Hello Everyone! Our Partners at NEIU are hosting a workshop on creating successful History Fair documentaries.

Please join our session: Creating a Successful Documentary Project: A Workshop with Professor Cyndi Moran

Are you creating a documentary project and wondering how to make the most of your material? This one-hour workshop will demonstrate the resources and techniques you need to take your documentary project to the next level. The workshop presenter, Cyndi Moran, has advised numerous Chicago Metro History Fair contestants on creating successful documentary projects.

Cyndi Moran is Professor of Communication, Media, and Theatre at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. Cyndi teaches a variety of media production courses including Introduction to Video Production, Advanced Video Production, and Digital Video Editing, as well as cinema studies courses such as Documentary Film and The Art of Film and Video. Her documentary work has been seen on the PBS series P.O.V. and in numerous national and international festivals. She has produced TV segments for WTTW and The Sundance Channel, and she has edited independent documentary productions, television shows, commercials, and programs for artists and not-for-profits.

This year kickoff is completely virtual and will feature Skyla Hearn, Manager of Archives for Cook County, as the keynote speaker.
Teachers that attend will be able to join two breakout room information sessions and will receive digital resources from our partner organizations.

The breakout sessions include:

Option 1: ’63 Boycott with MediaBurn/Kartemquin

Content experts from MediaBurn and Kartemquin provide a walkthrough of the curriculum guide and research materials available in connection to the recently-released documentary on the 1963 Chicago Schools Boycott. An excellent resource for projects and a great classroom intro on connecting history with the present.

Option 2: CHM Research Center with Ellen Keith

The Chicago History Museum’s Research Center is a popular research destination for student historians. Learn about what the Research Center can offer to your students this year!

Option 3: Oral Histories with Peter Alter

Join Peter Alter, Director of the Studs Terkel Center for Oral History, to explore how students can conduct their own oral history interviews as well as make use of existing recordings and transcripts from the Studs Terkel Center and other repositories.

Option 4: Research with NEIU Librarian(s)

Northeastern Illinois Librarian(s) Ed Remus and Chrissy Cogswell will provide an overview of the resource appointment process and other resources they have made for CMHF this year!
