This morning one of our guides was giving a tour of Granary Burying Ground, when she noticed something unusual. A sinkhole had formed over a early 19th century crypt, naturally she decided to stick her phone down in it to explore. A little window into something normally reserved for the dead. The crypt dates back to 1810, and belongs to a one O Goodwin.

Happy 167th Birthday to Alice Longfellow!!!
09/22/2017

Happy 167th Birthday to Alice Longfellow!!!

On September 22, 1850, Henry and F***y Longfellow welcomed their daughter Alice Mary to the world.

As Henry writes in his journal...

"...[T]his morning at half past six was born a child, a daughter, a sweet little thing, that takes life very pleasantly."

Aside from extensive travel throughout Europe, Alice M. Longfellow lived her entire life at 105 Brattle Street.

In addition to preserving her father's house, Alice served as Massachusetts vice-regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association for 48 years. She established scholarship funds at Hampton and Tuskegee institutes and devoted money and time to schools for the blind. .

In 1878, Alice served on a committee to consider the establishment of classes for women taught by Harvard professors called the Harvard Annex. Established in 1879, this program--later named the Society for the Collegiate Instruction of Women--would eventually become Radcliffe College.

Alice served as an executive member of the Radcliffe Board of Trustees and as treasurer from 1883 to 1891.

Alice M. Longfellow (1850-1928) led a life characterized by a love of travel and a strong interest in education and American history.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALICE!

When Massachusetts Banned Christmas - History in the Headlines

It turns out that the Puritans who ruled Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1600s made Mr. Grinch seem as cheerful as Buddy the Elf.

#bahumbug #historywithawink

Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch had nothing on the 17th-century Puritans, who actually banned the public celebration of Christmas in the Massachusetts Bay Colony for an entire generation.

Our friend, Daniel Berger-Jones, founder of Cambridge Historical Tours, is a master storyteller and raconteur - the history teacher we all deserved but didn't have! Here he is telling the fascinating back story of Harvard Square's Winthrop Park.
We partnered with Harvard Square and Cambridge Historical Tours for a 13 video series entitled "Black Lives Matter to Harvard Square." Taking place from Aug 28 - Sept 9 this project acknowledges and celebrates the work and aspirations of black men and women who were connected to Harvard Square. To watch visit https://www.youtube.com/user/HSBASquare/featured.
Read newly-transcribed letters from Amos Bronson Alcott to Mary Baker Eddy on the Mary Baker Eddy Papers website. Here’s Daniel Berger Jones of Cambridge Historical Tours playing Bronson Alcott at our 2014 Opening Our Doors Program. While preparing for the role, Daniel visited the Library and reviewed some of these letters with our Research team to learn more about Alcott’s correspondence with Eddy. Follow the link for a short bio of Alcott and click on the numbers below it to read individual letters.
