In her current exhibition at Addington Gallery, Cat L Crotchett really throws down her gauntlet as a painter to be reckoned with! Each painting alone is a technical tour de force, but taken together, this show is a huge statement about both herself and our shared time. Not only is Cat pushing the envelope of a specific encaustic technique she pretty much invented anyway, but she is pouring meaning and emotion into these layered panels until they nearly start to vibrate and sing on their own. Art talk hyperbole? You won't think so when you come and see the show in person. :-) It's up for nearly 2 months... that's plenty of time to figure out your travel plans.

Installation shots of our current exhibition: "Paula Blackwell: Out of the Blue" - Paula Blackwell is an American artist currently painting in a rural area near Portland Oregon. A practitioner of the ancient technique of encaustic (beeswax and pigment), Paula Blackwell has developed a strong reputation as a painter deftly able to evoke emotion through her deeply expressive, evocatively atmospheric works that exist in a balanced state between realism and process-oriented expressionism. Her recent and ongoing series of small, intimate, moody works exhibit a beautiful sense of depth, subtle shifts of light, and atmospheric translucent surfaces.

After living 20 years in a great collection, this beautiful little 5x5 Amanda Crandall painting was in need of some care. It had recently become damaged in a move. The painting is encaustic and oil. This little gem has now been restored to its original beauty, and will continue to bring happiness to that household for years to come. Addington Gallery offers conservation services for many types of painting. From simple cleaning to full-on aesthetic trauma, we can help. And if we can't, we'll immediately put you in touch with someone who can. We want your artwork to live a long and healthy life!

I'm leading the River North Gallery tour tomorrow, and we will be starting at Addington Gallery and Joanne Mattera's exhibition of encaustic paintings. This show is all about the intricacies of color relationships, and the way Mattera developed and "tunes up" each painting is a striking thing to behold. A viewer yesterday commented on the brail-like textures on each panel... how the horizontal lines are like lines of a language with meaning embedded in the textures. I was like , " whoa... yeah... and I'm using that!". So, join us tomorrow at 11am at Fabcakes 714 n Wells, and get the back-room scoop as we visit 3 galleries in the hood.Ri

There are a few weeks left to take a good long look at this beautiful exhibition of new work by Joanne Mattera. This is a striking show full of ambitious paintings. Small or large, they say important things about color, geometry, natural phenomenon, and engaging the space around us. I love to watch people look at the whole show in totality, then move in for an intimate viewing of each piece. Over and over they say things like, "It's a whole new painting when you get closer!" "A whole new aspect of the painting opens up when you move in!" etc. Stop by soon if you are in the area!

Exploring New Pathways to Selling Your Art

Artists - How has the current pandemic and, as Madison Avenue refers to them, "These Uncertain Times" affected how you MAKE, SELL, and THINK about art? There's a lot we need to talk about and reevaluate, and it's good to do these things in community in a creative way. That's why I'm inviting you to join me and art advisor Susan Blackman (of Art Advisory LTD) for what will surely be a memorable Sunday afternoon as we explore the Doug DeWitt outdoor earth-art compound, and participate in a SPECIAL end of Summer Seminar! We will be outdoors in a restored prairie installation - socially distanced, masked, feeling the breeze against our faces, smelling the native plants and flowers. We will be clearing out the cobwebs of concern, fear, frustration and anxiety, and trading them in for creativity, ingenuity, vision, and fresh air! I'm so excited to do this! But time is tight - it's coming up on Sunday the 13th near Mundeline, and you gotta reserve a space! 25 spots, 25 bucks! So, here's the scoop:

