Happy Juneteenth! The Bartow History Museum stands with the African American community of Bartow County and is dedicated to sharing the history and stories of its black citizens. In honor of Juneteenth, which marks the official end of slavery in Texas in 1865 and therefore the official end of slavery in the United States, we would like to highlight one of the most prominent and well-remembered members of the African American community in Bartow County and a leader within the county as well. Matthew Hill, known to many as Coach Hill, was an educator and mentor within the Cartersville School System for more than 50 years. In the years after his retirement, Hill served as a board member for the Cartersville School system. Hill also volunteered with Dr. Moore’s Hope House Inc. and was a local elder at St. Luke A.M.E. Church until his death in 2009. Today, we celebrate the accomplishments and compassion of Coach Hill in honor of this important holiday. #juneteenth #bartowcounty #history

We received a generous donation of face coverings from donors Jim and Cindy Eaton! They gave 2 masks to every human employee. We managed to find a suitable face covering for the non-human employee, too. When you visit Tellus Science Museum, you'll see all of our staff members wearing face coverings to protect you. While we don't require you to wear one, we do encourage it. You can get your timed tickets online now at www.tellusmuseum.org

Updated COVID-19 testing information

Updated COVID-19 testing information

CARTERSVILLE, GA: Free COVID-19 testing is available to all Georgians who request it, whether they have symptoms or not. In Bartow County, free COVID-19 testing is available at the Clarence Brown Conference Center, 5450 GA-20, Cartersville.

For safety and as a courtesy to others, please call one of the following numbers from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 pm Saturday to schedule a test time:

• 706-802-5329
• 706-802-5885
• 706-802-5886
• 706-802-5888

Walk-ups, however, will not be turned away. You do not have to be a Bartow County resident to be tested.

You may also email anytime [email protected] and ask to be referred. Please give your name and phone number. You will be contacted by public health to schedule your testing.

“We encourage everyone to get tested for COVID-19 infection to determine who is currently ill and contagious,” says Dr. Gary Voccio, health director for the Georgia Department of Public Health Northwest Health District.

“This helps us identify people who might transmit the virus. We can then isolate them to prevent transmission, ensure they’re cared for, identify and interview their close contacts, and quarantine and monitor these individuals as necessary to slow the spread of the virus.”

The Northwest Health District is now conducting free COVID-19 testing at health departments or other sites in Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Paulding, Polk, and Walker counties.

For the locations of all Georgia COVID-19 testing sites, please visit https://dph.georgia.gov/locations/covid-19-testing-site. For contact information for these sites, go to https://dph.georgia.gov/covid-19-testingdirect-patient-lines.

For Small Businesses, It’s a Virus Chain Reaction

What an impact Covid 19 has had on our global economy. It makes us grateful to live in a neighborly economy where we all feel the heartache and come together in resourcefulness. In our hearts we see ourselves standing shoulder to shoulder so that our dreams never touch the ground. We will soar once again!

When Table 20 closed its dining room in Cartersville, Ga., this week, the pain radiated out to a hydroponic farmer, a tablecloth supplier, a liquor distributor, a credit-card processor, a banker and countless others.
