Eastland Disaster Historical Society
Today was another day of progress in the next chapter of EDHS: We made a gift of a small portion of the artifacts in the Eastland Disaster collection to our friends at the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. Shown is board member Jim Ziegler reviewing and accepting the gift on behalf of the Fire Museum.
The photos in the gift all depict the heroic personnel (and fire boats) of the Chicago Fire Department responding to the unprecedented tragedy on July 24, 1915. Notable among the artifacts are three items that were originally presented to Frank H. Tinney (see photo), a patrolman with the Chicago Fire Insurance Patrol. The three items all relate to the Cook County Coroner's Star that was awarded to Patrolman Tinney for his valued services rendered to the coroner during the aftermath of the Eastland Disaster.
EDHS has worked with the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago for two decades and has always had a very meaningful, mutual relationship with them. Their museum and organization clearly are the "best of the best" to be the long-term stewards of this portion of the collection for generations to come.
It was another beautiful day on the South Side, Sunday March 12th. Engine 10 made the short trip down Western for the Annual Southside Irish Parade. The Temperature was a little cold, but the Sun and the wonderful patrons made it worth the trip. The Crew consisted of Board Members Jack Connors (Ret. CFD) Andy O'Donnell (Ret. CFD) Phil Little (President of FMGC) and Tim Connors (CFD E63).

I am excited to announce our new book will soon be here..Eric Haak and I are publishing a new photo book "Chicago Fire Department Engine Companies A Pictorial Review". This volume features a full page color image of each currently in service engine company working at a fire scene. It was a lot of fun to do and will make for an enjoyable read. Here is a link to get a sample view of a portion of the book:
The book will available for purchase at the annual Chicago muster on June 15..It is being sold exclusively by the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago and all profits will go directly to this fine organization. The price is 40.00. The book is only available for purchase from the museum at the muster as it is still at the printer. After the muster day it will be available mail order for those out of the area or unable to attend. When the book is fully in stock I will provide ordering information.
Please consider a purchase as I am sure you will enjoy it and at the very least you are helping preserve fire service history by supporting the museum..it's a win win scenario :)

I just got my copy of Chicago Badges of Extinction from Frank McMenamin. Frank is a former board member at the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago and a retired Chicago Firefighter. He has an extensive collections of badges and has just published this definitive encyclopedia of Chicago badges. It is full of color photographs and historical information. This is THE guide for any Chicago Fire Department collector. And Father's day is just around the corner.

Bittersweet morning as the Chicago Fireboat left the pier with her new owners today. The boat was not part of the museum, but previous owners Rick & Angel are a part of our museum family. We wish the boat's new owners, Ray & Erich fair winds and following seas. These two Navy vets have big plans not just for Chicago based tours, but to work with veterans groups, firefighters, and the Chicago Fire Museum.
I'll be there, who will be joining me?
Thank you to everyone that purchased Steve Redick's Snorkel book. We have officially sold our last copy. If you would still like a copy here is the link to Blurb.
