Niagara County Historian's Office

Niagara County Historian's Office

Once again a reminder about New York State Birth, Marriage, and Death Records:
Starting about 1881, birth and death records in NYS are stored at the municipality/city/village/town, etc. where the event took place.
Starting about 1881, marriage records in NYS are stored as follows:
1881-1908 stored at municipality where the event took place
1908-1935 stored at the county level (Historian's Office)
1935-present stored at the municipality where the couple lived.
Before 1881, NYS did not require "official" birth, death, and marriage records. Such records would have been found in church records. The Historian's Office has many record books from Niagara County churches, but not all and not always sequentially.

New York State land records - and other often-overlooked collections on FamilySearch - are excellent substitutes for the hard-to-find civil birth, marriage, and death records of New York State.

These records can hold a lot of information - you just need patience and a few tips to get the most out of using them.

Cambria's own...
