ALTour UIC

ALTour UIC ALTour UIC is a campus-based tour and source of lesser known, as well as under-represented, organizing histories the University of Illinois at Chicago.

ALTour UIC, spearheaded by the MUSE program, is currently investigating important, yet by and large under exposed histories of student organizing on the UIC campus. We are going to be offering guided and unguided tours of these spaces that we walk by and engage with every day in order to shed some new light on the oftentimes complicated histories of the grounds of UIC.

Hope you enjoy!

Here's the group listening in to Lena, Mariam and Sandy on our practice run for the weekend.

The story being told here was of the Disabled Student Union's protest against the Supreme Court's ruling in the Garrett v. University of Alabama case. The outcomes here greatly stifled the Americans with Disabilities Act and made it impossible for state employees with disabilities to sue for damages if they were discriminated against.

While protesting, many outside accomplices came in support of the cause and made this event an extremely diverse and effective rally.

You can find out more about this protest and others starting this Saturday at 2:00 pm! Hope to see you there!

Paul Durica of Pocket Guide to Hell paid us a visit yesterday to share some of his experiences researching, writing, and performing historical walking tours, talks, and reenactments around Chicago. Hearing what works, what doesn't, and what engages and activates audience participants was immensely helpful as we begin to write and implement the tour content. Per his advice, we should: make the tour accessible to a wide audience, engage in activities throughout our tour, use history to bring unlikely collaborators together, and above all remember that history belongs to everyone. Big thank you to Tori for bringing Paul in 👏 !!
