The Mississippi County Historical Society is proud to be a recipient of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines Member Impact Fund Award through partnership with Focus Bank. This award will invest $300,000 into our community and support the restoration and preservation of this historic home, ensuring it continues to serve as a meaningful place for celebration, history, and heritage.

We are honored to partner with Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines in presenting a Member Impact Fund grant to the Mississippi County Historical Society! This grant will assist with the home/museum restoration project further allowing the historic home to be used as a place for celebration of home and heritage for many years to come.

What a day! Despite the rain, the riders showed up and showed out! We always enjoy hosting one of the many wonderful rest stops for Tour De Corn! We love our Century and 60 Mile Riders!

We are so happy to be a rest stop for Tour De Corn! We will be set up ready with water, Gatorade, watermelon, and other snacks for the riders. The talented Ron Allen will provide entertainment, which is always a great treat! Regardless if it rains or if it’s hot, we always have a great time meeting everyone! Can’t wait to see everyone on Saturday!

The Moore Home stands today as one of the treasured historic landmarks of Mississippi County, serving as the present location of the Mississippi County Historical Society. Long before it became a place dedicated to preserving local history, it was the family home of James Handy Moore (pictured with his parents and siblings). This family helped shape the story of the community during the late nineteenth century.

As the first family to reside in the Moore Home, James Handy Moore and his wife, Mary Hunter Moore, established a legacy of hospitality, culture, and community service that would continue long after their time in the residence. Their home became a symbol of stability and prominence in Mississippi County, representing both the growth of the region and the aspirations of the families who helped build it.

Today, the Moore Home continues to serve the public—as the home of the Mississippi County Historical Society. The preservation of the home honors the memory of the Moore family and ensures that future generations may continue to learn about the people, stories, and heritage that shaped Mississippi County’s history.

For more than 25 years, Tom Graham has faithfully served the Mississippi County Historical Society with dedication, leadership, and a deep passion for preserving the rich history of our community. Through countless hours of service, unwavering support, and a commitment to protecting our local heritage, he has played an important role in ensuring that the stories, traditions, and historical treasures of Mississippi County continue to be shared with future generations.

In recognition and appreciation of more than 25 years of outstanding service, dedication, and commitment to historical preservation, we proudly honor Tom for his enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to the Mississippi County Historical Society. Thank you, Tom, for your service.

The MCHS Board of Directors would like to thank Greg and Sue Luehmann for opening their lovely, historic home for touring, and thank you to Tiffany Brantley for sharing her beautiful artwork during the Dogwood Azalea Festival.

We also want to thank the many volunteers who made our Home Tours a success:
Janie Young, Anna Marie French, Tammy Sutherland, Nicky Thurmond, Gail C**n, Sandra Morrow, Libby Cox, Mary Barnhill, Kayla McKenzie, Dottie McKenzie, Pam Ferrell, LeeAnn Adams, and Jacque Kirby.

Here is the schedule of events at the Mississippi County Historical Society. Tickets to tour the Moore Home are $10, and to tour both the Moore Home and the home of Mr. & Mrs. Greg Luehmann, tickets are $15. We hope to see everyone tomorrow and Saturday!
