8AM Recording Studio! Show Space! Tess!

8AM is our home. We, Shanna and Matt, bought a big old place in Logan Square. The basement was quickly turned into a recording studio. It's recorded a bunch of pretty great bands and people so far...like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6JeY0jViBU. The attic has been turned into a show space for music and art. The space holds 60-75 people and focuses on acoustic shows. The goal of the space is to provide resources and support to friends new and old. We're incredibly fortunate to have found this place and will do everything we can to use it to support as many people's creative efforts as possible. Come over and let Tess sit on your lap.

We were planning on releasing this new EP, Undefeated Volume II, right about now before the handful of shows I had planned out west. We're finishing up the EP, with everyone recording their parts remotely. Here's a song from it called "Without a War". It was written back in January when it looked like we were about to go to war with Iran. A couple of months later, it's taken new meaning.

We'll be donating all of the proceeds from this song and EP to those in need, with some of it going to the staff of music venues in Chicago.

The rest of the EP should be available in a few weeks. And once we're able to, we're going to take these songs on the road.

You can stream/download "Without a War" here: https://thegunshy.bandcamp.com/track/without-a-war

I'll dance at every wedding
With or without a few drinks
I'll listen while my uncle tells me
Everything he things
I'll volunteer at least
A couple times a week
I won't leave my dirty dishes
In the sink
Or complain when my back,
Neck or legs feel sore
If we get through this year without a war

If we get through this year without a war
I'll shop only at local, independent stores
I'll run marathons
And walk for every kind of cure
If we get through this year without a war

I'll run for local office
Or at least know the people who
Care about the living
More than the price of crude
I'll hike every mountain
From sea to shining sea
I'll bike everywhere
I need to be
I'll ask myself what all of
The anxiety was for
If we get through this year without a war

If we get through this year without a war
I'll sleep on a thousand more stranger's floors
And know exactly what it is
That I am touring for
If we get through this year without a war

Undertow Shows — Chicago, IL - November 3 @ 8pm

Will Johnson has been one of my favorite songwriters and singers for over a decade. I've always loved Centro-matic, but Will's quieter material is extra special to me. The first South San Gabriel record really kicked my ass when it came out in 2000. I listened to it exclusively for a while. It had a huge influence on my early songwriting and Will's songs continue to be regular go-tos.

I'm really excited to be hosting Will when he comes through Chicago on a living room tour on Sunday, November 3. Join us if you're able. It'll be a really great night. You can grab tickets at the link below.

Here is song #12 for the Undefeated series, which completes year one of what I'd hoped would be a 5-6 song series. The original intention was to release a song a month for free "as long as they're needed". Use our art to offer support to those affected by the new president.

Five months ago my wife and I welcomed our first child into this world. A beautiful baby girl named Clara. From what I've been told, it's common for parents to become very protective after their first child is born. I have a lot of anxiety anyway. That combined with this new, beautiful responsibility and news popping up about nuclear war has resulted in a rough few months. I've become obsessed with worry. I've had issues with OCD in the past and this has felt like that, though I am aware of it and trying to do things to curtail it. Things like minimizing the use of news apps, leaving the house more often, and talking about it.

Last Sunday, my wife took our daughter out to her parent's place in Shabbona. That's when I wrote and recorded this song. Digging through some of our political history was therapeutic and depressing. But at the end of the day I had a new call to arms for myself. A reminder that you can be swallowed by demons or you can address them, know that they are there, and do everything you can to have a beautiful like despite them.

While I hope my songs are able to help others, I know for a fact that writing them has helped me. This one in particular.

Thanks for listening. Undefeated Year Two is coming soon. Please Vote.

“Election Day”

It was good to be alive in 1989
I was barely ten years old, I played basketball each night
We had George Bush the first, but weren’t talking abut war
The government was poor, the economy would dive
But it was still good to be alive in 1989

There can be no story
Somebody else writes
That defines or determines my life

It was good to be alive in 1999
A twenty year old kid drinking beer every night
They say the president lied when he cheated on his wife
We refused to give up nukes, let our history die
It was still good to be alive in 1999

There can be no story
Somebody else writes
That defines or determines my life

It was good to be alive in 2017
I earned another name, I sang for her some things
I saw the stars and stripes willfully divide
At the scream of lonely leaders all to eager to compete
It was still good to be alive in 2017

Hope for those who don’t
Love for those who won’t
Trump hate that has no place
Trump fear forced in your face
Die at 95
With your daughter and wife
At your side

For there can be no story
Somebody else writes
That defines or determines their lives

My new solo record is out today. My six week old baby girl is sleeping in my left arm as I type this with my right one. She's already growing like crazy, making funny eyes at Tess and snuggling up tight when she's sleepy. I hope she grows up in a kind and open-minded world, but it can be tough to be confident in that these days. May this record help her to hope for the best, deal with the worst and maybe smile a bit.

You can stream it wherever you'd like as of today (Bandcamp and Spotify links below). CDs are in and will ship next week. Thanks to Sean Bonnette for making the record something I'm really proud of, and to TW Walsh for making it sound nice.

If you're in Chicago, come party with me, Clara and her mom tomorrow. The link to that is below too.

