Today did not start the way that we wanted it to—Due to some tech issues, we sadly had to reshoot a lot of claymations. However, we persevered regardless, and made new claymations in addition to documenting our cut-paper animations as well! Everyone worked hard on making up for the time lost by figuring out ways to make their animations even faster than before.

Middle School Program: Comics and Graphic Novels; November 9, 2019

Today was an exciting day!!! We worked on our autobiographical comics. Alex explained many ways that we could create autobiographical comics. These comics can be lifelike, cartoons, highly focused on a subject matter, or of many subjects. The possibilities are endless as long as it focuses on ourselves or our lives. These comics will actually resemble a comic book instead of a comic strip. [ 26 more words ]

Middle School Program: Fashion Studio; October 19, 2019

Today in MSP Fashion, we learned how to create garments by draping on the dress form! We experimented with three different types of materials: muslin, jersey, and stabilizer, to achieve different effects on our draping! We got to play around and experiment with all sorts of shapes and silhouettes before we practiced our hand stitching to hold it all together to take it off of the dress forms. We’re super excited to keep developing these ideas next week!

Middle School Program: Drawing Studio; October 19, 2019

After free drawing at the beginning of our class we talked about Impressionism. We viewed photos of art by Van Gogh and Monet. We saw how some of their paintings were highly saturated with color covering the canvas and other paintings were muted or subdued. We learned about mark making and how they can make our drawings interesting. These mark making techniques that the Impressionists used inspired the marks we applied to our pieces using oil pastels on paper. Some students created landscapes, spacescapes, the four seasons, and surreal worlds with pink trees.

Middle School Program: Painting Studio; October 19, 2019

Today we really committed ourselves to the studio. We had a lesson in two point perspective, and looked at various artists in history that used perspective to illustrate space and structures. We discussed the importance of drawing and planning a painting to bring realness to something invented. Then we experimented with our watercolors and different compositions. It was great to watch everyone tackle a new medium and begin thinking about painting and drawing in a critical way.

Middle School Program: Comics and Graphic Novels; Saturday October 19, 2019

Today we had a mini critique of our paper cut out figures. We learned about constructive criticism and how we all can work together to help us all improve our characters. After snack we worked on plot developments and where story ideas come from. Some ideas come from other comics, personal experiences, music, movies, observation, and so many more areas. We made little comics of our own where we drew on one panel of the page, passed on the page to the person next to us, and so on. We created collaborative comics that helped us develop our ideas with the help of our classmates.

Middle School Program: Fashion Studio; Sunday October 13, 2019

Today in MSP Fashion, we learned all about how to take our measurements and turn them into custom paper patterns to use to make our designs! We learned about all the different measurements we need to make a garment, and then made a custom cheat-sheet ruler with all our measurements on it. Then we began to explore pattern making, learning how our different measurements correspond with the shape of our pattern pieces! We’re excited to finish our patterns next week, and then move onto draping garments on the dressform!

Today we worked hard towards finishing the models that we plan on using to make our stop motion animations. We also finished watching Kubo and the Two Strings as well. We had a substitute teacher today, Scott Ramon, who presented the work of older stop motion animators, such as Ray Harrihausen and Tim Burton. Next week we will begin documenting our animations, and bringing our stories to life!

Brrrrrrr! Was it is cold this morning, but we are so very grateful that so many students made it to class. Today we learned about cabinets of curiosities and what objects we might collect. Some students collect ties, Japanese erasers, comics, and more! How exciting to learn new and interesting facts about each other. To spark our imaginations even more we took a field trip into the museum and saw the Joseph Cornell collection of shadow boxes located in the modern wing. [ 51 more words ]

This Saturday we pulled out the charcoal and got down to making art. We learned about values of lights to darks with this medium. These skills taught us how to perceive depth using the value system by creating highlights and shadows on objects. We did a few practice sketches of our still life set-up and then did an extended drawing after our afternoon snack. [ 42 more words ]

Today we worked with a full color palette! Everyone looked like they were feeling more comfortable in the studio and got started right away. Middle School Program: Comics and Graphic Novels; Sat October 5, 2019

This Saturday we learned all about all sorts of comics and styles. Some comics can be simple, complicated, abstract, realistic, and so on. Everything can be a comic. We presented our comic selfies that we worked on last week and this week for our classmates to view. We made our own little mini booklets that we were able to take with us on a field trip into the art museum. Our booklets were constructed as teeny tiny sketchbooks and were inspired by the shadowboxes of Joseph Cornell.

We took a trip to the Flaxman Library to look at some fashion books and make some copies of images for our mood boards before heading back to the classroom to get to work! Most impressed with the wide range of subjects the Art Institute of Chicago offers. Another interesting topic for the school board to consider would be a class for seniors to bring them up to date on the new skills and art forms which they aren't familiar with since its been years since most of us have been exposed to the at world except maybe the usual art fairs around the city and burbs and an occasional trip to The Art Institute. I would be glad to help promote it on my blog ( www.aginginplaceforseniors.wordpress.com ).
looking at a few courses this fall/winter. would love to see a contemporary collage class/workshop one day!
