Supporting and promoting Vermont artists and advancing the creation of new work
Offering a wide spectrum of arts education and engagement opportunities

Burlington City Arts (BCA) has served the cultural and artistic needs of the Greater Burlington area for more than 30 years. Our vision is to fuse a dynamic relationship between the arts and community, to nurture creativity and imagination, and to ignite a passion for learning through the arts. We run a range of arts programs from The BCA Center (formerly the Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts) and throughout the city, and have established The BCA Center (formerly the Firehouse Gallery) as one of the few exhibition spaces in the state dedicated to showcasing contemporary art. Coupled with our commitment to accessibility, The BCA Center and BCA’s Print + Clay Studio enable us to present an integrated series of art experiences that help set us apart from other art centers across the country and cement Burlington’s reputation as one of America’s most livable cities for the arts.

🔊Pump up the volume at Art Amplified when it returns to the BCA Center on Wednesday, September 9 from 5-8 PM!

While wandering through downtown, enjoying a passeggiata stroll with neighbors and friends alike, swing by the BCA Center to experience the gallery in a whole new way with live music, vibrant lights, and cool drinks on patio. Burlington post-punk-pan-electronic-dance wonders Roost.World bring a bumping DJ set at 5 pm.

Next up, put your hands together for the musical indie rock stylings of Paper Castles, lighting up the BCA patio at 6:30 pm. This musical project is the brainchild of Waking Windows co-founder Paddy Reagan and his longtime contributors Wren Kitz, Brennan Mangan, and Emily Tompkins. With their most recent album “I’m Sad as Hell and I’m Not Going to Fake it Anymore”, ranked among the top ten albums of 2025 by Seven Days, this is one buzzworthy act you won’t want to miss.

Meet the artist himself and let him take you on a tour of his solo exhibition when he joins us for an Artist Talk on Thursday, September 3 from 6-7 PM! Join the conversation as Condry leads an interactive discussion exploring the intersection of community and the positive impact of art and sheds light on his creative practice, journey of healing, and family mythology. ⁠

Pop on up to the second floor inside the Lorrain B. Good Room and get lost in the illuminated beauty of Vermont’s waterways as illustrated in Leah Barranco’s “Color and Scale”. Barranco utilizes pattern, opacity, varying brushstrokes, and vivid colors to present the natural world through a vibrant new perspective. ⁠

Make your way across the hall, inside the Roth Gallery where explores identity, folklore, and humor in “Dream / Mộng.” Inspired by her Vietnamese heritage and traditions, Pham creates a diverse body of work ranging from paper collage to wall-mounted sculptures that invite the viewer to imagine new ways of belonging. ⁠

💈The Barber is in! Save the date for September 25 when a special pop-up exhibition, “Barbershop: The Art of Q***r Failure,” comes to the BCA Center.

This interactive installation by artist Ace Lehner reimagines the traditional barbershop as a q***r community space. Lehner, who is not a trained barber but has been cutting hair in community settings for years, will offer haircuts on a first-come, first-served basis. In exchange for a haircut, each participant commits to carrying out an act of q***r world-making that they will complete before it grows out.

“Barbershop” draws on the idea of q***r failure, with Lehner suggesting that failing to adhere to societal standards allows for more creative ways of thinking and moving in the world, making room for new possibilities.

🎥 Lights, camera, action! New to our fall class offerings this year is ‘Introduction to Videography and Sound’ kicking off on September 17-October 29 on Thursdays from 6-8:30 PM.

Tell your story through short film making, music videos, content creation, and documentation with the guidance of BCA’s own Nate Rochefort. Come learn the foundation of videography, sound recording and editing in this skills-building class. Students will also master their creative storytelling by using Adobe Premiere to edit both video and sound recorded outside of class to create their own short film!

🌱Pop into City Hall to take in Caleb Kenna’s “Our Working Lands”, a new exhibition that explores the connection between land, labor, and perspective on view through the end of September!

The portraits of the people who shape this land offer a window into the evolving relationship between humans and the natural world. These images spark a conversation about scale, responsibility, and presence while asking essential questions like How do we understand the people and the processes that shape our landscapes? What role do we play in sustaining these places for generations to come?

Through striking aerial imagery and intimate portraiture, Kenna invites viewers to see Vermont’s working landscapes from a new point of view. From above, Vermont’s farms, quarries, and forests transform into vivid shapes and colors visible from the sky. Yet, every line and texture reflects generations of human work, stewardship, and care.

Be sure to swing by City Hall to take in Caleb Kenna’s “Our Working Lands” only on view through the end of September!

🎨Teaching Artist highlight time! We’re thrilled this month to turn the spotlight on Quinn Johnson ()! Quinn is a ceramicist, art educator, and self-proclaimed “studio rat” who has worn multiple hats during her time at BCA. We had a chance to pick Quinn’s brain about her professional journey at BCA and what makes her work as an educator so meaningful.

BCA: How long have you been teaching at BCA?

QJ: This is my sixth year of being an Instructor at BCA! I began as a Teaching Assistant and Studio Assistant in the Clay Studio and have also worked as a Gallery Educator.

BCA: What medium(s) do you work in?

QJ: I am primarily a ceramicist and work with clay but also dabble in printmaking processes and knitwear design. I enjoy making anything decorative and colorful, no matter the medium!

BCA: What do you enjoy about teaching?

QJ: I enjoy exposing students to new mediums and supporting their curiosity! Getting to throw on the wheel is such a novel and fascinating experience for many, and I love to share their excitement in trying something new and creating with their own hands!

✨️🔊Crank the volume and hit the lights, BCA's Twilight Concert Series returns Saturday August 22 from 6-9 PM!

Pack your favorite lounge chair and meet us at City Hall Park as we soak up the last bits of summer with some incredible live music al fresco. The show kicks off at 6 PM with Vermont-based indie folk darling April Patterson and French American singer-guitarist Cobalt Tolbert lighting up the stage. Together, they bring to life April’s extensive and ever-expanding catalog of tunes.

⚡️Get pumped for the electrifying headliner Night Protocol uniting the sounds of the past, present, and future with their signature synth-wave sound at 7:30 PM! Think pulsing basslines, ripping guitar solos, soaring saxophone leads, and harmonized vocals. Taking a theatrical approach to their live act, you can expect lighting effects, coordinated visuals, and a contagious sense of passion and energy that is bound to get you on your feet!

🍃Unwind, unplug, and lose yourself in our Summer exhibitions on view at the BCA Center through September 12! Make your way to the Roth Gallery on the second floor and escape into ’s imaginative “Dream / Mộng”, where intricate paper-based works draw on folklore, identity, humor, and memory to blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality.

With a diverse new body of work ranging from paper collages to wall-mounted sculptures, Pham draws inspiration from her Vietnamese heritage and cultural traditions. ⁠Combining traditional papermaking with contemporary artmaking, Pham explores the personal and universal nature of cultural knowledge across generations and geographies. ⁠
Delving deeply into her past experiences and personal dreamlife, Pham creates whimsically surreal spaces that invite the viewer to imagine new ways of belonging.