This is going to be an experience unlike any other - we will address the current art marketplace situation in an inspiring environment. This will be a unique, once only event. -- On Sunday, September 13 from 1-3 pm, Susan Blackman and Dan Addington will be conducting a unique Outdoor Seminar focusing on new strategies for marketing your art in these times. This Seminar will be outdoors, socially distanced, and safely conducted. We will be gathering for this seminar at artist Doug Dewitt’s 2.5 acre outdoor prairie installation and sculpture area. The Seminar will include a viewing of outdoor artworks, and a physical exploration of Dewitt’s ongoing earth-art project “This is Not a Garden”, a restored prairie area with a wandering path. Blackman and Addington will present a discussion of creative ways to address the showing and selling of art during shutdowns, the pandemic, and beyond. Our challenging times will be met with creativity, information, and innovation! This fresh air gathering symbolizes this creative and positive approach!
This seminar will be held in Mundelein IL. (30 miles from Rogers Park in Chicago). Individually packaged food and bottled water will be provided. We will wear masks, stay socially distant, and sanitize upon entering the grounds. Please bring your own chair. (lawn chair, camping chair, folding chair etc.) 25 participants, 25 dollars. You may contact Susan Blackman at Art Advisory LTD 773.671.8624 (text or phone) or Addington Gallery by text or phone - 312.664.3406 for more information. Tickets obtained through Eventbrite - please follow the link below to secure your place... https://www.eventbrite.com/e/119157937599

We're coming up on the home stretch of our newly re-installed Kathleen Waterloo Solo Exhibition. It started in March, just before the shelter in home order. Paintings were sold, walls were painted, and new work arrived in June, just in time to re-open the new show in July. It's up now, but for just a few more weeks. We encourage you to come check it out while you can!

ADDINGTON GALLERY IS OPEN!

Beginning Friday, June 19th, Addington Gallery is open!
In the main space, the gallery celebrates Chicago artist Kathleen Waterloo with a dynamic selection of vibrant and exciting new encaustic work. These works demonstrate how in the right hands, an ancient medium can speak with skill about organization, structure, freedom, and autonomy.

The gallery front space features gallery and invited artists who are sharing work created during their "shelter at home". Titled "Doors Open", the show speaks to not only the physical reality of businesses reopening under new conditions, but about artists throwing open the doors of their studios and by extension their imaginations to share with viewers. Most works in the exhibition are priced under $1000, and guaranteed to bring new life and meaning to any viewer's living space.

The gallery is committed to providing a safe, enjoyable, friendly and contemplative art viewing experience. Mandated standards for social distancing and mask-wear are observed, with hand sanitizer and masks available throughout the viewing space.

In addition to the physical show on view, A virtual exhibition of affordable small works, "Sharing Shelter" is on view at the gallery website: http://www.addingtongallery.com

Sharing Shelter: Small Works

I'm really excited to announce that Addington Gallery's new on-line exhibition, "Sharing Shelter" is live, and what an amazing collection of small affordable works it is! I know, affordable is a relative term, especially now, but it's worth noting that the prices in this show are set well below what the typical prices would be...JUST for this exhibition. The show is 2 months in the making, and most of the work was made specifically for this show and these times. Each sale encourages an artist. Each piece you bring into your life changes your environment (and we ALL need that!) and offers up new meaning. And, each sale contributes to Care for Real, helping those in need of food and clothing in Chicago. Exhibiting artists include: Allison B. Cooke, Joanne Mattera, Lisa Pressman, Susan Kraut, Brooks Anderson, Jeff Hirst, Helen Dannelly, Kathleen Waterloo, Susan Hall, Julia Spencer Katz, Joan Holleb, Carl A. Linstrum, Scott French, Sandra Dawson, Jill McGannon, Patrick Mcgannon, Paula Blackwell, Diana Cutrone

Recently, like me, you may have become aware of the fact that you are looking at the same walls in your living space more than ever before. In this time of sheltering in place, we all share the need for the presence of meaningful art to bring new moments of life and meaning to our environment. We of...

If you are a) interested in art, and b) in the Chicago area this weekend, I have TWO suggestions for you. 1.) KATHLEEN WATERLOO "20/20Fusion" opens TONIGHT, Friday, from 5-8pm. at Addington Gallery. This is part of the River North Evening Gallery Walk which takes place every two months. This is an important show by a significant and exciting Chicago artist. Kathleen is a leading force in the practice of encaustic painting in America, and in the past year her work has been placed in more collections around the country than ever before. This show features paintings that are classic Waterloo, while revealing new directions in her work. There are A LOT of good reasons to see this particular show! 2.) I am leading the River North Gallery Tour this Saturday Morning, and we will be visiting 4 exciting new exhibitions from some of the leading galleries in Chicago. That tour meets at Fabcakes, 714 N Wells at 11AM Saturday Morning, and it's free! Pictured is "Slink II", 18x18, encaustic on Panel. Come to tonight's opening and hear the story behind the title!
