Chicago Community Showcase

Chicago Community Showcase Curated by Sally Duros, Chicago Community Showcase provides information about neighborhoods in Chicago.
Chicago Community Showcase connects visitors with the exciting futures of Chicago’s neighborhoods. Whether an ethnic eatery, a local landmark building, an historic site or a place where the future is being planned and birthed, our destinations have been selected through the collective wisdom of the community that values, preserves and creates them.

Chicago Community Showcase started four years ago with a multimedia project by community leaders. Follow us on Twitter @ChiNeighbors NEW! Mobile Neighborhood Tours created by community leaders. http://tours.lisc-chicago.org/

Mission: We showcase thriving neighborhoods!

Historically, LGBTQ+ communities are undercounted and underrepresented.

Let's change that with the #2020Census! Our families and communities deserve it.

Hello Followers of Chicago Community Showcase and ChiNeighbors Twitter feed. I began this page and Twitter feed around 2010 as a free community service and an experiment in using Facebook and Twitter to deliver information to news deserts in the neighborhoods of Chicago. At the time, there was much skepticism. The information delivered through these social streams was carefully curated from information shared by community-based organizations on their Websites mostly. Very few organizations were using social media at the time I began the feed. I developed a primitive app that would automatically post on Facebook and deliver that information to my ChiNeighbors Twitter feed. The Facebook feed was automatic and the Twitter feed was also automatic, fed by RSS, but both were carefully curated daily by me as a free public service. Two years ago, I had to turn my attention toward family matters. Of course, social media continued to evolve and without my attention to them the Chicago Community Showcase page and ChiNeighbors Twitter feed fell into dormancy. It will take a while to decide what to do with these feeds in the future. If you have any thoughts please let me know. Thank you for your time. All the best.

At RootWork Gallery tonight

Join Rootwork Gallery tonight. This exhibit is inspired by the writings of Bessie Smith, jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, the activism of Sandra Bland and Mamie Till, and the increasing disappearances of Black women and girls around the world. Kimberly L. Harmon and Tracie D. Hall offer both a testimony to the redemptive capacity of Black women’s physical, emotional, and spiritual labor and a call for reciprocity.

After the Spill, learn about pipelines in the midwest. 8.7.18 6:30

Join us for a free One Earth Film Festival screening and discussion of the film After the Spill.

When the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig exploded, it spilled more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico in the worst ecologic disaster in North American history. Now, activist and filmmaker Jon Bowermaster takes stock and asks hard questions: What is the current health of the Gulf and its marine life? How sick are the fish, and how sick are the people? How has the oil industry changed since the spill … and how have we changed?

Did you know dozens of pipelines snake through the Midwest? Many of them are aging, potentially posing a catastrophic threat to the Great Lakes and the people and wildlife that depend on them. Learn the facts from Bill Latka of Oil and Water Don't Mix, Nathaniel Miller of Audubon Great Lakes and Matt Edgington of Patagonia Chicago. Leave with action ideas for protecting our lakes and wildlife. Facilitator: Samantha Sainsbury of Institute of Cultural Affairs.

Doors open 30 minutes before start time. Arrive early to avoid lines and get best seats. Refreshments available.

Tickets are free, with $7 suggested donation. Ensure your seat! Reserve tickets at https://spillcultural.eventbrite.com

The One Earth Film Festival runs March 2-11. See our website for films, trailers and schedule information for more than 30 films in 50 locations throughout Chicagoland. www.oneearthfilmfest.org.

Keep the Internet open #netneutrality

House Bill 4819, the Broadband Procurement and Disclosure Act, was filed by lead sponsor Ann M. Williams - State Representative and is designed to ensure net neutrality across Illinois. This became necessary after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to dismantle net neutrality this past December, which opens the door for ISPs to control the content their customers access on the Internet, how fast they access that content, and how much customers have to pay to access certain types of content. Social networks contribute to segregation.

New research suggests that the many ways in which an individual’s daily life—their social networks, the neighborhoods they live and work in and travel through, etc.—might serve to perpetuate segregation. #CostOfSegregation #CycleOfSegregation
