Learn how the origins of Trump’s proposed change to the public charge provision of US immigration law has deep roots in Massachusetts.

Terrific article citing IEHS historian Hidetaka Hirota's brilliant work to help explain the Trump administration's proposed changes to the legal immigration system that target working class immigrants and others who might temporarily receive government assistance. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/09/an-old-anti-irish-law-is-at-the-heart-of-trumps-plan-to-reshape-legal-immigration/

Mass. has a large Brazilian community, and economic problems combined with political turmoil have brought a large new wave of immigrants in recent years. They, too, are feeling the impact of Trump's aggressive enforcement policies.

A People's Guide to Greater Boston

The grim toll of Trump’s immigration policies in greater Boston.

"Saying goodbye at Logan Airport is a familiar, if painful, scene for the four Macario brothers. Just two years ago, they said goodbye to their father when he was deported back to his native Guatemala.
"And early Wednesday morning, the oldest brother, Isidro, faced the same fate."

From East Boston to the Lynn, Massachusetts, the Orwellian-named Department of Homeland Security breaks up families and communities.

On the eighth anniversary of the Haitian earthquake, President Trump’s disgraceful comments on Haitians and other immigrants from Africa and Central America reveal a profound ignorance about the history of US foreign policy in fueling immigration to our shores. In many cases, immigrants fled what Trump called “sh*thole countries” because of past US support for dictators who wrought violence and repression and economic programs that heightened poverty and inequality.

The President suggests that such immigrants and refugees are a burden on our country and must be expelled. Here in Boston, nothing could be further from the truth—indeed, immigrants have been instrumental to the revival of our economy and our neighborhoods.
