Here’s a nice set of photos I shot from my Vegas trip from last summer of the Neon Boneyard, nice set up they have. But I feel it’s more interesting seeing the old sign cans up on poles or hanging on buildings or seeing these old cans hanging and displayed inside a big museum warehouse.

But understandably the cost and logistics of trying to re-hang these enormous historic old casino signs from Vegas’s haydays is almost an impossible task.

Ok now The next step in this process was securing a LTL commercial freight carrier to transport the 2 large shipping crates from San Jose, California to Cincinnati, Ohio about 2500 miles.

This was a very eye-opening experience for me I’ve never shipped anything so large and so far and I had to deal with a trucking world.

After trying to use the phone and internet and trying to explain the size of the crates and the logistics of moving them I finally gave into dragging them all over town I went to five different commercial fright carriers main terminals and they all declined the load until I found one that would work with me

If I had the time I would explain how complicated this whole shipping process was

Now the saga continues here’s another photo series, of building the 2nd shipping crate for the other half of the sign we had to break it in half for shipping. As You could see there’s many steps involved in getting the large signs into the building and moving things around for the fork lift

Been busy as hell with multiple projects, haven’t posted any photos of the fabricating and building of these large shipping crates for the transportation of this vintage Coca-Cola sign. This was a big undertaking due to the size and area needed to stage and fabricate up these 2 custom crates. Just being able to move them around the area and out of your way and be able to pick them up and reset them somewhere was one of the biggest problems.

And once I had the crates built and the signs set into the crates then I had to transport them to many different commercial freight carriers cuz I couldn’t find anyone that wanted to deal with shipping them.

Here’s a recap in photos, starting with a big elevated work table to fabricate all the plywood side panels then we assembled each crate on the floor, then disassemble the crates, left the bottom platform and then proceeded to lift the large sign cans out of my trailer and set the cans down onto the bottom platform and then we reassembled the side panels and installed additional interior support bracing then lowered the large top on top and screwed it altogether.

I have already installed extended pick points bolted to the sign body and extended them up out through the crate so we can put clevis in and lifting strapping and pick the large crates up off the floor, Then once we picked the crates upright we reinstall them in my trailer and took them to a public scale and weighed the crates to find out the shipping weight which came out to about 1000 pounds each

Then the next part of this project was to find a local LTL freight shipper that wanted to deal with shipping these large crates to Cincinnati Ohio from San Jose California. Honestly almost the hardest part of project was trying to find a commercial freight carrier that will take on the project.

Custom shipping crate # 1

Fabrication of crate, removing sign can from trailer, lowering sign can into the crate, closing up the crate, adding casters to the bottom of the crate so it could be moved around the shop area to make room

I just spent 4 days on the Strip in Las Vegas Nevada and I’m currently recovering from a massive dose of temporary NEONIDUS total overload of my eyes and brain viewing so much vintage and new neon signage as far as i could see in all directions

Even though what I would call the newer downtown area with all the high-end casinos and such is world famous I would totally agree its so impressive and overwhelming to experience however at the other end of town all the old vintage casinos and hotels are on Fremont St. which was almost more impressive with all the old school neon colors with lots of figural shaped signs with tons of character and neon animation. This area is what is billed as the Fremont Street Experience they built a large structural steel roof system over I’m guessing five or six city blocks and turned it into a big walking mall with all the vintage hotels and casinos underneath the roof line its one hell of a sight to see its pretty damn impressive.

Here’s a couple short videos to give you a feel and idea what the experience is truly like Enjoy all my neon sign Enthusiast friends

Nevada Neon Project

It is official! We are officially proposing that Neon become Nevada’s official State Element this legislative session, AB 182. We are working with amazing Assemblywoman Sarah Peters and 5th and 6th students at Carson Montessori School to propose this bill. We already have a great deal of Assembly members cosponsoring the bill. We feel that Neon has played a significant role in our cultural heritage and and it should be recognized! We may need you to reach out to your local representative. Tell us what you think.

Neon Sign Park Coming to Casa Grande

Wow super cool at least someones doing it , You would think with all the big money in the SF Bayarea that some of the deep pocketed Corporations which are continuously buying up the South Bay for there future expansion plans would help the local community to rescue, save and display all our vintage outdoor neon signage which are disappearing at an alarming rate . You hear about it all over the USA where way smaller communities than the Southbay are setting up areas to save and display their vintage neon signage for future generation to enjoy the art of advertising

Downtown Casa Grande is going to be a little brighter soon.Work has officially started on the Casa Grande Neon Sign Park, which will feature 14 rehabilitated, mid-20th-century electric signs. The 4-acre area is owned by the Kramer family, who own Casa Grande Valley Newspapers Inc. Lots of Interest in this OSH vintage neon sign that has mysteriously disappeared. I find it very interesting that the sign is getting so much public outcry and media publicity when’s so many other signs in town have also mysteriously disappeared and nobody knows where the hell they went or they say to a private collector I know most of the private neon collectors and nobody seems to know who that secret collectors is

The mystery of the OSH sign continues. We have received conflicting reports that Lowe's removed the sign and reports that Lowe's did not remove the sign.

Many people are looking into the disappearance -- including Lowe's, the City of San Jose, and Google.

The missing sign has also generated a lot of media interest, the latest being two reports on TV last night:

10/16/2018

Well it looks like there’s a possibility of another vintage outdoor neon sign can that might be removed or just disappear in San Jose soon if somebody doesn’t try to save it. Usually when existing business change hands or locations re-rent or leases out to another party the old vintage sign can is the first thing to go. Sometimes the existing sign can gets lucky to be re-purposed and worked over. In the past week I seen a commercial realtor sign posted across the buildings face now.

The old Martin Auto Color location at 3435 Stevens Creek Boulevard San Jose , cross St. Cypress

This sign can was originally manufactured by the “ZEON” Electric sign company with porcelain faces and chaser bulbs at the top I don’t think Martinautocolor was the original owner I have not had time to check on the history but it’s been there at least 50 yrs I know of

This is the old Coyote Stage Stop bar on old Highway 101 in the Coyote area of San Jose, Ca. Currently the bar is shut down probably a good 6 or 7 yrs now, I had stopped by about 10 yrs a go it was a wild ass place, live music I recall strippers at the end or possibly just bare clothed waitresses LOL. But in my photo archives I do have pictures of this old landmark neon sign working it’s a very good looking double sided sign can. I love the details of the neon martini glass . As I was photographing it I noticed across the street a big old water tower and I walked across the Hwy and took some pictures of the old Coyote SP Railroad passenger station. I’ll see If I could dig up in my photo archives some photos of this signs neon glowing in all its former glory. As I recall i think it glows in pink, green and white, I just updated a color photo, I was right
