The 1960s was a time of great innovation in the fashion industry. One of the new styles was the sleek shift dress. This dress hit above the knee and was the shortest hemline to date. Also, the use of bright psychedelic colors was a key feature of 1960s fashion. #MuseumMadness

During WWII, due to the rationing of fabric, dresses were narrow and hit just below the knee. However, post war dresses brought back the full skirt that extended to mid-calf, with a tight waist and rounded shoulders. This style continued to evolve, leading to the designs of the 1950s.

The flapper style of the 1920s is most well known for its dropped waist and shorter skirts. These dresses de-emphasized the bust and hips, creating what some would describe as a boyish figure Hemlines rose and sleeveless dresses became increasingly popular. #MuseumMadness

The fashion of the 1910s featured narrower skirts with higher waistlines and looser silhouettes. The tall collars were lowered and, as in these two evening gown examples, began to be replaced with square necklines. Gowns were made with more sheer and lightweight fabrics. #MuseumMadness

By the 1880s, the use of the large crinolines, or hoops, was obsolete. The elegant look of this decade was created with tight-fitting bodices and decorative gatherings and pleating in the skirts. Smaller cages were sometimes used to support a bustle at the back. #MuseumMadness

The 1860s dress creates an exaggerated hourglass silhouette. The use of a crinoline, or hoop, under the dress made it possible to have a bigger skirt than ever before and cut down on the number of petticoats. In the early 1860s, the shape of the skirt was close to a perfect bell. By the mid-1860s, elliptical hoops were used to create more of a train. #MuseumMadness

03/22/2019

The silhouette of the mid-1830s through the mid-1840s was a delicate hourglass shape, usually with a fan front bodice and a long full skirt. The overall look was achieved by a corset, layering of multiple petticoats, and “plumpers”, cotton pillows to keep the arms full. As you can see in the 1840s the puff moved from the shoulder to the lower arm, then fell out of fashion by 1845.
