Problems Around A Profile Picture continues a conversation Zach Frank first explored in his 2020 painting, Problems Around A Story, revisiting the strange ways social media can shape our connections to one another.

Inspired by a fleeting encounter and the lasting impression someone can leave behind, this piece explores the beauty of those little moments that stay with us long after they’ve passed.

Part of Problems 33, this painting is one of 33 works that reflect different experiences, memories, and moments from Zach’s life over the past 13 years.

Introducing Made In Buffalo; a group exhibition celebrating the artists, ideas, and creative energy shaping our corner of the world.

“When I lived in Los Angeles, I visited an exhibition at the Hammer Museum called Made in L.A. What stuck with me wasn’t a shared style or a common subject matter, but the simplicity of its premise. These were artists making work in the same city, each with their own perspective, process, and story. And somehow, that simple connection was enough to bring it all together.
Since returning home to Buffalo, I’ve been continually reminded of just how much artistic talent exists in this city and the surrounding region. I’ve met artists whose work I had never encountered, discovered practices I didn’t know existed here, and seen firsthand how much passion and creativity our community has to offer.” -Zach Frank

That discovery inspired Made In Buffalo.

Featuring nine artists working across different mediums and approaches, this exhibition isn’t about fitting everyone into the same box. It’s about bringing together a collection of individual voices and celebrating what happens when we look at the creative community around us.

Featuring work by Zach Frank, Chuck Tingley, W.C. Maggio, A.J. Fries, Quincy Koczka, Markenzy Cesar, Sarah Sonnenberg, Mike Mararian, and Bethany Krull.

Problems With Saving The St*****rs is a reminder that not every painting needs to take itself so seriously.
Throughout the creation of Problems 33, Zach Frank focused on balancing refined, deliberate mark making with loose, expressive decisions. While much of his work involves an obsessive level of control, there are certain paintings where he allows himself to be playful, lighthearted, and a little youthful.

The idea for this painting came from a funny inside joke between friends during a trip to Amsterdam. What began as a goofy phrase eventually became a painting, completed in late 2025 using bright neons, metallic and colorful acrylics, and glitter-coated spray paint layered across a grid of individual dabs. The result is a work that borrows from the atmosphere of a nightclub while maintaining the precision of Zach’s signature technique.

For Zach, paintings like this serve an important purpose. Balance isn’t just about the marks on the canvas; it’s also about knowing when to let go, have fun, and not take life so seriously.

The four Psychedelic Pattern Problems paintings build upon the foundation of Zach Frank’s 2024 painting Pattern Problems, a work rooted in repetition, consistency, and the quiet beauty found in routine. That earlier painting presented a field of patterned acrylic dabs arranged in a steady grid; a visual metaphor for the rhythms of daily life and the subtle meaning that can exist within the mundane.

With Psychedelic Pattern Problems, the artist expanded both the concept and the visual language. Across the series, the pattern remains and the repetition remains, yet the paintings continually evolve. Each work explores gradual transitions in color, shifting from one tone to the next and creating a sense of movement within an otherwise consistent structure. The series evolved through both technique and color for various reasons, with each painting becoming another step toward something Zach had yet to fully realize.

Thematically, the works address the possibility of altered perception; not necessarily as an escape, but as a shift in how we understand and engage with our surroundings. They also nod to Zach’s ongoing curiosity about the nature of reality, including multiple universes, alternate timelines, life and death, and the broader questions surrounding meaning and consciousness. At their core, these paintings consider the idea that there may be far more to existence than what we immediately perceive, and that even the smallest shift in perspective can reveal an entirely new landscape within the familiar.

The first three Psychedelic Pattern Problems are displayed in Problems 33 as foundational developments that eventually led to the exhibition’s focus piece and poster image, Problems With Bella Pink; The Diaries of a Hopeless Romantic. Together, they offer a rare opportunity to see the evolution of an idea in real time; from repetition and routine, through shifting color and perspective, toward the painting that would ultimately bring many of these explorations together.

“Mistakes” and “Sushi; Unfinished Thoughts” (2013) by Zach Frank

Long before the Problems series had a name, there were these two paintings.
In 2013, Zach Frank was creating abstract expressionist paintings in the garage of his mother’s home in Williamsville, New York. At the time, his work was largely driven by experimentation; trying materials, making mistakes, and following whatever visual discoveries happened to emerge along the way.
He was also eating an unreasonable amount of sushi.

The small dots of caviar and fish eggs found on many of his favorite rolls caught his attention, eventually inspiring him to recreate their texture on canvas. Using a tube of acrylic paint directly from the tip, Zach began placing small amounts of paint onto the surface. What initially seemed like a simple mark-making experiment produced something entirely unexpected. The paint dried in the shape it had left the tube; forming small, raised, almost conical dabs that preserved the physical movement of the artist’s hand.

When Zach returned to the canvas the following day, he realized he had discovered something he had never seen acrylic paint do before.
That accidental discovery became the foundation for an entirely new way of painting.

He began covering canvases in these small acrylic dabs, gradually developing the technique that would become synonymous with his Problems series. What started as an experiment inspired by sushi ultimately became the beginning of a body of work that would continue to evolve for more than thirteen years.
For a period of time, both paintings hung inside Zach’s favorite local sushi restaurant, where they were offered for sale. Neither found a buyer.
Today, Zach considers that a fortunate mistake. Both works have since returned to his collection and remain among the earliest surviving records of the moment his signature technique was discovered.

Before there were hundreds of Problems paintings, there were simply two canvases, a garage, a tube of acrylic paint, and an unfinished thought.
