Happy 167th Birthday to Alice Longfellow!!!
09/22/2017

Happy 167th Birthday to Alice Longfellow!!!

On September 22, 1850, Henry and Fanny Longfellow welcomed their daughter Alice Mary to the world.

As Henry writes in his journal...

"...[T]his morning at half past six was born a child, a daughter, a sweet little thing, that takes life very pleasantly."

Aside from extensive travel throughout Europe, Alice M. Longfellow lived her entire life at 105 Brattle Street.

In addition to preserving her father's house, Alice served as Massachusetts vice-regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association for 48 years. She established scholarship funds at Hampton and Tuskegee institutes and devoted money and time to schools for the blind. .

In 1878, Alice served on a committee to consider the establishment of classes for women taught by Harvard professors called the Harvard Annex. Established in 1879, this program--later named the Society for the Collegiate Instruction of Women--would eventually become Radcliffe College.

Alice served as an executive member of the Radcliffe Board of Trustees and as treasurer from 1883 to 1891.

Alice M. Longfellow (1850-1928) led a life characterized by a love of travel and a strong interest in education and American history.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALICE!

When Massachusetts Banned Christmas - History in the Headlines

It turns out that the Puritans who ruled Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1600s made Mr. Grinch seem as cheerful as Buddy the Elf.

#bahumbug #historywithawink

Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch had nothing on the 17th-century Puritans, who actually banned the public celebration of Christmas in the Massachusetts Bay Colony for an entire generation.

Eleven Little-Known Facts of Cambridge History - Historical Commission - City of Cambridge,...

Did you know that Cambridge was known as the Innovation City long before MIT showed up?

According to the Cambridge Historical Commission, "Charles Davenport opened a factory on Main Street in 1842 to produce the first railroad passenger cars with a central aisle. He retired and sold the factory to the Walworth Company, a manufacturer of steam heating apparatus, one of whose machinists invented the Stillson wrench. Walworth had a telegraph connection to its office in Boston, which Alexander Graham Bell used to demonstrate the first long-distance telephone call in 1878. In the 1940s Edwin Land of the Polaroid Corporation invented self-developing film there, and today the complex houses a biotechnology company."
