The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad Station was an important part of Caribou’s growth during the late 19th and much of the 20th century. The station served the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad (B&A or BAR), which brought dependable passenger and freight transportation to Aroostook County.

The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad reached Caribou in 1894, and the first regular train arrived on January 1, 1895. At the time, the railroad was considered one of the most significant developments in Caribou’s history because it connected the community more directly with southern Maine and markets beyond the state.

Back in 1950, Caribou's own Walter Sirois picked an incredible 235 barrels of potatoes in a single day — a feat that earned him a Guinness World Record! 💪🏆🥔

Recently, Walter's two daughters stopped by the Museum and generously donated a newspaper clipping plaque and framed photo honoring his remarkable accomplishment. We're proud to showcase this fun piece of Caribou history and celebrate one of our community's legendary potato pickers!

Do you remember picking potatoes? What's the most barrels you ever picked in a day? Share your stories below! ⬇️

On this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the courage, dedication, and patriotism of those who never returned home. We are especially mindful of the generations of service members from Caribou and Aroostook County whose stories remain an important part of our community’s history.

May we never forget their sacrifice, and may we continue to preserve and share the stories that keep their memory alive.
