You won't miss Maïmouna Guerresi's piece standing tall in our current exhibition, 'This We Believe.' Hybridity, in form and concept, is a hallmark of Guerresi's works, referencing and remixing gender, ethnicity, and religious beliefs.

'Moisa: Sospensione Mosaica,' 2009
Fiberglass and resin with white pigments

'Moisa' exists as a hybrid, a harmony between disparate identities and beliefs. The horns on the figure represent the manifestation of the spirit that gives regality, strength, and victory.

Art of the Week is back with a piece that’s best listened to. So, turn up the volume to hear “Star Spangled Banner'' played by a cello quartet. You might notice that it sounds sad as it accompanies Kota Ezawa’s National Anthem as a requiem or elegy.

Ezawa’s hand-painted watercolor images features players, coaches, trainers of the NFL after former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick began his practice of kneeling during the national anthem in response to the high incidence of police brutality targeting black men and boys in the U.S. Issues of race, state-sanctioned violence, and allegiance to the flag collide along and within the bodies and minds of those in the arena and beyond.

Unlike news reports on screen that highlight the tension and drama of these events, Ezawa mediates these scenes through his own, humanist perspective, one that aligns allegiance with freedom of thought and expression. “Growing up in a multinational, biracial family, I never developed a strong connection to patriotism,” the artist explains. “Yet, seeing the national anthem protests of NFL football players gave me an unexpected feeling of national pride for my adopted home, the USA.”

Pictured: Kota Ezawa, National Anthem, color video with sound, running time 1:38 minutes.

Today we are highlighting Titus Kaphar’s Ascension, a work in our inaugural exhibition that was previously shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

“I’ve come to realize that all reproduction, all depiction, is fiction—it’s simply a question of to what degree,” says Kaphar. (image: Titus Kaphar, 'Ascension', 2016. Oil and wax on canvas on brass nails.)

21c Museum's exhibition on display, 'This We Believe' explores the power and evolution of belief systems and how these ideologies influence our global culture and dichotomy.

The Spanish art collective, Democracia, explores social and political power structures in this thought-provoking series. A quote superimposed over a photograph of riot police in Madrid looks ver similar to an advertisement. Hear more about this work in the video above!

Kapwani Kiwanga's Nations series uses flags as an emblem of ideology and resistance. This piece, Nations Vertières, 1803, commemorates the role of Vodou as a galvanizing force in the Haitian Revolution. The imagery depicts Jean-Jacques Dessalines who was instrumental in leading the final, decisive battle that overthrew Napoleon Bonaparte's army and secured the nation's independence. Created in collaboration with Haitian craftspeople, Kiwanga’s Nations (Vertières) emphasizes the role of religion in political movements while paying homage to Haiti’s history.

Traditional Haitian Vodou flags are elaborately beaded and hand-stitched with symbols to represent a deity in the religion. How many beads do you think are on a typical Vodou flag?

When We Gather Film

This International Women’s Day, we are celebrating for the entire month of March by sharing the film, When We Gather, at 21c Chicago. Admission to the Museum is always free, just make an appointment through our link in bio. If you are unable to come in to see the work in person in, please check it out on the 21c YouTube channel!

Conceived by renowned artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons, in collaboration with LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs and Okwui Okpokwasili, When We Gather (2021) is a five minute film that celebrates the women who have played an elemental role in the progress of the United States and offers a call to create a path forward for the leaders of the future.

When We Gather was originally inspired by the election of the country’s first female vice president and performed during a pandemic by seven artists in separate studios and outdoor spaces in Brooklyn, Houston, Boston and Nashville then woven together by the film director Codie Elaine Oliver [Black Love, OWN].

My wife and I spent our wedding night at 21c in Louisville, in a suite and had an unforgettable experience. For our anniversary, we were hoping to recreate the magic by staying at 21c in Chicago. We have booked a room from 9/26-9/29. Our experience has been incredibly disappointing. We booked a room with a bath and were told we could only have a room with a roll-in shower. Water sprays everywhere and the relaxing experience is ruined. We had asked if we could exchange rooms to possibly a corner suite or at least one with a bathtub. We were told by the staff that due to covid 48 hour cleaning requirements, that would be impossible. That said, we just looked online and found corner rooms available. I was forced to pay full price on parking because the staff did not know the parking lot offered a pay-by-phone option which does not give you a parking ticket that can be validated. Staff doesn't seem to be coordinated or interested in helping. We would not come back.
