New Victory Arts Break โ€” Honoring & Celebrating Juneteenth | The New Victory Theater

"Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, commemorates the day when, in 1865, the final emancipation order was read aloud in Texas, two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Since then, African Americans have built traditions to observe this historic day: to celebrate, people gather to sing, dance and eat together."

We encourage our families and young artists to check out New Victory Theater's week of activities to learn about the history of Juneteenth, learn about different art forms, and reflect on how the Arts can impact society.

Modifications available for a variety of ages!

We turn to the arts to celebrate Juneteenth together as a way to educate, communicate and activate ourselves towards equality, liberation and justice.

Ms. Taylor was the recipient of the "Newcomer of the Year" Pumpie Award in 2019, so she knows a thing or two about diving in and becoming a part of a whole new world. When we asked her advice, she said, "My advice to newcomers and returning auditioners alike is to have fun, have confidence, and don't be afraid to ask questions."

Questions are an important part of learning! Never be ashamed to ask questions!

Ms. Laurel says the best audition advice that she can give is for you to "Take chances and make choices! The director wants to be able to see everything you can do, so step up and show them!"

Ask questions at auditions, read the part you're assigned, and decide who you think the character is. That's how you start to figure out how to walk, talk, and *act* like someone (or some THING) else!
