I just finished the rework of my graphite pencil drawing, "Dweller in the Cliffs".
This piece is meant to evoke an oncoming storm with rough seas. The fast-moving clouds and a dark, foreboding cliff contribute to the mood.
Moving to take shelter is an eagle, as it becomes a part of the shadowed rock edge.
This is a 16"x20" drawing in a dark grey, rough wood-grain frame.

Today I decided to pull out an older drawing that I've been wanting to rework and add some detail to.
Unlike my animal portraits, the main feature here is the drama from the rock face to the ocean. The Eagle becomes more a part of the shadowy cliffs.
I'm excited to see how the drawing turns out.

I just finished my latest woodland creature! The Great Horned Owl (or Tiger Owl) is also native to Coastal Virginia.
This art was designed to complement "Portrait of a Raccoon". Both make use of negative space and accentuate a small amount of color. There's no question that the focus of the picture is the animal itself. I was drawn to the amount of detail in the bird and liked both the delicate nature and patterning of the feathers.

My newest Woodland Creature is finished!
I loved creating this with graphite and just a touch of spot color.
It took a delicate touch to capture the softness of the raccoon's fur and inquisitive look in his face. It's been a while since I used this much negative space, focusing almost exclusively on the animal. I merely suggested the other shapes but feel a certain dimensionality to them.
Let me know if you enjoy the simpler background and spot of color.
