BLACK. So excited for what’s to come! .
