In our next sale...Walther Funk, Reichs Minister for Economic Affairs, admits he established the 'Max Heiliger' accounts with Himmler to hide the stolen assets of Jews and other N**i victims.

WALTHER FUNK (1890-1960) N**i Minister of Economics who confiscated goods of imprisoned Jews to the Reichsbank via Himmler. Sentenced to life imprisonment. FUNK ADMITS A BRIEFING WITH HIMMLER 'AT THE OUTSET' ON THE 'MAX HEILIGER' ACCOUNT Historically important typed D.S. 'Walther Funk' in bold indelible pencil, 1p. 4to., Nuremberg, June 17, 1946, to the 'Chairmen of the International Military Tribunal' concerning 'Proceedings against Walther Funk...Amendment of a deposition'. Funk changes the facts contained in his hearing before the Tribunal, in part: '...During his hearing, the accused, Walter Funk, declared in the course of cross-examination...that he (Funk) first head of an SS account at the Reichsbank from [Reichsbank Vice President Emil] Puhl, the vice-chairman. But the witness Emil Puhl has since affirmed...that it was Funk who at the outset talked to Himmler, the SS Reichsfuhrer, and that he, (Puhl), subsequently heard from Funk of the account to be established. From the evidence given by the witness Emil Puhl, the accused, Walter Funk, has become convinced that actually, on this particular point, the testimony of the witness Emil Puhl is correct, and, as a result of fuller reflection, the accused Funk believed himself also able to recall that originally he (Funk) was spoken to by Himmler...about the setting up of an account for the SS, and that he then told Puhl...about it. The statement which the accused Funk made in the course of cross-examination was the result of a lapse of memory,
and was occasioned by the fact he was completely taken aback by these questions...and was very provoked...Funk informed me [Defense Attorney Fritz Sauter] of his lapse of memory immediately after the hearing of the witness Puhl and asked me to correct his own statement...I am fulfilling herewith the request of the accused Funk...[who] signifies his agreement...by means of his co-signature...' Also signed by Funk's chief defense counsel, DR. FRITZ SAUTER, who had officially presented this document. Mounted to heavy stock, very good. It appears that in the forty days following Puhl's testimony, damning evidence must have come to hand proving Funk's collaboration with Himmler in establishing and maintaining the illicit 'Max Heiliger' accounts. 'Max Heiliger' was a false identity created to establish bank accounts for laundering the proceeds from gold and other proceeds stolen from those persecuted and those killed in the Holocaust. The creation of 'Max Heilger', accounts and other similar illicit accounts were authorized by Funk in a secret arrangement with SS leader Heinrich Himmler,to which he here confesses. Assets seized and stolen ranged from artworks and stock and bonds, to gold fillings pried from the mouths of gassed prisoners. This was an incredible admission on Funk's part, showing him openly collaborating with Himmler and the SS in concealing assets stolen from victims of the N**is...assets still being recovered today. As for Puhl, he had actually been earlier subpoenaed in Funk's defense. He was equally involved in these crimes, entrusted with the physical movement of gold from depots and the camps to Reichsbank repositories. He would receive five years' imprisonment for his crimes. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.

Memorial Day was not created to celebrate barbeques, baseball, the beach, or even veterans. It is for remembering our war dead. Take a minute this weekend to do just that.

Bodies of US paratroopers lie near a command post during the battle of An Ninh, 18 September 1965. The paratroopers, of the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, were hit by heavy fire from guerrillas that began as soon as the first elements of the unit landed.

Battle of Greece 1940: Mussolini Attacks - World War II DOCUMENTARY

"Oxi Day" - A critical day in World War II history.

October 28th will be the 80th anniversary of "Oxi ("No") Day" - Mussolini's invasion of Greece, which lasted from 28 October 1940 to 23 April 1941. Hi**er did not at first believe Mussolini was actually going to invade Greece. But when he received confirmation from his embassy in Rome -Hi**er, according to his interpreter Paul Schmidt, “was beside himself.” As they rushed to a scheduled meeting with Mussolini, Hi**er’s usually obtuse foreign minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop, asserted that “the Italians will never get anywhere against the Greeks in the autumn rain and winter snows. The Führer intends at all costs to hold up this crazy scheme of the Duce’s.”
But as Hi**er’s train was passing through Bologna, word came that the invasion had already begun. Hi**er cursed but kept his anger under control when he stepped off the train in Florence at 10 A.M., October 28, 1940, to be greeted bombastically by Mussolini: “Führer, we are on the march! At dawn this morning our Italian troops victoriously crossed the Albanian-Greek border!”
Seven hours earlier in Athens, an embarrassed Italian ambassador, Emmanuel Grazzi, was knocking at the villa door of Premier Metaxas. Two nights before he had hosted an embassy affair to promote friendship with Greece—while his staff was decoding Mussolini’s ultimatum. Ciano had written it himself, expressing perverse pride in his diary: “Naturally it is a document that allows no way out for Greece. Either she accepts occupation or she will be attacked.”
Metaxas himself, in pajamas and robe, opened the door. Grazzi handed him a demand that Italy be allowed “as a guarantee of Greece’s neutrality…to occupy a number of strategic points.” A ruthless dictator who modeled his secret police after the Gestapo, Metaxas responded with words that rallied all Greeks: “I could not make a decision to sell my house on a few hours’ notice. How do you expect me to sell my country? No!”
A half-hour ahead of schedule, 162,000 troops, about half the number Badoglio said he needed to succeed, launched a three-pronged invasion into Greece from Albania. "The Greeks not only drove the Italians out of Greece but invaded Albania. In their most important victory, the Greeks under Lt. Gen. Giorgios Tsolakoglu captured the important Italian base at Koritsa, 20 miles inside Albania, shattering three Italian divisions and capturing 2,000 prisoners, 135 artillery pieces, and 300 machine guns. Ciano tried to minimize it as “certainly not the loss of Paris,” but Koritsa was enough of a disaster that it forced Mussolini to finally recall those 600,000 troops he had demobilized.
By the time their own offensive stalled on December 5, 1940, in the face of stiffening resistance, the Greeks had knocked the Italians back 50 miles and had penetrated 30 miles into southern and eastern Albania. Amid the international ridicule heaped on the Italians, perhaps the most cutting remark was made by an elderly Greek woman watching some of the 26,000 Italian prisoners trudge past: “I feel sorry for them. They are not warriors. They should carry mandolins instead of rifles.” Perhaps the most shocking statistic of Mussolini’s Greek misadventure was that, while 50,874 Italian soldiers suffered combat wounds, 52,108 endured illness, and 12,368 were incapacitated by frostbite.
Mussolini’s response was astonishingly callous, even for him: “This snow and cold are very good. In this way our good-for-nothing men and this mediocre race will be improved.”
In spite of their military successes, the situation for the Greeks was no less desperate. Greek soldiers subsisted on a near starvation diet of bread and olives; as a result, their uniforms “seemed about two sizes too big for them,” an American correspondent reported. Greek amputations from frostbite reached a horrifying 11,000. Time had run out—for Mussolini and, more tragically, for the Greeks. A week after Mussolini’s return to Rome came the fateful letter from Hi**er: “Now, I would cordially request you, Duce, not to undertake any further operations in Albania in the course of the next few days.” In other words, stay out of the way. This is when the German XIIth Army advanced and Greece was occupied. Regardless, thousands of Greek soldiers , airmen and sailors joined the Allies and continued to fight until the end of the war.
