Remembering the Casanova Spring Races
On this beautiful Saturday morning in mid-February, the thoughts and memories of some here in the village might turn to the Casanova Point-to-Point Races of times not so very long gone.

I first heard of this event when Betty and I lived in Manassas and started our mornings with Harden and Weaver and Bill Mayhugh on WMAL AM radio. Their show was partly sponsored by Montgomery Shade and Awning whose owner, Casanova resident Bob Montgomery worked along with Mayhugh to host the tailgate competitions that were an exciting part of the day’s festivities.

By the time we moved to Casanova in December of 1990, the races had been moved from Spring Hill Farm to Mt. Sterling Farm over from Casanova on 605. While some long-time residents had stopped attending saying that “it’s just not the same now that it’s not in Casanova,” I always looked forward to this event, the first of the spring racing season. Although there may have been one or two ladies in mink coats and barn boots (there was mud, sometimes a lot), this was not a fancy gathering — just some friends and neighbors and often their dogs getting together outdoors in the middle of February to celebrate the coming spring season.

Not “horse people,” we enjoyed the races nonetheless but mostly looked forward to the postmistress’s chili and maybe a Bloody Mary or two; that, and catching up with neighbors we hadn’t seen in awhile. After the races were held for a few years at Mt. Sterling Farm, the event was moved still further away to Buckland Farm then cancelled altogether five or six years ago. The mud and unpredictable weather of mid-February had won.

A recent visitor to this page questioned whether or not the new Verizon cell tower in Casanova was operational. Here is an update from Rick Gerhardt, Cedar Run Supervisor:

"Verizon is currently the only tenant on the cell tower. Verizon Wireless service has been fully operational on the Casanova tower since December. Verizon Wireless subscribers have realized stronger cell signal and coverage since December, as a result.

OmniPoint has nothing to do with Verizon Wireless. However, OmniPoint will be installing their equipment on the Casanova tower this month and should begin their wireless broadband service shortly thereafter. They were delayed, due to lack of viable fiber and data backhaul options to the Casanova tower. This week, Fauquier County BOS will be approving a grant to OmniPoint that incentivizes them, not only to be on the Casanova tower but, to expand further south in Fauquier.

Furthermore, Calvert Crossland, the owner of the Casanova tower, is in conversations with ATT about leasing space on the Casanova tower. Those conversations are ongoing at this time but, will most likely materialize into better ATT Wireless service in the Casanova area later this year. Remember, the faster Calvert Crossland gets additional service providers on the Casanova tower, the more return on investment they realize. In other words, they make more money with each additional tenant and the faster that happens the better their financial situation."

Thanks for the update Richard Gerhardt!

Thanks for the update Richard Gerhardt!

Another good day for Casanova and the surrounding area. Casanova cell tower is being stacked/erected this morning! Won't be long until Verizon and others, including a wireless broadband provider, commence service.

Weston is a Casanova community treasure as well as a county-wide treasure. Kudos to all involved in its preservation!

When six prominent Warrenton women with shared interests in history and culture met in September 1949 to form the Warrenton Antiquarian Society, they did not know that 10 years later, they would be involved in a major historical preservation effort.

An update from Supervisor Richard Gerhardt on the Verizon application to erect a cell tower in Casanova:

Casanova Cell Tower Update

Earlier this year, Verizon turned the Casanova cell tower matter over to a private development company called Calvert Crossland LLC. The last few months I have been working with Calvert Crossland to find a location that would satisfy cell and alternative broadband provider's needs, while ensuring minimal adverse impact to the scenic and historic integrity of the Village of Casanova. In the process, we were able to find several very good locations but, for a variety of reasons and limitations, some would not work. After an exhaustive search, Calvert Crossland decided on the Pohzehl property as the best location. The site not only satisfies the needs of Calvert Crossland’s tenant/client (Verizon) and the future needs of other cell/broadband providers, it also minimizes the adverse impact on the Casanova area. Therefore, Calvert Crossland has entered into a lease agreement with the Pohzehl’s and is preparing an application for a 140’ tower to be constructed on their property.

Despite the allegations asserted by some in the 2015 campaign, the fact is, I have always supported a cell tower for Casanova, provided it was developed in a thoughtful, methodical and compliant way; and did not destroy the scenic or historic integrity of the Village of Casanova. Given Calvert Crossland’s careful and sympathetic approach to this matter, I will be supporting this application. The Pohzehl property is an appropriate location for the tower, given it protects Casanova’s aesthetic, historic and cultural resources. Furthermore, unlike the previous application, it will comply with the current telecommunications ordinance.

Many thanks to the many Casanova residents who have provided input during this process.

Stacey Walton Yacoub desperately needs a heart transplant to replace the mechanical heart she carries with her today. You may recall from earlier posts here that friends and neighbors in the village have mounted a fundraising campaign to help with the huge medical bills now and to come. The good news is that we are just $4,000 short of meeting our goal of raising $50,000. Please help if you can. You can send donations to Grace Church, P. O. Box 18, Casanova, VA or by donating at www.gracechurchcasanova.org. If you send a check, make it out to Grace Episcopal Church and write "Stacey Walton Fund" on the memo line. Either way, your donation is tax deductible.

A CRASH COURSE ON CASANOVA HISTORY--Be sure to read the nice article about Casanova by Betsy Burke Parker on p. 52 of the Summer Ed. of "In Fauquier" (special section of the "Fauquier Times.")

Mary Roberts Rinehart (pictured here) wrote "The Circular Staircase" in 1907 while enjoying an extended stay at Melrose Castle here in Casanova. The spiral staircase on the cover is actually a feature of the famous castle.

Gary F. Taylor writing in an Amazon.com review says: Written in 1907 and published in 1908, THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE was among Rinehart's most popular works. Wealthy spinster Miss Innes is persuaded by her two wards--niece and nephew Gertrude and Halsey--to take a house in the country for the summer. But no sooner is Miss Innes and her fearful maid Liddy installed at Sunnyside then things begin to go bump in night, and murder is not far behind.

THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE is very much of its era: like many novels of the time it has a Victorian hang-over that shows in both its highly improbable plot and its determination to spell out every possible detail. Not a great stylist, Rinehart was never really able to shed these issues in any of her works--but if you are prepared to suspend disbelief and enter into the spirit of the thing THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE is actually quite a bit of fun. There are sounds in the night, mysterious faces at the window, screaming maids, unexpected visitors, and all the rest. And the book would become extremely influential in an unexpected way.
