Check out this awesome work from a Chicagoland student!

Layla Ashley and her teacher, Mrs. Catherine Clark, from Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, spent the past year researching Corporal Elmer John Elsey for the Sacrifice for Freedom®: World War II in the Pacific Student and Teacher Institute. They represent Chicago Metro History Fair and Illinois History Day.

Today we celebrate Corporal Elmer John Elsey’s birthday.

Elsey, a Chicago native, was born to Nora and Elmer Francis Elsey. Elmer Elsey served as an engineer in World War I.

He lived with his parents and three younger siblings and worked for the Pullman Standard Car and Manufacturing Company as a construction draftsman.

Elsey joined the U.S. Marine Corps on January 6, 1942. After his training, he served with the Marine Fighter Squadron 112. The squadron was stationed on Henderson Field on Guadalcanal and Espiritu Santo, off Australia’s northeastern coast.

On the morning of February 23, 1943, the Japanese attacked Guadalcanal. The men sprang from their tents into the foxholes. Elsey was killed during the bombing when flying debris struck him in the back of the head. Though the medics attended to him almost immediately, he never regained consciousness. He died en route to the hospital.

Corporal Elmer John Elsey is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Layla will eulogize Corporal Elsey this summer as part of the Sacrifice for Freedom program.

This research includes sources from the US National Archives and the Pullman State Historic Site.

Special thank you to our generous sponsors, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, @PacificFleetSubmarineMuseum, Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pacific Historic Parks - USS Arizona Memorial.

Thank you to the National Museum of the Marine Corps and NMMC Kids for their support of NHD's Silent Hero Program®.
