The Brush Area Museum & Cultural Center Sack Lunch Program will be held on Oct. 4, beginning at noon, at the East Morgan County Library in Brush. Wayne Carlson, Event Coordinator and Museum Board Member, will present a talk titled “Climbing Mt. Elbert.”
Carlson and his wife Carol climbed Mt. Elbert, the highest of Colorado’s 58 fourteeners, during the summer of 1992. Located near Leadville, Mt. Elbert stands at 14,440 feet above sea level, making it the second-highest peak in the contiguous United States, topped only by California’s Mt. Whitney at 14,505 feet.
Several trails lead to Mt. Elbert’s summit, each requiring a round-trip distance of approximately 10 miles. Named after Samuel Hill Elbert, who served as governor of the Colorado Territory in the early 1870s, the mountain’s first recorded ascent was made by Henry W. Stuckle in 1874. Despite its height, Mt. Elbert is considered a relatively easy climb, rated 1 or 2 out of 5 in difficulty due to the lack of technical requirements.
