Our next board meeting is tomorrow, Sept 16th, at 7pm, at Borough Hall. All attendees are required to wear a mask. Please join us if you'd like to get involved with CHP- we are always looking for members!

Please join Mayor Bianco, Clayton Council, and our community in gathering at the 9/11 Memorial at the front of Borough Hall on Saturday morning at 9:00am to pay respect on the 20th anniversary of that tragic day.

08/18/2021

Unfortunately we are canceling tomorrow nights CHP meeting, and will hopefully meet again in September. Please stay tuned for more information.

Our next Clayton Historical Society & Museum meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 19 @ 7pm at our museum location.

Congratulations are in order for our own Lady Clippers Softball team who won their first ever Group 1 State Championship! AND also to both boys and girls Varsity Track & Field Teams who won State 1 Group Championships the last few days.

What a historical moment for our borough! Did you get to see the players on our fire trucks parading around tonight?! 🎉

It might not be Clayton, but it’s close enough and a pretty historic fun fact.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of fellow Clayton lifelong resident, and ultimate advocate for our borough, Gene Daniel Costill, passed away this week at age 95.

Born and raised in Clayton, Gene was a 1943 graduate of Clayton High School. Gene dedicated his life to public service and to the Borough of Clayton. He spent two terms on Borough Council beginning in 1958 followed by 5 terms as Mayor and then as Gloucester County Freeholder. Among many other organizations, boards, and committees.

The Mayor and Borough Council of Clayton honored him in 2016 proclaiming his 90th birthday as Gene Costill Day in the Borough to thank him for his many years of service to his hometown.

Gene's most satisfying accomplishment was spearheading his family's campaign to identify and return the remains of his brother, Harold K. "Brud" Costill, who was lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He successfully brought Brud home on September 14, 2019.

More about Gene, “Brud” and the entire Costill Family legacy in our borough is at our museum. We send our condolences and love to everyone mourning this loss.

Happy Spring!
We are starting to work on our next newsletter- this gets sent to all members current on their annual donation.
Please let us know if there are any topics or questions you'd like us to feature in this next issue.

03/18/2021

There will not be a monthly meeting tonight, but we are hoping to be able to safely meet again soon as more people are vaccinated and our state opens some meeting restrictions.
Thank you!

Good Morning Clayton!
Due to today's ice storm and the COVID pandemic CHP members will not be meeting this evening, and our museum will remain closed this weekend.

Our hope is to be open and able to see everyone again soon! In the meantime- please stay safe!

Happy Friday CHP Friends!
As a reminder our museum remains closed this weekend due to COVID restrictions. We hope you all continue to stay safe and healthy at home- and we look forward to opening our doors and seeing you all again eventually.

We hope everyone enjoyed “Trick or Treat, from 6 feet” last night! As hard as it is to continue through COVID social distancing we want to remind you that we’re all living through history right now.

If you’d like to share your Halloween pictures with us, we’d love to archive them in our museum and highlight them in our annual Clayton recap.

Please post to this chain, or feel free to email us ([email protected])

CHP is saddened to learn of the loss of two important residents of Clayton, NJ over the last week. Please click through to read our In Memoriam page for more information on Selma Ann "Sally" Weinstein (1925 - 2020) and Emile E Baptiste (1932-2020).

Sally was the owner and operator of Sally’s Outlet in Clayton for 25+ years until her retirement in 1988.

Emile E Baptiste, a lifelong resident of Clayton, ran his family business, Emile A. Baptiste, Inc., a wholesale flower grower.

We were able to socially distance ourselves in the museum this morning to finally get our latest newsletter together to mail. It felt good to have the windows open and sit at our beautiful table, filling envelopes and thinking about when the museum can be filled again with all of you visiting.

Be on the lookout in your mailbox this week if you’re a member. And if you’d like to join to help financially support our museum, and get our newsletters, please message us. Our entire success is due to our community’s involvement in preserving Clayton’s story!

We hope everyone continues to stay safe and healthy!

We are still gathering your stories and photos from throughout COVID19 in The Borough of Clayton. These will be archived in our historic museum for future generations to look back on 2020. We also will be making a special year-in-review newsletter highlighting how our Borough faced these unprecedented times.

I wanted to dig deep in the archives and share something that will mentally cool us all off mid heat-wave. Here's a #TBT to the Blizzard of 1996, when Clayton and our entire area were hit hard with snow for several days. Doesn't that sound nice right now!
