Please join us for an artist reception of Emma McKee: Championship Bulls Banner on August 25 from 6 to 7:30 PM in Gallery 3. Free & open to the public!
Invoking nostalgia, Emma McKee, a.k.a. The Stitch Gawd, reimagines the six-time Championship Chicago Bulls Banners using hand-sewn, stitch applique, and quilting techniques. As smoke billows from the nose of the Bulls head it encircles gold leather phrases culled from vintage Bulls T-shirts from the era. Too Big, Too Strong, Too Fast, Too Good, 1997 references “..the Derrick Rose era – a time, attitude and a work ethic reflective of the Dynasty 90’s Bulls. Also, a particularly important time for me – as Derrick Rose and the Bench Mob Bulls served as an introduction to the team and the city for me” states McKee. The Bulls head, custom quilted by Evanston Quilt Company’s Amy Parker, is a call back to a jacket made by McKee in 2020 for Bulls Point Guard Zach Lavine. Originally quilted in the interior of Lavine’s jacket, the Bulls head is an important through line for the artist’s work with the organization.

Sofie Muller // Clarysse, 2011
For Sofie Muller’s Clarysse, the schoolroom becomes a battlefield, where seated for eternity at her wooden desk, a student is rendered headless. Some external tragedy or interior conflict—the boredom, the shame, the struggle to succeed and conform that may attend those years in school—has erased her visage and her mind, leaving only an oval shadow burned into the desktop. Inspired by both science and religion, Muller explores the after-effects of disasters, both natural and man-made: here, the artist explores fire and the martyrdom of Catholic saints. Burning—to purify, to sanctify, to celebrate, to conquer—is a centuries-old ritual common among the world’s religions; the mysterious, metaphorical conflagration that has decapitated Clarysse transforms the child into a martyr for an unknown cause.

His ‘n Hers, 2015
Lucy Sparrow’s () His ‘n Hers consists of two bathroom cabinets filled with hand-stitched, felt replicas of common personal hygiene products. Separated by gender, the products reference the mundane, daily rituals of cohabitating humans, while critiquing a consumer culture that divides people based on biology. Highlighting the unique needs and desires of men and women, the artist subverts the viewer’s typical relationship with the products at hand, making light of the differences between the sexes within the home. Whether addressing what happens in the bathroom, or larger social concerns, the artist infuses childlike curiosity into her work, urging all to, “just stay fluffy and never grow up.”

Frances Goodman's 'Queen' (2021) is a 6.5' x 4.5' piece comprised of up to 80 different colors of hand-stitched sequins on canvas. Goodman captures her own images, then converts the image to a grid before stitching on the sequins one by one. Focusing on the female gaze, the images encourage the viewer to consider who the woman is and why she's there. "...a provocative, empowered, strong woman, who becomes grotesque in the world because she's so assertive and free." says Goodman. The sequins serve as a mirage, never truly holding the image in the same way. This dependency on light becomes a metaphor of the fleeting nature of idealism. We love seeing artists at work! Seen here is Stacey Lee Webber (@staceyleewebber) hand embroidering her infamous money pieces 💵. Making her official 21c debut, you can find her completed masterpiece as part of our Pop Stars! Exhibit. Swipe to see the final product ✨ 🖼: Stacey Lee Webber, Jackson Uncut Clown Town (2021) Hand-stitched uncut money sheet. “I remain just one thing, and one thing only - and that is a clown. It places me on a far higher plane than any politician." - Charlie Chaplin, 1960 Presidents and politicians are embedded in popular culture: their faces are memorialized in history books, on monuments, and on currency. The image of Andrew Jackson, the 7th U.S. President, on the “uncut” (uncirculated) $20 bill, is that of a dignified leader worthy of a new nation’s trust. Webber’s painstaking and playful embroidery renders him a clown, suggesting a reconsideration of our reverence for public figures, both historic and contemporary.

The #21cmuseumteam has been busy preparing for the opening reception of “Pop Stars!” as seen in this Timelapse of Brian Paumier’s Act of Faith, 2014. Join us for the opening reception on March 24, 6-8pm! RSVP here: bit.ly/PopStars-21c Brian Paumier (American) Act of Faith, 2014 Unique cuadros, archival pigment prints on panel with resin Brian Paumier held and faced a gun when he made the manda (“vow”) that inspired his multi-part Act of Faith, which he dedicates to the Virgin of Guadalupe. “Act of Faith starts with a promise that was made in the heat of battle in Iraq,” explains the artist, who served with U.S. forces, “I ask the Virgin of Guadalupe for her help and make a pledge: ‘If you get me out of this, I will make you a manda.’” Influenced by the religious and folkloric traditions of his native Mexican-American community in southern California, the work is a vibrant tableau of the public and the personal, the sacred and the profane, in which the arrangement—as an altar piece—is intended to chart Paumier’s embrace of faith and his “return to the rituals and flavors of my youth. By stretching nationalities and colliding symbols on a cross-cultural platform, I want to create a personal heritage that makes sense to others as well as myself.” #21cPopStars #21cArtist
