Kids Run Trains inspires the next generation by putting the throttle in kids’ hands.

Through hands-on fun, family connection, and Lionel model trains, we spark creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of trains. KRT is a model train club effort focused on introducing the hobby to families through interactive and hands-on exhibits. KRT will provide educational opportunities related to the hobby to groups such as the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, or Girl Scouts or through an after school enrichment program with Southeastern Elementary School in Chesapeake

Why KRT?
-Because running trains is fun!
-Promotes the growth of the hobby
-Reconnects adults with their childhood memories
-There is no group in Hampton Roads that specifically address kids

A crossing gate drops. A signal flashes. A little action scene comes to life. 🚦 Lionel operating accessories add surprises and movement beyond the locomotive itself. Which classic accessory would you love to see working again?

A bridge can carry a train over a river. A tunnel can send it straight through a mountain. Together they turn a simple loop into an adventure! 🌉 Which would you build first: a dramatic trestle or a winding mountain tunnel?

Who says festive trains are only for December? 🎄 A colorful holiday locomotive can bring smiles to a model railroad in any season. Do you run special holiday trains, or do you keep your favorite engines on the rails year-round?

Not every train carries passengers or freight for customers. Railroads rely on maintenance crews, cranes, and specialized equipment to keep the rails in shape. 🚧 Model work trains are a great way to discover the people who make railroading possible.

Time for a model railroad question!

You have an empty 4' × 8' table and enough track for your first layout.

What is the ONE thing your railroad absolutely has to have?
🚉 Station?
🌉 Bridge?
🚇 Tunnel?
🏭 Industry?
🚂 Engine terminal?

Tell us in the comments! 👇

Someone introduced each of us to the things we love.

For model railroaders, maybe it was a parent, grandparent, friend—or that first train running around the Christmas tree.

Kids Run Trains exists to make that introduction for another generation.

We’re proud to have Lionel’s support as we work to keep the hobby growing.

Running around the mainline is fun—but can you build the right train?

Switching a rail yard takes planning, patience, and problem solving.

Move the cars.
Line the switches.
Build your train.
Then hit the mainline!

🚂 Model railroading makes problem solving fun.
