Apollo 13 launched on this day in 1970.

Apollo 13 lifted off on April 11, 1970, bound for the Moon. On board were Commander Jim Lovell, Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert and Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise.

Two days later and already well on their way, an oxygen tank exploded. The objective changed from landing on the moon to getting the crew back safely. (Photo: NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration)

Some of you saw a flash of light across the sky this morning - much like what happened less than a week ago around relatively the same time of morning.

Here's what NASA officials have to say: "Close to 500 eyewitnesses in the southeastern United States have reported seeing a long duration fireball this morning at 6:52 AM Eastern Daylight Time (2019 April 4 10:52 UTC). An analysis of their accounts shows that this meteor is best characterized as an “earth grazer”, which are denoted by a slow entry speed and a long shallow trajectory through Earth’s atmosphere. In this case, the meteor became visible at an altitude of 60 miles above the South Carolina town of Blair and proceeded slightly north of east at a relatively leisurely pace of 31,000 miles per hour. Traversing over 100 miles through the atmosphere in 11 seconds, it finally ablated 45 miles above the North/South Carolina border south of the city of Rockingham."

It was a successful opening for Meteorite Headlines, Tellus' newest exhibit in our Crossroads Gallery. ☄💥

President of the Meteorite Association of Georgia and NASA Solar System Ambassador, Mr. Chris Thompson, interviewed Mr. Graham Ensor, an avid collector of meteorites and a member of the British and Irish Meteorite Society. Ensor generously loaned Tellus a piece of the Barwell Meteorite for display as part of the new exhibit.

Next time you're in, make sure to drop by before or after your shift to check out this fascinating grouping of meteorites and artifacts!

A Large Body of Water on Mars Is Detected, Raising the Potential for Alien Life

In case you missed it: Mars is having a big week! Not only is Mars in opposition, appearing almost as bright in our night sky as Venus, there is now evidence to support possible reservoirs of water under the surface of the red planet.

Don't forget - tomorrow is MARS FEST at Tellus. Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who are donating their time and energy to the event!

The discovery suggests that the liquid conditions beneath the icy southern polar cap may have provided one of the critical building blocks for life on the red planet.
