So many were interested in seeing where John and Matilda Vanderpoel were born in the village of Rijsoord in Holland, we thought we would share photographs of the farm and hotel as they appear today. Once again, thank you to the Rijsoord Artist Colony Research Group for sharing this information and photographs with us.
Burghaeve Farm, birthplace of John H. Vanderpoel's parents, and also John, Matilda and their eight siblings, located in the village of Rijsoord, Holland. The structure served as the family home and barn all under one roof, which was very common at that time. Although John's father brought the family to America in 1868 after the death of their mother, the farm remained in the Vanderpoel family until about 1975.
The second photograph is of the Hotel Warendrop about 100 yards away from the farm. John and Matilda Vanderpoel encouraged American artists to stop in Rijsoord when in Europe and an artist colony sprung up there. This hotel is where the artists would stay.
Thank you to the research group studying the Artist Colony of Rijsoord for sharing this information and these wonderful photographs.
