About SUKUMO Leather
Founded in Japan in 2012, in collaboration with master indigo dyer Naoyuki Asai in Kyoto, SUKUMO Leather creates a superb extra-soft leather dyed in Japanese natural indigo.
Sukumo is fermented indigo leaves, a form of traditional indigo dye developed over six hundred years in Japan. After flourishing in the 18th century, production of sukumo decreased dramatically with the invention of artificial indigo in the early 20th century. It is now considered to be a dying craft in Japan: only five surviving sukumo producers and a handful of dyers remain. These treasured artisans devote themselves to keeping the fermenting indigo vats going and carrying on the legacy to create shades of true "Japan Blue.”
SUKUMO leather and Asai work together to give this fading tradition a vibrant new shade. The leather hides are dyed in the 100% natural fermenting vat by Asai, then tanned to the velvety texture of soft leather. In addition to three main shades, there are varieties of patterns achieved through shibori and roketsu, Japanese batik techniques traditionally developed for luxury kimono textiles.

Yakusugi” Cedar beads bracelet.
Yakusugi is a unique cedar found only on Yakushima Island in Japan. The Island is famous for having their own ecosystem which allows the cedar trees to grow to be two thousand years old. The trees are considered sacred and cutting them down is prohibited. The beads are made of naturally died Yakusugi Cedar and hand-dyed in Yamato Indigo by Curious Corners.
The red silk cords are called “Kumihimo,” and are braided in Kyoto, Japan.
Each bead has a unique indigo hue and the color fades beautifully over time. Over time the tips of the Kumihimo cords will untangle and become soft fringes.

Katazome Bandanas
Large bandana made of “katazome,” vintage textile from Japan. The textile, found in a small town in Nagano, has traditional chrysanthemum and arabesque patterns printed with “katazome,” stencil dye technique. The vintage cotton fabric is about fifty years old, was once part of a kimono dress, and has a gauze-like softness. We designed the large bandana with selvedge edges left on two sides. Holes are mended with sashiko threads. It’s one-of-a-kind, unique piece to add your daily look.

“Sukumo” is fermented indigo leaves and the key ingredient of the ancient recipe of Japanese indigo vat. There are only five surviving families in Japan who still carry on indigo farming and sukumo making.
Asai, the dye house in Kyoto, sources sukumo from the Sotoyamas, one of five remaining farming families in Tokushima. The sukumo is then turned into fermenting vat with only natural ingredients.
