In celebration of Black History Month we're highlighting groundbreaking moments in science, sports, fashion, entertainment, education and beyond. There are plenty of firsts, little-known facts and milestones that deserve recognition. I hope these #blackfacts inspire you to research these trailblazers and the many others who we owe so much.
In 1990, Carole Anne-Marie Gist became the first African- American woman to win the Miss USA title. Gist first won the title of Miss Michigan and went on to win the Miss USA crown on March 2, 1990. 20 year old Gist, a 5 ft 11in Detroit native, went on to become first runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant that same year.

Rosa Parks wasn’t the first person to refuse to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. On March 2, 1955, 15 year old Claudette Colvin refused to move to the back of the bus, nine months before Rosa Parks took her historic stand which launched the Montgomery bus boycott.
Colvin was arrested and jailed for her actions, and ultimately sentenced to probation. But that was not the end of her civil rights fight.
Colvin was also one of four women who challenged the segregation law in court. She was a plaintiff in the landmark legal case Browder v. Gayle which overturned bus segregation laws in Montgomery.
Ms. Colvin, we thank you for taking a stand against injustice and inequality.

Here is today's black history fact: Zelda Wynn Valdes was an African-American fashion designer and costumer. In 1948, she became the first African American to open her own shop on Broadway in New York City. She dressed many stars including Dorothy Dandridge, Josephine Baker and Gladys Knight. In the 1950’s Hugh Hefner commissioned Valdes to design the first Playboy Bunny costumes. She was also the New York chapter president of the National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designer (NAFAD), a coalition of black designers which was founded by Mary McLeod Bethune. Hats off to this iconic lady of style!

Marlon Green was an African-American pilot whose landmark 1963 Supreme Court decision helped dismantle racial discrimination in the American passenger airline industry. The following year David Harris was hired as the first African-American pilot for a major airline. Green was subsequently hired by Continental Airlines. He flew for Continental from 1965 to 1978.
Capt. Green died in 2009 at the age of 80. Capt. Green, we salute you!

It's Black History Month. Athough we celebrate our history and accomplishments every day, I thought this would be a good time to remember some of the trailblazers who paved the way for us.
Today we celebrate Ruth Simmons, the first African-American President of an Ivy League institution. She was elected president of Brown University in 2001. Simmons earned her PhD from Harvard and has been awarded more than 20 honorary doctorates including one from my Ivy League alma mater University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Simmons, we salute you! #blackfacts

Kwanzaa day 7. The principle is Imani/ faith. “Faith is the substance and spirit which makes tired hearts refreshed and dead hopes stir with the nearness of life; faith is the promise of tomorrow at the close of every day , the triumph of life in the defiance of death, and the assurance that love is sturdier than hate, right is more confident than wrong, that good is more permanent than evil."
– Howard Thurman
