Associates Illinois Patrons

Associates Illinois Patrons The Associates are a group of young professionals supporting the mission of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums' Illinois chapter.

The Illinois Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that raises funds for the preservation, care, exhibition, and restoration of art in the Vatican Museums. The Illinois chapter of the Patrons was founded in 1993 and is one of seventeen Patrons of the Arts chapters located throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Although the Vatican Museums host over 15,000 visitors each day, the sale of tickets only provides for the daily operation of the museums. The museums are not subsidized by the Holy See and must be self-sufficient which means that the work of restoration and conservation must be supported by Patrons dedicated to the unique spiritual and cultural mission of the Vatican Museums and Pontifical Galleries.

This is a photo of the current Illinois Patrons' restoration project, a stunning tapestry entitled The Wedding of Louis XIV. The Patrons have adopted this project in honor of Archbishop Blase J. Cupich. The photo was taken in the Vatican Museums' Restoration Labs during the Illinois Patrons' most recent trip to Rome in April of 2016.

In 1825 More than half a million pilgrims journeyed to Rome for the 19th Holy Year, for which Pope Leo XII substituted Santa Maria in Trastevere for St Paul’s as a pilgrimage site, since the latter was being rebuilt after a fire.

For the first time Pope Francis speaks about art, museums and society: his unique thought is expressed in a book to be released on 1 December, published by Edizioni Musei Vaticani in collaboration with Mondadori.
Entitled "Papa Francesco - La mia idea di Arte", the book is edited by the journalist Tiziana Lupi. The Pope reiterates, firmly and clearly, on the eve of the Jubilee Year, that "Art must reject nothing and no-one. Like Mercy".

Artwork of the Day - St Andrew - 1629-33 - François Duquesnoy
Marble - Basilica di San Pietro, Vatican

The "Duques" is in the middle of artists trying to "duke it out:" The year was 1630. The battle of the Baroque verses Classicism begins. Pietro da Cortona led the Baroque faction with Bernini. Painters Andrea Sacchi and Nicolas Poussin championed the classical cause together--and also on the team was Flemish sculptor Duquesnoy, who lived in Rome during 1618-43.
Duquesnoy's figure of St Andrew stands in St Peter's opposite Bernini's St Longinus. Let's compare: At first glance both figures have a Baroque flair in the drama and drapery. Bernini's composition, however, is unquestionably more dynamic and fluid; In contrast, Duquesnoy' figure is absolutely static and posed. The wooden cross as Andrew's backdrop does not guide the eye, but rather together with his slightly over-elaborate draperies renders the figure rather stagnant. #vaticanmuseums #art #artworkoftheday

We are pleased to share the news that the Associates' restoration project, Marble Base Carved by the V Century Prefect of Rome, has begun! After studying and analyzing the surface of the piece the restorer started to clean small test areas. As you can see from the photos below, the lower corner, free from the layer of dust, has regained its original brightness! We are excited to be following the progress of this wonderful piece. Thank you The Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums

#didyouknow that St. Peter’s Basilica has been around for more than 300 years longer than Vatican City?
St. Peter’s Basilica was consecrated in 1626 after 120 of construction work--and "X" marks the spot! It was built exactly over the remains of Peter, Apostle of Christ and first Pope of the church. Christ said, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church..." (Matt. 16:18). The Papacy leads back from the time of Christ and early Christianity, but Vatican City as an official independent nation has only existed since the 1929 Lateran Treaty signed between the Italian government and the Holy See.