Love,
Matt

The title track for my solo record, "Daddy Was a Sick-Hearted Singer" was the first song I wrote for it. I wrote it last December and it was the motivation for the rest of the songs. A month ago, my wife Shanna went through hell to bring our baby girl into the world. It was a scary and intense few days. She is stronger, smarter and better than me in every way and I'm really glad she's still here.

The Bad Copy has a stream of the song "Daddy Was a Sick-Hearted Singer". Check it out at the link below if you'd like. Thanks to them for the attention.

Once me and Shanna's relationship started to get serious we would joke about having kids one day. I have asthma and Shanna's teeth were always having problems. We would say that if we have kids hopefully they would have Shanna's lungs and my teeth.

This song came to me pretty quickly. All the words are true. The verses explain some pretty cool times in our life together. I knew I wanted it to be a duet, but was afraid to ask Shanna to sing it. The only other time she's been on one of my albums she played flute on the first song on 'Souls'. I made her cry I stressed her out so much.

I played her the demo a few months ago and asked her if she'd sing it with me. She agreed. I put the demo of the song on her iPod and she listened to it all the time. When it came time to record the version that's on the record she sang it like a pro. The only tears were happy tears this time. I think having the good vibes of Sean around helped.

I borrowed Ryan's camera and shot the footage for this video back in March when we were in California. I took the photo that's on the cover of the record on the same day.

I really do hope Clara likes The Weakerthans though.

Happy Independence Day. Here is our eighth song for the Undefeated project. Colin wrote and sang this one. It’s available for free at http://undefeated.thegunshy.com or on Bandcamp. Please help those who need it if you can.

"No Color Anymore"

Flying high above a schoolyard
A cotton cloth raised for a call
Tiny eyes are filled with the sky
And their hands cover their hearts

I wonder what'd be like
To be so innocent
Pledging to a nation
Run by greed and lead by sin

Cause I see stars and bars
They've got no color anymore
No color anymore

Burning brightly in a street where
We'll stop to take a stand
So hold stead fast with your sisters
And take your brothers hand

Cause I see stars and bars
They've got no color anymore
No color anymore

Cause I see stars and bars
They've got no color anymore

Clara June Arbogast. Born 06/16/17 at 11:47 am.

My Dear Daughter,

When your mom and I found out you were coming we were really excited. I was scared to death too, so I started doing the thing that helps me keep my head screwed on. I started writing songs. In a couple of months I had a whole album of songs about things that might be hard to talk to you about later.

A few friends helped me record them soon before you were born. Mom even helped me sing one of them. And Tess made it on here too.

I hope this record helps you understand why I sneak off into the basement some nights and why I leave you and mom at home for a couple weeks at a time. These rough, weird songs brought me to Chicago, brought me to your mom and now bring me to you. Whenever I try to give up on them I turn into a sad jerk. I don't want to be a sad jerk.

You don't have to like them. You don't have to listen to them often. I just wanted to make sure you have something to remember me by when you're traveling the world, living far away or I'm not here to tell you how much I love you anymore.

Now let's go take Tess for a walk.

Love,
Dad

This isn't at 8AM, but most of the people playing have played our place.

Next Sunday I'll be trying out a bunch of songs that will be recorded soon for a record under my own name. I get stressed when I try to play one new song in a set, let alone a whole set of new songs. I can't promise it won't be a train wreck, but everyone else playing is good.

Here's song #3 from our Undefeated project. It's called "Monolith" and was written and sung by Ryan. It's the first song by The Gunshy that Matt didn't write and sing. Let us constantly be ambitious in our attempts to do good. Let us not be distracted by those with selfish agendas. We got this.

http://undefeated.thegunshy.com

A needle in hay, a word to a god
Who never seemed to listen unless we were doing wrong
In the eyes of his messengers, decent & pure
Who sold us salvation with a four letter word

Now all my fear is truth, so be warned

I know color & value, and sift through the loam
For purity & spectacle, and cast off the stones
Of my nation, my anger, and all of my wealth
Through the eye of a needle in the deserts of hell

Because all my children need a place to dwell

From Niña to Santa María
The medicine takes some time to leave you
Bathe in the light
The light of our kingdom
And watch these walls
Secure our freedom

The leaves on the tree mean nothing to me
The roots & the branches are all i need
Give me the name of a martyr, the trust of my flock
The stripes of my flag folded up in a box
For the reach of my empire, noble & broad
Cut from the cloth by the teeth of a god

Who says all my precious blood could not be wrong
And all my heed my word, it won't be long

I am the mason, the mortar, the bricks & the mud
The sheep of my master swept away in the flood
I am a wall, a monolith, a line in the sand
With the belt of the Bible pulled tight between my hand

- Matt, Andy and Ryan

No god, no bastard
Can force a fence around my home
No boss, no pastor
Can turn a heart into a stone

On Friday I was sure of everyone
Dancing at the bar to some sing along songs
We laughed and shared a shot while the band played on
Hopeful and assured of the days and the years to come

No god, no bastard
Can force a fence around my home
No boss, no pastor
Can turn a heart into a stone

You forced a couple words between the tears
Talked of disappointment and all these newfound fears
I said, "let it overcome you for a day or two,
Then use your desperation to improve, not succumb to."

No god, no bastard
Can force a fence around my home
No boss, no pastor
Can turn a heart into a stone

It didn't take a president with darker skin than mine
For me to give a sh*t about other people's lives
That ain't gonna change, that's never gonna change
This land is your land, this land is mine
