On behalf of a client, Cooper Technica presented an exceptional 1938 Peugeot 402 Darl'mat Competition Roadster at Pebble Beach in August 2021. After considerable research into the car's history and provenance, it was fully restored by Cooper Technica. An article about the car's first owner, Dorothy Patten, will be published in a forthcoming issue of Rare & Unique Vehicles. Remarkably, the Darl'mat was the only car on the showfield repainted in its original paint type: nitro-cellulose lacquer.

Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance is one of the best Concours in the eastern US. Jay Howard and his crew do a tremendous job of organizing the show, the location is stunning and the quality of cars excellent. I was the Chief Class Judge again this year of pre-war European cars, along with my friend and co-judge, Siegfried Linke. Best-in-Show turned out of be the car that won our class, a 1925 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost first owned by Howard Hughes. This is one of the cars that Rolls Royce manufactured in the United States at their plant in Springfield, MA. The story is that Hughes, who was 20 years old at the time, went to the Rolls Royce New York showroom and bought two matching Silver Ghosts. One was for his new bride and the other was shipped to California as a gift to Gloria Swanson. This was his wife’s car. Recently restored to the original color and in superb condition. My congratulations.

David Cooper and Mark Moskowitz were co-drivers in Mark’s 1953 Allard K3 in this year’s Copperstate 1000 in Arizona. Cooper Technica rebuilt the front suspension, brakes, steering, cooling system, fuel system and convertible top. The Allard performed very well on the 1000 mile event, touring through northern Arizona cornering safely in excess of 80mph. After the Copperstate, we drove the Allard across the mountains and it was shown at the La Jolla Concours. 1400 miles total and not too windblown. Next, the Allard will be at the Pinehurst Concours in North Carolina in early May.

It always amazes me the quality of cars you can see at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Highlights are shown below. I was particularly impressed with the Goldfinger model appearing with the James Bond Aston Martin.

“Just back from Retromobile. A great show this year, expanded into three halls. Highlights for me included a visit to Dr. Gundula Tutt’s paint workshop in Freiburg, Germany; meeting friends; the Society of Automotive Historians annual dinner; the Sports Car Market cocktail party; and the Artcurial auction where my client won the bid for a 1935 Bugatti Atalante Coupe, the Paris Show car.”

Two weeks ago, I judged at a new Concours d'Elegance held at the Monticello Motor Club in NY. MMC is a private race club with a 4.1mile racetrack and beautiful facilities.
My group judged pre-1961 racecars. The winning car in our class was a 1926 Miller Locomobile "Junior 8 Special" Indy Car built with a MIller 91 engine
Another remarkable car was a 1958 Lister Knobbly Chevrolet that had been heavily modified when new by famed race car builder Jim Hall.
A car that I particularly liked but didn't judge was a Renault-Alpine A110 rally car winning it's class.
My congratulations to the staff and my fellow judges for a superb event.

The exclusive "Masterpieces & Style" Concours at Dyck Castle, near Dusseldorf, Germany this past June.
Only 65 cars were invited and our very own David Cooper was requested to be a judge at the event! This event requires serious judging using International Chief Judges Advisory Group (ICJAG) standards.
